Prime suspect in the Madalla, Niger State bomb blast Kabiru Umar, popularly known as Kabiru Sokoto, has been remanded in prison custody by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Umar was yesterday arraigned by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) on an amended two-count charge over his alleged involvement in terrorist activities in the country.
He was accused of facilitating the intention by an illegal organization, the Boko Haram sect, which he was a member between 2007 and 2012, to bomb the police headquarters and some government organizations in Sokoto State.
He was further accused of failing to disclose information to a law enforcement officer as soon as practicable about the bombing at the Saint Theresa Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State on December 25, 2011. The blasts left scores of people dead and injured with property destroyed.
The two-count charge are punishable under section 15(2) and 7(1) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act 2004 and Terrorism and Prevention Act 2011 respectively.
Umar pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him. The defence counsels Hassan Lukman, S. E. M. Okoh and Ibrahim Saidu requested for his bail, but was refused by the presiding Judge A.F. A. Ademola on the grounds that it was not by formal application.
The judge, however, granted an application by the defence counsels to remand him to Kuje prison to enable easier access to him. The lawyers had complained of restrictions at the State Security Service (SSS) cell where he was being held.
