Experience is the best teacher. A wise man learns from the mistakes of others. Much as women are necessary to sustain life on earth a wise man should be wary when dealing with them.

Older women do the same. They advise the younger ladies to be wary of men. It is to learn from others mistakes I guess.

The elders weren't and can't be referring to your wife or rather the mistresses.
