Attahiru Jega, Bukhari Bello in contention

There appears to be a twist in the appointment of the next chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, ahead of Tuesday’s meeting of the National Council of State, NCS, which is scheduled to consider the nomination.

It was gathered during the week that security agencies had cleared Mr. Bukhari Bello, a lawyer and human rights activist, whose name was forwarded for screening by the presidency.

However, sources hinted yesterday that the name of Dr. Attahiru Jega, a former leader of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), may also be on the cards.

President Goodluck Jonathan, on a visit to France last week had said his nominee for the position would soon be named, although he confessed that he had never met the person physically.

A Presidency source said the president “is keeping his choice very close to his chest” as he did in picking his deputy recently.

The source said Dr. Jonathan wanted to be as neutral as possible in the matter.

It was also gathered that the decision to send Prof. Maurice Iwu on disengagement leave was largely at the instigation of the United States of America which called for the reorganisation of election management in the country.

“During that visit to the US, the Americans made it quite clear to President Jonathan that it would be in his interest and the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians that the electoral reform agenda be properly and expeditiously engaged”, the source said, adding, “It was that understanding which made Jonathan send Iwu on terminal leave.

“At the time of going public with Iwu’s leave, there was no substitute on the table. It is because Jonathan is playing neutral, though one of the governors from the North Central State had attempted to put forward a former Justice of the Supreme Court – but that did not fly with Jonathan.”

At Tuesday’s meeting, the Council of State will also deliberate n the

Insurgents in the House of Representatives, under the banner of Nigeria First Forum (NFF), met in Abuja on Sunday and issued an ultimatum to Speaker Dimeji Bankole to resign within two weeks or face impeachment.

Their grouse is over the N2.3 billion car scandal and other sundry allegations, including high handedness.

Some lawmakers had banded together in the NFF in April to push for his impeachment but ran into trouble over personal issues.

They have, however, put their own wrangling on ice, re-engineered last Thursday after Bankole wrong-footed his adversaries by reshuffling some Standing Committees, sacking one Chairman and three Deputy Chairmen.

Dino Melaye, a member of the NFF, said they resolved that Bankole should resign voluntarily to avoid stoking the tension in the House.

As Bankole has removed Godwin Elumelu as Power Committee Chairman over alleged misconduct, he too should go on the same ground, Dino insisted.

The ultimatum is in tandem with the anger expressed last Thursday by some legislators who felt slighted by the way Bankole threw them under the bus in the Committee matter.

The man has been in the eye of the storm for sometime over what his colleagues see as leadership high-handedness.

A source in the NFF said those at the meeting warned Bankole to stay off his seat by the time the House resumes from holiday or he will be impeached.

Aside the NFF meeting, other dissatisfied lawmakers have been meeting since last Thursday when the Committees were rejig.

They have reportedly begun compiling his alleged misconduct strong enough to see his removal.

Although the NFF had been polarised on the impeachment plot, the majority of the members met on Sunday and decided to woo others back into the fold.

Dino disclosed that he has personally resolved to call Bankole to order on his manner of leadership.

He said he and some of his colleagues have already sent petitions to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) alleging corruption against Bankole.

However, Human Rights Justice and Peace Foundation (HRJPF) President, Chidi Nwosu, has accused the EFCC of shielding Bankole and his Deputy, Bayero Nafada, from prosecution over their alleged roles in the N2.3 billion scam.

Nwosu, who addressed journalists in Abuja on Sunday, threatened to sue the EFCC to court for failing to prosecute them.

But EFCC Spokesman, Femi Babafemi, fired back that the HRJPF should not pre-empt the outcome of its investigation.

The case file is in the EFCC legal Department to determine those indicted in the scandal before charging them to court, Babafemi explained.

Nwosu insisted that, “Following public outcry against the criminal attempt to sweep under the carpet the fraud, the EFCC conducted investigation into the matter and in its recent pronouncement, its Chairman (Farida Waziri), said investigation had been concluded and there was a prima facie case against (Bankole) and (Nafada).

“Regrettably, rather than act on the outcome of its investigation by arraigning (them) for involvement in the fraudulent diversion of the funds of suffering and dying Nigerian masses, the report has been thrown into trash can.

“Since Waziri said Bankole and Nafada have a case to answer, the question that is begging for an answer is, Why is Waziri shielding them from prosecution?"

THE re-organisation of House committees announced last Thursday by the Speaker, Honourable Dimeji Bankole, may have sealed the hope of a possible reconciliation by members , as indications are now pointing towards a fresh gang-up against the Speaker by aggrieved members.

Since Thursday when the Speaker reconstituted the House committees, members have been holding nocturnal meetings to impeach Bankole as those involved have started compiling the list of his alleged sins, which to them, are strong enough to cause his removal from office.
A meeting of anti-Bankole members which took place on Sunday in Abuja, Nigerian Tribune can report, resolved to issue the Speaker with a warning to stay off his seat by the time the House resumes from its two-week break, as they threatened Armageddon should he fail to do so.

Although the Nigerian First Forum (NFF), an opposition group in the House, has been polarised on the issue of the planned impeachment of the Speaker, it was learnt that a majority of members who met on Sunday were members of the group.

Honourable Dino Melaye, speaking on the issues, said members of the House had resolved that Bankole should resign voluntarily as speaker, to avoid heating the tense situation in the House.

He said since he had relieved Honourable Godwin Ndudi Elumelu of the chairmanship position on alleged misconduct, the speaker too ought to resign on the same ground.

Melaye said he had personally resolved to call Bankole to order on his manner of leadership, adding that he and some of his colleagues were of the view that since there were petitions against the speaker before the anti-corruption agencies, it was right for him to resign before being asked to do so.

Honourable Melaye, who referred to himself as the Jagunmolu of Okagi-Amuro of Kogi State, told the Nigerian Tribune that members of the House had declared war against the Speaker, adding that the House would be rendered ungovernable until he voluntarily resigned.

However, the House Chief Whip, Honourable Emeka Ihedioha, dismissed threats to remove the Speaker, saying that the House leadership was more committed to reconciliation of members and the consolidation of the gains of democracy as exemplified by the successful passage of bills on constitution amendment and electoral law in Nigeria.

He said the decision to re-organise the House committee was not taken by the Speaker alone, but was a collective one by the leadership, adding that the re-organi-sation would have long been effected but for some consideration.

Ihedioha appealed to members to maintain calm, as, according to him, the time between now and the  general election was too short for the House to start attending to diversionary issues.

The chief whip also appealed to the media to avoid any damaging reports on democracy and the National Assembly in general, noting that such reports would not do Nigeria any good.
He said reports on activities of the House should be verified and subjected to national interest before publication, in order to prevent those he referred to as enemies of democracy from using the media unduly.

Meanwhile, the face-off may have taken another dimension, as a text message threatening the lives of Bankole and his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Ebomhiana Musa, was allegedly received, at the weekend, from an unknown person.

In a statement credited to the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr Idowu Bakare, the message was said to have been sent to the mobile phone of Mr Musa on Saturday morning.

The message, which read: "Mr P.A., you and your boss are nothing but dead bodies, but you will be (sic) firstly face the consequences shortly, prepare your will now," according to the statement, was sent through the mobile phone number, 07039828940, from an anonymous sender.

The statement added that the aide to the speaker made efforts to reach the owner of the number "through repeated calls to the number, but the efforts proved abortive, as the owner refused to pick it."

He said the telephone was later switched off, apparently to ward off repeated calls.

It noted that the incident had been reported to the security aides of the speaker and other relevant security agencies in Abuja, adding that the speaker had been advised to take preventive measures to safeguard lives.

The reception was organised in honour of Martins-Kuye by the founder a political organisation, Omo Ilu Foundation, Mr. Buruji Kashamu.

The former president had in an interview with Voice of America some nights ago, faulted former National Chairman of the party, Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, who said Jonathan was barred from contesting the presidential poll because of the zoning arrangement of the party.

The only reason why fools believe in this is because Jesus was born a mysterious birth.The question i would my trinity people are;
1. Can't God send an angel to earth in the form of christ, must God come directly to earth?
2.Why will a God on earth alway refer to his God in heaven even till d time of death?
3. If we hv multiple Gods then who is superior?remember God shares is glory with no one.

Yes according to the bible, there are passages that talk about yahweh coming down to kill people and stain his cloth with their blood while boasting and screming that he did it alone in the book of Jeremiah I think, I wonder why a god that is said to be all powerful is boasting  and beating his chest about killing people alone, I will look it up and post it up for you because I have posted the verse here on nairaland before, there are other passages that talk about Yahweh moving around with lamps in the night lookinf for people to kill, people that have offended him or broken his laws, I wonder why a god that knows everything needs a lamp to look for people.
