Merit and seniority

@ Poster,

Don't forget that Amokachi was an over-aged player, one of three allowed in Olympics. Since it's more or less a youth team, it makes more sense to appoint an under 23 as Olympic team captain.

Otherwise seniority/experience/performance/consistency and number of caps are considered in senior national teams
Don't forget that somebody who got his first cap at 17 can become captain at 25 while another who was first capped at 28 may never become even become a vice-captain.

How do u measure merit? By goal scoring or goal keeping or what?
What do you mean by senority? Na secondary school u dey?
I think it should be based on time spent in the team. The longest serving (highest caps) player wears the captain' band...
Abi u be learner?

It's up to the coach, and frankly only he'll know.

ceejay80: Why steven keshi allow yobo lift the cup while na our goalee wear the arm band through out the tournament and na him deserve the arm band?

Yobo was very uninspiring as captain, yet you see him hogging the trophy as if na only hin get am.

Keshi wanted to avoid unnecess. wahala by local people saying rubbish.

For me, the rule should read, the man with the highest cap on the pitch on a match day automatically gets the band. This can exclude under age competitions like u-17, u-20 and u-23 cause almost all of them are groomed together and are developed through the ranks. The captain in the under age categories should be picked on merit.

As for the olympics, those 3 wise men (over aged player) should not be given the arm band, they just bring inspiration and needed experience. To the team not fight over than hand band.

Go down memory lane. Keshi was accorded the same privilege when S-Eagles won in 1994. Keshi only played the first match and his struggle for fitness kept him out of the tournament. Eguavoen captained most of the matches but Keshi lifted the cup as the captain of the team.

So why would he deprive Yobo of the same privilege now?

Captains arm band depends on the Coach.
Most times its given to the oldest player with more experience to lead, Motivate and protect the younger players from the ref.
Kanu was not the super eagles captain then but the captain of the Olympic team.
Okocha was an under 23 then but the Coach prefared Kanu to any other player.

it should be by leadership potential
and leadership potential has noting to do with age or maturity
