I am a fresh graduate. I mobilized for NYSC 2013 Batch B and my call up number is out and correct, however some days ago, I received a letter of admission with scholarship for a PhD degree starting September 1st, 2013 from a university abroad because I graduated with a first class.

Please I want to serve my country; and I don't want to loose this scholarship offer as it may not come again. Kindly advice me on what to do.

Can I go to camp and write to defer the remaining months by August in order for me to travel abroad by August ending?

mascot87: You can definitely use one stone to kill two birds.How if you my ask me.Go and start your NYSC,after you have been posted to your place of primary assignment,go to either you LI or ZI and explain yourself.Tell them this is an opportunity of a life time and might never come your way again.If you are lucky,someone may be arranged to stand on your behalf to perform your monthly clearance,also you arrange with your employer at your PPA and sill the whole shit.After the end of your Service,the ZI or LI you arrange with will definitely know how to collect your certificate for you to be collected from him or her by your close friend or family.You then have to be calling the officials often so that there wouldnt be any mistake.

OP, don't even think about it. Its the Phd all the way; you can come back to serve as the Phd programme shouldn't take long, assuming you're still young.

The masters degree is a pre-requisite for those who graduated with 2.1 and want to further to the Phd level.

Same applies to those who graduated with 2.2 and maybe 3rd class; but those need to obtain a post graduate diploma first, then masters, then Phd.

Yeah. Start the service first. I have 3 close friends that only went to orientation camp last year July. They all proceeded to UK in September for their masters degree and they will all get their Nysc discharge certificate by proxy come June 6. All you have to do after camp is to talk things out with your LGi and your PPA. Na Naija we dey bro.

Ndababa: A first class graduate from Nigerian University going straight to PhD. He-he! Man, get up if you're dreaming. Even though, that's the norm but I can tell you categorically that no university would do that now, not when no Nigerian Univ is ranked among the best 500 in the world!

When you said Masters is for those with 2.1 n 2.2 that shows you still need check your prospectus. Msc prepares you for a field to specialises on/in during your phD. Its no more an 'added spice' to 2.1 or so graduate as u labelled it.

Unless if you're going for your phD in a 4th world country.

By December this year, I would be applying for Msc at Univ of Strathclyde, according to the prospectus I received, only 1st class n 2.1 are even eligible to apply for that course. mind you I'm also a 1.1 graduate!

Pls verify your scholarship o, dnt be scammed. Neverthless, go for your NYSC, you can always leave it. Cheerio!

The fact that your background is bad does not mean your back should be on the ground!

The institution am going to rank among the top 200 in the world and the institution I graduated from is not among the top 10 in Nigeria, its a matter of self development.

For your information, I already have M.Sc offer to study @ University of Strathcylade and Cardiff University.

@Ndababa I think you are very wrong about it bro. If you earn a 1st class that a automatic qualification for PhD. Maybe you should ask your local university to confirm this. The young man knows exactly what he's talking about.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and opinions on this topic.

I have completed my PhD and had my graduation ceremony in November 2017. During my study period, I published 5 articles in top-tier journals and attended 6 conferences in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam and USA.

My doctoral thesis was granted outstanding thesis award and one of my conference papers received the best student paper award. I also received other awards and scholarships for outstanding academic performance.

I am currently working as a postdoctoral researcher but I will consider doing my NYSC soon , who knows I may have a role to play in strengthening Nigeria's Science, Technology, Engineering, Education and Development (STEED) capacities in the future.
