REQUIREMENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CATFISH HATCHERY

A good fish hatchery operator seeks to produce high quality, fast growing fish seed using brood stock of known origins. This write up seeks to present ideas for consideration in locating, designing and
managing a small-scale fish hatchery.

Need for Specializations in Fry and Fingerling Production

Everyone cannot do everything and most fish farmers may well be best at producing table sized fish for the market and leaving fish hatchery management up to those who are best prepared and equipped with the means for intensive fry production to meet demand. Presently there is a one stage fingerling production of catfish in Nigeria with
hatcheries carrying out induced spawning and rearing of fry and fingerings at the same farm facility. This calls
for much specialization at one facility and may have some advantages, but a more efficient approach may
involve a two-stage production as practiced in Asia.

There may be an opportunity to create a niche market for nursery rearing of fry to fingerlings as has occurred in other countries.Hatcheries could produce large quantities of fry, which are easily transported, over long distances, in very large numbers at 2-4 days of age, once the fry lose their yolk sac and start feeding. Several tens of thousands can be transported in a plastic bag with moralities at perhaps up to 20%, but this amount often dies in initial hatchery nursery production; the objective is massive transport around the country as this will make more fingerlings widely available and open up significant fish production outside of the South West, where most fish are presently produced.

Fry could thus be produced at hatcheries then transported to nurseries for rearing for another 5-6 weeks to a stocking size of 2-3 inches in length for producers. This would create three types of fish farms: 1) hatcheries, 2) fry rearing nurseries, and 3) fish production farms for table size fish. This diversification of production could allow more specialization and focus on doing one thing well and improve overall production, all the while creating more employment. Such“specialists producers” have contributed to making Asia the producer of 75% of all aquaculture produced
fish in the world.

Requirements for a Successful Fish Hatchery

1. Water - High quality, unpolluted water supply preferably with gravity flow water.Fish hatcheries require a year-round, unpolluted water supply. A backup water supply may be necessary in some areas as with a borehole. Water should be of good quality with a neutral pH of about 7 and water CaCO3 alkalinity and hardness of more than 25 ppm. Harder waters of 100 ppm or more are advantageous as they support
higher productivity. More alkaline and harder waters are well buffered and with their mineral and nutrient content, provide the best conditions for high fecundity, high hatching rates and survival and growth of fry and fingerlings. The best hatcheries use a filter system for water filtration before entering the fish hatchery tanks.
Some hatcheries use UV lights as sterilizers to kill bacteria circulating in their water supply. Water should be tested regularly for quality. A reliable water test kit should be on hand at any fish hatchery. Water chemistry parameters are presented for hatchery water supplies. If it is necessary to use well water, it should be stored i for a few days to drive off carbon dioxide, increase the oxygen and generally condition the water. Pumped waters should be filtered.

Water Chemistry Values for Fish Hatcheries

• Oxygen………….. ……..5 ppm-saturation
• pH………………………. 6.5-8.0
• Carbon dioxide………….0-15 ppm
• Total CaCO3 Alkalinity… 50-400 ppm
• Total CaCO3 Hardness…...50-400 ppm
• Nitrate……………………. 0-3.0 ppm
• Magnesium……………… trace for buffer
• Hydrogen Sulfide……….. 0 ppm
• Iron-Total………………… 0-0.5 ppm
• Phosphorous……………… 0.01-3.0 ppm
• Temperature………………28-32oC

2. Market - Being near a market with high demand for fish fingerlings.

3. Brood Fish - Have selected brood fish of known origins for fast growth, high dress out weight and quality control.

4. Water Chemistry Monitoring - Have the means to monitor and maintain good water chemistry at the hatchery.

5. Management - Be a good hatchery manager with qualified, trained staff and a Management Plan.

6. “Know your fish” - A good hatchery operator constantly observes his fish from hatching to fry to fingerlings to table size fish.
What is normal behavior for each stage of growth? How active are fish at different times during the day? What is their normal feeding
response? What is the hatching rate of eggs, what is the survival rate of fry?

7. Feeding of fish –- A good hatchery operator knows the feed requirements of each stage of fish production, from zooplankton, to
supplemental feeds.

8. Handling / Transporting Fish - Be experienced in conditioning and transporting fish with high survival rates.

9. Record Keeping - Maintain good record keeping for proper planning.

10. Business Plan - Have a business plan to assist in qualifying for bank loans.

11. Marketing Strategy – A good fish hatchery has a marketing strategy, which minimizes expenditures and maximizes income. A
good strategy includes a variety of clients or buyers of fish, not a limited few who may form a cartel for maintaining low prices to the hatchery operator. Remain upto date with market price is the key.

Boss soft777 thank you so much for your help so far I really appreciate you sir. I want to use this opportunity to let the house know that the feed formula that soft777 gave me is working magic. My fingerlings of 2months and 2weeks added an average weight of 100grams -150grams in two weeks. Some above 150grams. The fishes now have an average weight of 300grams - 350grams, 400grams-500grams and some above 600grams. They will be 3 months on 3rd of January. I will keep the house posted. Thanks to all the gurus in the house.

Congrats bro.Where did you buy your fingerlings pls

This is wonderful sir and these are success stories we love to see here , prof robonski thanks for this wonderful tread , if in 2 months you are getting a range of 350 to 600 gram that is an average of 475 kg ,then from my calculation your fcr is about 0.8 ,this is a superb result in fish farming .
If you keep it up sir in 3 months you will get an average 1kg , my advice is , dont sell ye,t contact me for super weight finisher feed formula, when they are 3 month and by 4 months you should be heading towards 1.8 to 2kg. Then you can sell .
Keep up the good work sir ,more grace to your elbow
thank you for your encouragement sir. It's all because of your wealth of wisdom sir.

Can you please post the formula of the feed, it seems we're on the same page, mine will be 3month by Jan 2 and they are presently weighing similar kg like yours and i intend going to the mill tomorrow Saturday or next week depend on when i finally made up my mind.

I have posted my intended formula earlier and seeks contribution from experience farmers of which Soft777 considered is on the high side.

Please i count on your input.

@Soft777, please what crude protein content would you recommend for fish of 2month - 4month.

Also, what should be the minimum ANIMAL PROTEIN [fish meal]for local feed require for fish of this age?

This will really help me arrive at a reasonable price
Fishmeal (local) 50kg, blood meal 20kg, soya meal15kg, gnc 10kg, cassava flour 15kg with the minerals content. Soft777 formula. I did some little adjustment. Fishmeal 40kg, and peanut 20kg, maize 15kg in replacement of gnc and cassava flour with 5kg of wheat offal. Thank you sir. Note abx1 50kg Fishmeal formula was used for 3weeks after the completion of foreign feed (coppens ). The mill use an extruder so the blood meal does not cause much water pollution and it's floating feeds.

Note all feed formula can not be the same ,adjustment are needed because ,before formulating a feed formula, i put into consideration 1, the type of pond used either tapolin concrete and earthen pond . 2 The type of system flow through , recycle and stagnant system ,3 what percentage protein has been fed to the fish before ,4,The general health of fish to determine if to formulate a medicated or a normal feed.5 The relative cost of ingredients in your locality.
Just as i said earlier , no one feed formula can be used for everybody there are many factors we need to analyse before we formulate feed that will suit your own fish and system , for best fcr .Do not be surprise if a formula that works with mr A,does not work for mr B ,please take this information into consideration for effective result. GOD BLESS

Plastic ponds sir
1 Get a black tapaulin or any dull dark color to cover your pond , .
The dark color will help absorb external heat and retain it in your pond to help increase the water temperature .
2,Increase your water flow rate because as your water flows down and splash on the existing pond, heat energy is generated you my not know but after each flow through check your water with a thermometer and u will discover some two and above rise in your pond water
3,feed only one time during the afternoon between 2 and 4 pm . And all will be fine good luck

Thanks for ur prompt response sah.
1. If I cover d ponds with d tapaulin won't they suffocate or something?
2. I don't think I really understand ur 2nd point.
3. Isn't there an option to ur suggestions?
Thank u as u respond sah

they will not surfocate you can cover 3/4 of the pond , covering is good for your pond protects it against predators...
My second answer was when yo are doing flow through that is changing your water ,you should increase the force or velocity at which new water is entering your pond the splash and waves it causes in your pond will make your pond water warmer .
I didnt want to write the third option before cause it will cause u money but anyway buy an aquarium heater and heat ur water 1 hour or more depending on your pond water volume every morning please not boiling ring only aquarium heater.
And feed only 1 time a day in the afternoon
