Tiv Secession Latest: Victor Malu Dares Fgn, Speaks On Danjuma by Germannig: 5:16pm On Apr 07, 2008
Fiery ex-Chief of Army Staff, General Victor Malu is again up in arms against the Federal Government. This time he is fighting on behalf of his kinsman, Dr Alexander Gaadi, who was arrested penultimate week by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) after he won a whopping N40billion judgement against the Federal Government. The judgement was compensation for the 2001 military massacre in Zaki Biam, a Tiv community in Benue State.

But beyond the Gaadi travails, over which the former ECOMOG commander has vowed that his people would vehemently resist, Malu who spoke in Lagos, took two of his former bosses – Olusegun Obasanjo and T.Y. Danjuma - to the cleaners over their perceived misdeeds while in office.

General, I assume you read the comments credited to Gen Danjuma over the counter coup of July 1966, et cetera, et cetera. What’s your reaction to that?

First of all, Danjuma is the last person who should be talking about things like that and apportioning blame, even if it included him. If Danjuma wants to say something, he should be apologising for his particular role in what happened in 1966.

I was still in the secondary school - final year in the secondary school - but shortly after that I went to the HSC, from where I went into the Army. However, I think I had a good idea of what had happened. I remember one statement he made and said the people of his own age had failed the country.

And if people of his age didn’t have the opportunity that Danjuma had, the influence he had with the government and Obasanjo, and his total lack of contribution to what happened that made Obasanjo to become a demi-god that was committing the act, some of which they even committed jointly, he is the last person who should be talking about things like that. I don’t believe him one bit.

All he should be doing is apologising to Nigerians, his role in that and the subsequent thing that they did.

People say his criticism of Obasanjo now might not be unconnected with the seizure of his Oil block by the ex-president. How true is that?

Of course, there’s no doubt about that. That one I believe. I believe that 100 per cent. In one of my interviews I had made reference to a meeting we had with General Danjuma. Out of total patriotism, we followed him from the Church to his house in Asokoro - the three of us Service Chiefs - the Army, Navy and Air Force. That was 14th January, 2001. We went to advise General Danjuma - and I spoke first. If I explain my relationship with General Danjuma you will appreciate what I am telling you.

General Danjuma and I are from the same locality even though I’m Tiv, he’s Jukun. We have a lot in common, so we look at him as one of us. He is an ex-boy of my school - Government College, Katsina Ala (it used to be the Provincial Secondary School).

Right now he is the Permanent President of the Old Boys Association, and we have every respect for him for that. General Danjuma was my GOC when I was still a Lieutenant in 1970. He became my Chief of Army Staff by the time I was a Major in the Army. The same man became my Minister of Defence when Obasanjo eventually appointed me the Chief of Army Staff. So he is the last person I could ever disrespect by any means. But things were going wrong and we thought the only person we could talk to was General Danjuma, knowing him for what he used to be.

So I had no fear of going to talk to him intimately, to advice that he needed to do something that would make Obasanjo know that things were wrong. As a matter of fact, I told him that if what was happening continued by the time he would round off his tenure of office, everybody would forget the name General Danjuma because we didn’t expect that he would associate with such a government.

We advised him to resign, as Minister and we would follow him. General Danjuma embraced each and every one of us and said that what we were telling him had been agitating his mind but he didn’t know who to discuss with; that if was good that his own service Chiefs had made the proposal to him.

The 15th of January – Monday - was to be his last day in office as Minister of Defence. We went for the parade at the Eagle Square; finished from there, went to the Brigade of Guards Mess for refreshments. Obasanjo came and joined us, stayed for about 20 minutes and left us with our minister.

The whole of the World Press was sitting waiting; we sat with General Danjuma for the next 40 minutes until he told us he was going. We escorted him back to his house. That was the last we heard of General Danjuma’s decision to leave the government of Olusegun Obasanjo.

The importance of the thread is to show how empty the leaders are
Playing the blame game. Blaming everybody apart from himself.
It was Danjuma, now Malu others will follow. Exonerating themselves.

Nobody is claiming responsibilities for the decadence in the system
See no-evil, hear no-evil , part- of-no-evil leaders!

In a decent army, Malu and his likes should retire as Sergeant Majors or at best Lieutenants
He should just shut up!
