For Music Producers: FL Studio Or Reason? by zizirecords(m): 5:14pm On Mar 14, 2013 |
This is an age-old argument elsewhere in the world but i want us to discuss it as it applies to Naija. Which DAW is better for making beats? FL studio or Reason? What do y'all think? |

FL Studio has tricks and tips...and very easy to use...it also has so many options. And for those producers who don't know how to play keyboard.. its a good option...Do you also know that FL can be used to mix and master? 1 Like |

Reason has a rather steep learning curve as against FL Studio (evidenced by those general types of complaints against Reason and the huge numbers of "self-taught learners" on the FL bandwagon) but it's all good right? With good hardware, you should enjoy FL without any latency issues, i didn't have the same experience. (it might be the awesome numbers of packs, VSTs etc i had installed on the rig that time sha) Clip Splitting works better on FL as against reason The Piano Roll on FL somehow is easier to get the hang of a whole lot of stuffs but these guys keep improving and outdoing each other with each new version, shey? pick ur poison, make gud music, blow big !!! |

@overboard, i m still tanking u 4 d gr8t help just don knw hw to repay u sir. u sent me gr8t working n functional plugins of which i m vry gr8 full. hmm, fl studio or reason for beatz? i use d two bro. reason is special but has steep learning curve beat production in reason will drain ur eye moisture n time, fl is quick n fast n jst 2 creative. i love it is da best tin since i cnt affort apple laptop for ultrabeat plugin via logic pro9/x. dnt nid it never will even if don jazzy is using to rake millions.jst listen to his beatz frm dr sid siduction album, n other jst pure beat sequencing sometimes arranged with live drum sets n instrumentals i.e take banana by d'prince,fl studio 11 is better like logic pro 9/x.don j doz his beatz in logic pro n track them 2 sequence vocals in pro tool hd, i saw it in his instagram pix.dtunez/magnom beats of ghana-d guy dat brot sarkodie fame-u go kill me/dreybeatz/del b/spellz all use fl studio for beatz 100% sure.they dnt use fl stock sounds but high quality drum sample pack. |
Re: For Music Producers: FL Studio Or Reason? by Nobody: 12:01pm On Mar 08, 2015 |
i simple use reason daw to create a new sound via sampling any sound idea off any rare old records dat capure my ears frm album cds and for pumping my fl studio beatz with reason 5 tape saturation /compressor effects frm scream 4 distortion rack extension. dia are gain/overdrive/ saturation knobs u can manipulate to ur taste. and just use dz treatment to serve as a parallel compression with its other duplicate signal n mix in cubase. philkeys/gospel on d beat uses hardware mk2 mashine drum somes combine with live percussion drums,i.e yemi alade ft phyno-taking over me. dia is no difference everytin is with d help of mixing.even selebobo uses fl 4 beat i.e yemi alade-johnny n sometimes with live instruments n live hand-beating percussion drums,ie mr oreo by iyaya-i cn go on n on-viktor beatz in abj used to work under masterkraft b4, claim his boss uses reason 4/5 daw for beatz. masterkraft earlier youtube comments attest to reason for beat, even jasi by banky w./pangolo-timaya has dat hard jerkin kum kon kumm! |
Re: For Music Producers: FL Studio Or Reason? by overboard(m): 9:17pm On Mar 08, 2015 |
Ha, ha @gsmlogic42 where have you been? Don't mention please. Yeah FL is great, Reason too... I just find myself in different moods at times and just jump on any! FL is pretty easy to manipulate as you said but Reason makes up for complexity with stock sounds being awesome all round. They both have good tweak-ability though. Never though of using Reason effects for stuff done outside of it (not that I need to) though I'd witnessed it before. I'm guessing you use Recyle to beatmap or so before importing into Reason? Aha, parallel compression, badt guy! One day, they'll probably open up their gems as VST based apps. Pro Tools is an awesome DAW but after a while (and I've been through Sonar X2 [X1 was stupid at best] from Cakewalk 8 days, Cubase from 5 VST days to the recent Cubase 5/Nuendo), and even Logic (v5.5) 'til they stopped on Windows, I discovered Presonus StudioOne is the most intuitive and no-bullshit DAW ever. I wouldn't say this if I wasn't pretty sure. The sound sef is true-to-tape asides. From scratch to final, MIDI sequencing, tracking and audio handling, sound engine, stock plugins, automation, compatibility with third party apps... it's like a dream, utopia. Please try it! I only miss the Cubase 5 (new) vocal pitch feature (that is waaay more flexible than Autotune) even with StudioOne's Melodyne integration, which is quite unstable. Hope this is fixed in v3. If you have a high end D/A converter like Apogee (Mac only), RME or Lynx and your processing is good, it will naturally reach where PT HD with it's HD Hardware will take you in record time without the serenre. I've mixed 3 albums on PT with HD hardware and I can tell you, the protocols are really unnecessary. Imagine my shock at the price of their OMF Translator then among other just-to-be-elitist factors. Cracking groups messed them up when they released a PT 8HD version that could work on any soundcard! They had no choice than to institute that as a feature of sort from then on without their famous software with hardware craze. Practicability is another of S1's strengths and I say this with 2 year day-in-day-out experience. FL deserves the award for functionality though. Maybe not really for tracking but in the creative process, its something else. I still love my FL no matter what anyone says! 1 Like |

Hian! So TR dey use S1? Just found out oh. Infact, he's now part of their development team. Is it any wonder? That has been my production icon above Timbo & DeVante Swing and all. Well, it is heavy with its 64 bit processing (introduced by Cakewalk by the way). Even an 8GB RAM 'll do with a 2.5GHz processor unless you pack plugs like wow. My workstation isn't half that for now and you need to see the mad theatricals to mix sometimes. Will soon upgrade though. I use the RME Fireface 400. Want to get the 800 if God bless e soon. To find it is near impossible for now. Order online. No be M Audio, Sapphire and all dem pop cards e be o. Those ones full ground here. Even Avid HD is easier to get than any of the 3 I mentioned. Still dey manage some keyboarding but sometimes track with guitarist. I need discipline to pick up the box men. See you on twitter. You'll know when I follow... |

Wow...since I started this thread, a lot of water has passed under the bridge. I still use Fl studio occasionally but Logic Pro X is my go-to DAW now. I bought an iMac 2014 model and my productions have become more awesome. Not because there is anything special about Logic Pro but because it gets you professional sounding mixes faster than Fl studio and Reason. I have hardware Maschine MK2 connected to Logic Pro and this makes composing drums very intuitive and sweet. Making beats with Fl studio is still the fastest option though but the biggest advantage of Logic Pro is that I can make my beat and voice in the same DAW. |

Well Fl is Ñow boring to me thanks to cubase 5's Groove agent 1 n beat designer ...... Cubase is kinda cool tho it shares the same sequence format with other DAW's but Synapse-Audio Orion 8 is a bit Simple but not that easy to use as per being very fleXible inTerms of Functions like FL.......... My keyboard (a casio 61 learners piano) seems to respond slowly on all 3 softwares...maybe it's because my Ram is less than a 1gb...... Uhm does any1 here have an Idea on how much 3gb Ram 'll cost me? |

ChynoBEATS:am gonna have to disagree on that, cubase is terrible for making beats,av tried it ,its only good for recording mixing and Master ing check online, YouTube vids too, whenever ppl talk about beat production daws they never talk about cubase, its either, logic, reason or fl studio ,even AviCCI uses FL. cubase doesn't even support drumkits/ sample packs ,it only uses plugins for even drmkits . I use cubase 5 tho but only for recording, mixing and mastering. |
