Happy Democracy Day by Stegomiah: 1:17am On May 29, 2013
"Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people". -Abraham Lincoln

On May 29, 1999, exactly 14 years ago today, democracy was restored in the country with the swearing in of Chief Segun Obasanjo, as president. The advent of democracy after the nation’s chequered experience under the military was received with much joy and great expectations by the people.

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty. John F. Kennedy

Wishing all Nigerians (at home and abroad) and Nairalanders a Happy Democracy Day!!!

A fraudulent democracy, which we are still trying reform, but democracy nonethless after decades of military misrule. I also think that the Nigerian Democracy Day should be celebrated on June 12. Jonathan lacked the sense to do that and instead went to rename a certain university MAU.

Nigerians do not understand what democracy is.

Many believe that holding rigged elections every 4 years amounts to democracy.

IF CELEBRATION IS AN OUTCOME OF SUCCESS OR ACHIEVEMENT, NIGERIA NEEDS NOT TO CELEBRATE THIS DAY AS DEMOCRACY DAY, BECAUSE THERE'S NOtHING DEMOCRATIC ABOUT NIGERIA DEMOCRACY. THE JUDICIARY HAS TURNED TO MEET MARKET, THE LEGISLATIVE ARM HAS BECOME A DEN FOR GREEDY BUSSINESSMEN WHERE SELF SERVING LAWS ARE ENACTED. THE EXECUTIVE ARM IS SO CLUELESS AND RECKLESS. ANY CELEBRATION IS A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND RESOURCES. THE SO CALLED POLITICIANS ESPECIALLY OGA AT THE TOP SHOULD APOLOGISE TO NIGERIANS FOR HIS WOEFUL PERFORMANCE AND CARELESS LOSS OF INNOCENT LIVES OF POOR AND HOPELESS NIGERIANS. THEY SHOULD RENEW THEIR OATH OF OFFICE AND ENTER INTO A NEW CONTRACT BY SIGNING A BOND TO BE GOOD MORAL.

Re: Happy Democracy Day by Nobody: 9:38am On May 29, 2013
Democracy died a long time ago in Nigeria maybe since when june 12 was truncated. All we have now are the hooligans of those days in the Army re-incarnate and taken over Nigeria's plutocracy.

What sort of democracy grants amnesty to identified political thievies and send ordinary citizens to long jail term for stealing phones, goats and pennies ?

What sort of democracy can't guarantee safety of lives of citizens ?

What sort of democracy oppress oppositions ?

What sort of democracy victimise federating states simply because they disagree with the president ?

What sort of democracy can't give people basic necessities of life ?

What sort of democracy spend much on the government while the poor people languish in abject poverty ?

Fela had said it,Africans should do and practice what work best for them instead of practicisng a borrowed concept that hasn't added any value to the quality of their lives.Let's stop this demonstration of craze !

THIS IS ANOTHER DEMOCRACY DAY, WHICH WAY FOREWARD NIGERIA?
Re: Happy Democracy Day by yokiti: 9:42am On May 29, 2013
If Democracy was conceptualized to mean: Government OF the PEOPLE, FOR the PEOPLE and BY the PEOPLE.
Looking at the situation in the Giant of Africa, one tends to query himself if the person that conceived that great definition of the form of government wasnt high of Lizard feaces,

Welcome to my country; Nigeria where those in government and their conniving allies are the only people that matters and feeds fat on the resources of the well endowed Tropical giant of the Savannah while over 98 percent of the population are masses that can be thread upon at will.
Countries are to be run like a system where several components works together to maintain a whole.
This leads me ask; what are the roles of our spiritual and traditional leaders in making their followers and subjects have a better living?

May 29th marks another revolution of our self imposed democracy day in Nigeria. Ask the "rulers" what progress is our democracy making? they will tell you the benefits of democracy can be felt on our street.... Now I understand what they meant! No wonder, we have many beggars on our streets! No wonder the states of our physical infrastructure is going from bad to worse! Welcome to Nigeria, where Thief are given chieftancy title, where rogues takes the front seat in the church and mosques and they donates handsomely to the propagation of embezzlement, the land where the highest bidder wins the judge and law enforcement over no matter the degree of your offence. The land where the voice of the masses is silenced becuase no energy to even organised your thought (borrowing from Yoruba adage that Ebi ki wo inu ki oro miran wo meaning an hungry person cannot think of any other thing other than satisfying his/her hungry anatomy.)

If there is a word that is not far from the buccal cavity of our "RULERS" its; we are the leaders of tomorrow. When will the tomorrow come? Oh I see! Tomorrow never dies; as it was said in 1960 so we are hearing in 2013 that the masses are the central of government policies but the reverse is the case.

Happy holiday (work free day) to my fellow country mates lets leave democracy to the lootcrats in government.

May God bless Nigeria with GOOD leaders and ACTIVE FOLLOWERS.
When will the revolution that will change the foundation of this country come?
