Hmm,

Ladies are saying go do your master, Guys are saying grab the contract job then go for master afterward.

This shows men and women think differently. Men are really money chaser. My advice; if you can afford to

spare at least two years doing your masters, I would say go for your master, only if you are sure that will

guarantee you a good and stable paying job in Nigeria when you return, because if you don't go for your

masters now, you might not have the opportunity and interest to go for it in the  future.  If doing

your master is a must, then go for it  but if doing your master is optional or not that necessary, then go for the

contract job, they might retain you and that will be a good work experience with such a prestigious company,

take it as an internship.

Myboo,

All the advice you have received is secondary to a very crucial factor - You need to be very clear about your goal(s) for the future.  This will give you clarity of purpose and focus. External advice without internal clarity will only allow you to drift.

It is really up to you. Some people already told you to go for your masters for more knowledge, they're right. I personally will advise you to go for the job as you can always do your masters at anytime. I hope you do know that u can defer you admission . it is true that you'll have more job opportunities after your masters but trust me, you'll need the experience because with your masters and no work experience, companies will employ someone else without masters but with just a degree and work experience to go with it.

NB: University of Surrey has got a good reputation for masters,

Guy Take the contract job, people wey finish masters still dey find job, it will boost your resume then go for your masters after, you will be a top short,I was in the same condition once, I had a contract job with KPMG before I went for my masters.

My broda i wish you well but i will have to drift away from what every other persons have been saying.
you see those of us already abroad doing our masters are not finding it very funny.
let me give you details
before the global credit crunch there were jobs for graduate students (both studentship and assistantship placements) and from it you could make some savings at least, but now those jobs and even menial jobs are now restricted to only citizens. also the cost of renewal of visa for foreign students have increased with over 600%. this are all strategies to make sure that foreigners return to their home countries.
Back here in Nigeria, there are no jobs at all, those who have jobs are trying to secure it and those who don't have are seriously hoping to get one.
if you ask me i will advice you to defer your admission since you are under the auspices of your parents. get more experience in the work you have there in Nigeria for like a year and hopefully the economy would have stabilized a little before you travel for your masters. once again i wish you well in whatever decision you finally resort to. one love.

How long is the contract for? Will your dad still be willing to pay for your masters afterwards?

Explore to see if that course could be offered online and still be doing your contract job.

That way, you have killed 2 birds with one stone !

@ debo, yeah, his oldman his going to foot the bill but not forever. The man is ready to send the lad abroad to study NOW and not when the guy pleases. Abeg, jobs plenty for naija, . . . .go and come back to either start something lil or get a beta job.

If your dad can still bankroll your program later, I'll advise you
continue working. Keep looking for a better job (while you count
the current one as experience).

When you get a permanent job, then you can apply for a study
leave.

Go and do your Master's it will give you edge. Most Multinationals are now recruiting Nigerians trained abroad who would like to work back home as a way of fulfilling their local content requirement. They do not trust Nigeria University system because of incessant closures and perceived corruption. So I say go get the Master's degree.

Take the work experience. Popsie can always sponsor your Masters another time. Work experience counts more than degrees.

mmmh i dont know if you have made up your mind yet, but 200,000 and a masters abroad.
men dude go abroad you could be making that money in a part time job abroad working only 20 hrs a week and still doing ur masters, 200k is not that much, if it were abt 350-500, then i would advise you to stay and besides with a masters you have better prospects either abroad or in nigeria, the economic crisis is not going to last forever

You answered the question yourself no promotion, no benefits, chances of conversion to staff very slim, intimidation in the office dey too etc

Someone gave you the best answer above, work till Sept then cut out for your masters, that's what I am doing. Wish I had a Dad who'd pay mine.
Don't mind stupid people saying your Pop would pay another time, then he would tell you you're a working man,and can stand alone, and stories like that. Be smart.

I was in your position a few years ago.
My advice: take your Total job, save your money, gain your experience, and plan to use your experience for further studies in the future.
Work experience is a whole lot of education by itself if you remain focused.

@ joxiry: God bless u 4 ur advice.

Im currently studying in the UK and earning over N200,000 (when you convert what i earn to naira) doing a PT job.

@ Poster : since you have a sponsor please go for your Masters. This is an opportunity people like us dont have.
Remember, you dad wont be there forever. Plus when you settle into a job and begin to have other commitments trust me you'll forget the masters.
There would always be jobs available. prepare now so that when the opportunity comes for you, then you can fit in.

I would suggest you take the job

200k is not bad.Do you know how many people who has masters and yet dont have jobs. You got urself an opportunity on a platter of Gold.As you continue to do the contract, more will come cuz u are definately experiences and you get to meet businessmen whom you can always do business with.

Just my thought though

Get the job.
Defer your admission till maybe Jan resumption.
Then go do your Masters
By then you'd have some cash in the pocket.

PS
You don't need our advice.
You have significant others to advice you.
Re: Contract Job With Total (200k) Vs Masters In The Uk: Which Do U Prefer? by annyplenty(m): 8:52am On Apr 05, 2009
My guy, if the master is at the United States, please go, since your father is taking the full responsibility. US economy is heavily industrialised and they like employing graduate students more than BSc. There is high tendency you may get a job before you complete your degree and their policy against foreigners working after completing masters degree is not as strict as in UK.

If the master is at UK or Europe, please stay back and work for two years at least. one year work experience is not always taken to be experience by employers. At the end of your education in UK, you are not allowed to work in UK. so you will definitely come back to nigeria to work. It is then the work experience might distinguish you.
Re: Contract Job With Total (200k) Vs Masters In The Uk: Which Do U Prefer? by saokea(m): 9:06am On Apr 05, 2009
Hello,
As far i am concern, this case is simple and clear. Work experience from an international company is well valued (i.e Total). In respect of how long the Total contract is, you only need to get a minimum of one year experience (I prefer you get 2 yrs experience), then you can now go for your masters degree. Your Masters degree can wait, but the work experience is a golden opportunity that can't be wasted.
When you have worked for 2 yrs and you now go for a related masters degree, i am sure you will get a job anywhere in the world because Total is well known. More so, you can come back and get a better job in the same total or another place.
Going for a masters degree as a first option comes to many people because they were unable to secure a job hence, they need to keep up with demands. So some go to do Masters to increase their chances of getting one while some go for masters because they either want to pursue a new career or they want their pay grade to increase.
I went for a masters degree only after working for three years and realised that in order to exponentially increase my pay grade, i need to go for a masters degree and this has now paid off for me.
So my advice is simple, since your contract job is a reputable one, take the job for 2 years. Resign officially and tell them you need to pursue a masters degree (this may increase your chances of getting a job again with them or a good reference). If you don't have a reputable job or you don't have a job, then go for a masters degree because this will increase your chances of getting a job (provided you have the funding for it).

@ Annyplenty,
Getting a masters degree in U.S, UK, Canada and Australia is very good with Canada having the cheapest tuition fees. It is possible to get a job in the UK after your masters or I rather say that the UK government gives foreign students who have completed a UK degree 2 years working visa to look for jobs. There is also a window available for anyone who wants to change visa category and continue to live in the UK, but he or she needs to fulfill certain requirements. This is similarly practised in Australia and Canada. I don't know of U.S.

For u to have an option of masters means u are definitely old enough to make a decision for yourself. so the thread foxes me.

Next thing you will open a thread asking what course you should read or what colour of shirt you should wear on monday.

And like this forum we know, that will still make front page!

You should definetly complete your masters instead if you get the chance. You can always get a good paying job later, or even a better paying job too with a masters degree from the UK.

Nothing is certain in life - I would still advise that you take the contract job for at least a year, provided your dad is still willing to sponsor you then.

Work experience coupled with a Masters degree is much more valuable than simply another qualification. Don't be too short-term in your thinking. Yes, your dad could decide to stop sponsoring you tomorrow, and he could also do that while you are in the UK too, so don't let that fear stop you from taking the best decision.

With your 1 year of experience, you might even discover that the area you wanted to specialise in wasn't the best and further fine tune your course selection for the Masters program which would help you get maximum value from it.
Re: Contract Job With Total (200k) Vs Masters In The Uk: Which Do U Prefer? by kanayo74(m): 1:26pm On Apr 05, 2009
you have to ask yourself some questions
i) is it a do or die affair for me to go abroad for masters?
ii) can i still do the same masters here.?
iii) will the job allow the opportunity to grow?

my advice for u is to take the job

and get admission for your masters program here in Nigeria so that you will not lose both ways.

all the best
