If this was so, then we could interpret as symbolic but this event was eye-witness accounts of activities and wonders performed by Jesus. They are 100-percent literal. Okay, fair enough. I was speaking as an ELECT. For me and my kind(fellow elects), the true fasting is to abandon the Laws of Moses. For everyone else, they can continue to follow fasting as defined by the traditions of the law.
