Abia First Lady Wages War On Child Traffickers, Baby Factory...

In her renewed efforts to stamp out baby factory as well as child trafficker in the state, wife of Abia State Governor Lady Mercy Odorchi Orji recently reiterated her resolve to flush out baby factory in the state and curb other illegal business that has made Abia state a safe haven for their ungodly trade.

Lady Orji made this observation while flagging off this year's maternal and health week in Umuahia, the state capital. She bemoaned the rate of death witnessed among infant due to malnutrition.

She said, "26 percents of neo-natal deaths occurs as a result of malnutrition, nursing mothers as well as care-givers must avail themselves of the new health centre provided by the state government to improve their health status," Odorchi advised.

She further demonstrated the determination of the state government to curtail child trafficking in the state by adopting baby Nwakego Okeke whose father was rendered incapacitated due to an injury he sustained in a fatal accident recently.

"The state government would partner with development partners to address the menace of child trafficking that has become a money spinning venture for unscrupulous elements in the society," she said.

In an interview with Daily Trust, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health Mr.Eme Onyekaba pointed out that neo-natal deaths has become a hydra-headed issue in the state adding that parents must intensify effort to immunize their wards from zero age to 59 months as a way of curtailing communicable diseases.

Similarly, the state coordinator of development partners in Abia, Dr Hillary Ozo said "though lots of progress have been recorded towards maternal and child survival in Abia state, the state remains polio free but that with low immunization rate this could change" he stated.
