Lagos State Governor, Babatunde has finished building the first suspension bridge in
Nigeria. The 1.358km bridge, which will link Ikoyi (Alexander Street) to Lekki (Admiralty Way), cost about N29 billion to build and a toll will be collected to recoup the investment. The

Nice one! Though i think your thread title could do with a little tweaking, as Fashola didn't build anything (he'd have to be Superman to perform such a feat)......he signed the contract papers for Julius Berger to build it using Lagos tax payers money.

Can any civil engineers in the house tell us the benefits of using the suspension model as against building a plain old bridge (like third mainland and others); and i thought suspension bridges are meant to have two of those suspension towers undecided......don't know the technical implications, but it just looks more balanced and pleasing to the eye.

^^^You need to quit getting so emotional all the time.....not good for your BP mate. Abi you no see where due credit was given in my previous post?

And where do you come off thinking other Governors and GEJ aren't signing contract papers as well?; you're acting so defensive/possessive with that statement.

What contract are they signing? You mind showing us the contracts and the project?

Hate is a terrible thing. This is not only the only suspension bridge in Nigeria, it's.the first suspension bridge in West Africa, a beautiful addition to your landscape, a pride and joy for you as a Nigerian.

Look beyond your usual village sentiments sometimes and be happy for yourself as a Nigerian.

You are talking to an animal that live in a an environment that doesn't really understand the concept of kpako bridge. But because they try to imitate dubia and all the artificial cities that tries to run before they crawl, they think a suspension bridges is what a city that lacks basic pipe borne water needs.A city that can't supply the majority of her inhabitants with safe drinkable water and chatted sewage network. The basics.

See me see trouble oh! shocked Trouble dey sleep, iyanga go wake am!

Wasn't it your kindred spirit Shymex that talked of GEJ and other Governors not signing any 'contract papers' for projects? If you buy his line of reasoning then you're more dense than i initially thought.

The moment an Igbo asks an innocent question on anything concerning Lagos, you get your knickers in a twist and start screaming accusations of 'hate'!

Suspension bridges are cheaper and safer than other bridges and they have been in existence since the 15th century... I don't get where the "trying to copy Dubai" thing is coming from...

Advantages over other bridge types

- A suspension bridge can be made out of simple materials such as wood and common wire rope.
- Longer main spans are achievable than with any other type of bridge
- Less material may be required than other bridge types, even at spans they can achieve, leading to a reduced construction cost.
- Except for installation of the initial temporary cables, little or no access from below is required during construction, for example allowing a waterway to remain open while the bridge is built above
- May be better to withstand earthquake movements than heavier and more rigid bridges.

Things should be seen fundamentally.City building starts from the basics to the sumptuous. The romans or the egyptians used the aquaeducts to supply their cities with safe useable and drinkable water. But in 21st century nigeria, half of city dwellers still can't get useable and drinkable water without enormous fuss and life threatening diseases. And in the same city, the marvel and height of bridge building technology and knowhow is being showcased, just because they can simply pay oyinbos enormously to come and mount it,while the people still lack the basics.

Many of us don't even know what a suspension bridge means structurally. This is a nice achievement and I salute BRF...Why can't the federal government award more contracts to develop our roads and use toll collection to recoup the cost...It would go a long way in national development as well reducing the rate of road accidents.

Are you one of the 'oyinbos' that are mounting it?,a lot of gov't building contracts these days in Nigeria are going to indigenious companies, the building materials are usually made in Nigeria, guess where the laborers come from? Nigeria, so how are oyinbos the one mounting it? please explain further on this topic.
About water in cities, what is the fisherman in chief doing, last time i checked wasn't there a ministry of water or something, why are they not doing anything??, where is all the money going ?, Lagos has commisioned about 15 mini water works or something like that in the last 2-3 years, and you are here talking about "half the population don't have access to basics", how do you know that, how do you just arrive at such a conclusion, please show us your research process..when almost every community in Lagos has a waterworks in it.
