The only way to stop this habit is for federal Govt to provide steady light and charge people according to what they use like recharge card. You will see how everybody will be switching of their light.

Dewze: Just wondering why Nigerians ve the habit of leaving light bulbs on during the day even in places that they are not needed. Take a walk along a typical lagos street on an afternoon when they is power and you see almost all outside light bulbs on, both in shops and residential building. Obviously these lights are not being used at these times. Nigerians complain abt low current when(if) there is power yet the wisdom tht switching off these bulbs when and where not needed wld help (a great deal) in improving the supplies in our houses seems to be absent.

No person (leader) is encouraged to help the people when the are not first willing to help themselves.
@op it isn't called low current, its low voltage

Estimated billing by PHCN is the main cause.

A pre-paid meter will bring about a change of attitude

@OP: This is a no-brainer. It's simply rebellion of some sorts. I'm billed 9k in a month for electricity supply that is "one day on-one day off", meaning I only get 15 days in a month and you think I'm going to care about conserving power? Besides, I put the security lights on at night and they take power while I'm asleep. How will I remember to switch off the lights when it wasn't on when I left home.

Let NEPA/PHCN give me my pre-paid meter and see if I will still leave those lights on.

Some people here are just giving lame excuses for their ignorance but i think the best way is for people to get this Pre-paid meters where you are charged according to how much power you are using, @ least since i got mine i have had no cause to complain.

Because many of them don't pay light bill anyway, they just bribe the Electricity guys few Naira and that settles everything.
I think after they privatize Electricity like they did with Cellphones, we may see some changes.

naanxie: Well,as someone said, its home training! My popsy trained us like that,b4 goin to bed everything goes down (xcpt d freezer)! Even wen we wake,we ensure its still turned off! We all are used to it! I stay around isolo and my light is very ok sha and d bills, not so bad! On an average,we get like 2k! This month shockingly,we got 651naira! Still we av light like 12-15hours daily!
#651 from #500 fixed charge=#151. #151/#12.3=12units per month. Something is happening here.

With your freezer on permanently, there was no way the whole of your household would use just 12units or 12kilowatthour in a month. May be you guys are doing bye-pass.

Oga,i don't understand α word of this!! As i said on an average,we like 2k. Sometimes we get 3k! Therez no by-passing here o! I was even shocked wen i saw d bill dat i looked at it 2wce and asked d guy who delivered d bill!

denitro: Scenerio 1:
I switch off my light bulbs during the day when leaving the house
Light bill at the end of the month: N12,000

Scenerio 2:
I leave my light bulbs on when leaving the house

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out why people leave their light bulbs on
when they are not around.
its not cool to leave your lights on while you are out. Dnt just switch off the bulbs, u cud turn off everything even right from the gear switch. You're not using every kobo paid on electricity bill by leaving it on, you're only taking undue risk.

When PHCN prefer to charge you flat rate than to come to ur house and read the meter if installed, /refuse to install meter even after you have paid.
Re: Why Do Nigerians Leave Their Light Bulbs On In Day Time. by OutofBox: 6:17pm On May 16, 2013
Although failure in electricity billing system by PHCN provide a justification for leaving bulbs “on” when not needed, we should not forget the moral and environmental side of it. Anytime a light bulb is left “on”, electricity supply to another customer is undermined. This is sad if the electricity supply is critical to the denied customer livelihood or survival. Also every bulb switched “off” when not need reduced environmental and noise pollution. Switching “off “ 14 "60W bulbs" when not needed equals switching “off” a 1000KVA "I pass my neighbor" generator.
Re: Why Do Nigerians Leave Their Light Bulbs On In Day Time. by gerald09(m): 6:24pm On May 16, 2013
Well since electricity is on active in average 10hr out of the 24hr day span the bulbs have to do its job day or nyt. Who know when it will be on again when PHCN strike.

It is ignorant that causes that. I compare it to a household living their water tap on so long as the water authority is supplying water. You know Nigerians are very unique people
