I'm hesitant to comment on this topic as I've seen all these vile attacks on people who are not 100% in support of this.

Basically, the biggest issue for me is that every few months, there is someone getting attention on social media and the press for an ailment or another. This will inevitably create "donor fatigue" where people will be tired of being asked to donate to every cause of the minute and vilified if they decide not to.

So I do think it's somewhat unfair of OJB to request N15 million arbitrarily where it's a FACT that thousands of people will be happy to receive N3 or 2 million to go to local hospitals for renal transplants (by far the most common transplant there is) including aftercare (or even N6 million for India trips). So is OJB worth 5 lives (or another life that can be saved in India)? And I also see potential avenue for abuse where donations are not transparent, there is no breakdown of amount received vs costs anticipated. Transparency is important to set precedent so it can weed out the dishonest that WILL eventually try to abuse the generosity of Nigerians.

In any case, I'm glad that kidney diseases have been brought to the forefront and alternatives explored. And it highlights the sorry state of our medical facilities and the complete lack of any welfare state. Nigeria cannot keep crowdsourcing healthcare, it is not sustainable, sooner or later fatigue will set in. If we had any kind of government, they should ask themselves how Nigeria will move forward if we cannot even take care of our citizens.

I have nothing against people who are willing to donate. I have and will, time and again donated cash/time to causes/people I strongly believe in. I don't have unlimited cash and I know I cannot help everyone that comes to my attention and needs help. But before I part with my cash, I like to know that it's directly going to support the cause/person it was intended to.

I think he got it wrong here by responding to whatever interview as regards to what the lady stated.
In as much as there are other costs involved, Coming here also to state that he needed part of the money for maintenance for about a year is just messed up the whole idea for it's need.
Anyway, I wish him well to recover.

My take on this is that, as big a star OJB is, he should have medical insurance, even being under the so called COSSON they should have a way of taking care of their own and not running the entertainment industry down with asking the public for money.
Just thinking though

You are right he have to respond that Juliet of a girl is something else, if this kind of a thing happens to his blood brother i believe she will not be posting trash, if we Nigerians are not complaining, i wonder why she that is far away Ghana will be the one spiting trash, busy body olo fofo.

My prayer for OJB is that the operation will be successful so he can live a normal life once again. no amount of money can buy life.

Madam, google the cost of Renal transplant in India. The highest cost is N5-N7 million. OJB is asking for 16 million. 10 million more of the surgery fees and you are here supporting him? Rather than support OJB, I rather go to LUTH and donate to those in need of just 5 million to save their lives. The sooner, you realise that this is exaggeration of sympathy, the wiser for you.

By now, OJB should have more than enough from celebs and anonymous donors so you tell me why hasn't the donations being called off? I am sympathetic. I love many of OJB's songs. But I definitely am not stupid!!!

With all due respect but nairalanders please correct me if I m wrong.
Remember Steve 'the sleek' Kadiri? When he had kidney problems I cloud remember that his pleas were made from the confines of the hospital. You cloud see from his contenance that his condition was critical.

Now, back to OJB, I haven't seen pictures nor videoa of him being in the hospital and we are expected to believe his condition is critical?n I read somewhere that he has about 8 weeks to live. If tghats the case then he should be in the hospital receiving treatment instead of being in the media defending and commenting on evry rumour.

In all of thisn I must admit that his PR team haven't done a good job.

This is my opinion. You don't have to buy it, it is exclusive to me and me only...

Analyzing the 16million naira expense:
Weekly workup: including routine blood and chemistry analysis at the rate of 1,800 for a full blood count and 3,500 for chemistry. I dont knw hw often he undergoes dialysis but a work-up is done pre and post-dialysis in an ideal world. If he does dis 3 times per week then it comes down to 31,800 weekly excluding cost of 3 sessions of dialysis weekly. He could easily spend between 40 and 60 thousand on dialysis weekly incl consultation fees at the hospital. Sub-total for 2months (while looking for potential donor): 480,000

Next step is finding a suitable donor: This is done through 2 lab tests. First is a blood group (donor and recipient must have same blood type) and then must also be HLA compatibility. HLA testing in nigeria is about 360,000 (approx) for a donor and recipient. Every additional donor will cost another 160,000-180,000 until you find a suitable donor. It is not uncommon to have to screen as many as 5 or 10 people if one is unlucky to eventually get a potential donor that is not just HLA compatible but also free from HIV, Hepatitis B,C, Diabetes etc. HLA typing for 6 potential donors would cost about 1m and that's if you are lucky. Running HLA Tests also include ancillary expenses...lets say 1.5mil for 6 people incl and infective screening. If he has received several blood transfusions which is likely due to renal failure he would also need to do an expensive HLA antibody screen and would make finding a donor much harder to find. Cost of test not included but it used to be arnd 110,000. Sub-total: 1.7m

Travel cost to India: I never go india before so I dont know but lets say 160,000 per person just for airfare per person. He would need cost of airfare for himself, the potential donor, hotel expenses for that donor at least before d day of surgery plus cost of hiring a doctor to escort him to india which generally is not less than 500,000naira. So lets allocate another 1.2mil.

Surgery itself: No idea jor...Maybe 5mil including cost of surgery and stay at hospital, tests and drugs.

Post surgery: He may want to stay back after surgery for 1month which is advisable so he can continue follow up by his indian doctors. Extra hotel and miscellaneous expenses 600,000.

Back to nigeria: So he is back. If all is well he would need a minimum of monthly chemistry @3,500, measurement of tacrolimus levels monthly (this is d drug that is given to suppress your immune system from attacking the foreign kidney). This test is best done continously after surgery to prevent complications minus cost of drugs and consultations at local hospital. This would probably cost somewhere around 60-70,000 monthly. sub-total (1st yr post surgery): 2.8mil

Total: Approx. 12mil (Verdict: 16million is not far fetched)...

Choi, make God give man good health sha...

Now the questions are; We understand the Lagos state Government is aware of the move and they are in full support...Are they also vague of how much a kidney transplant will cost in total? which I very much doubt. Did they also conspire with OJB to cook up figures like that to scam the public?
Moreover, His daughter had a heart problem for several months, did he beg the public for donations to handle that? Also, do you know he would have thought about the shame and embarrassment this appeal for aid would bring before making a decision on the move?
Lastly, Has any of your close relatives, friends or loved ones ever had a kidney transplant?? If yes, Kindly tell us how much it cost them in total...ENOUGH SAID!

He's going to need to be on medication for kidney rejection for over 1year after the transplant. I think that's what he's trying to say.

lorretta u: Well at least she was right.
But I think this guy should have ignored that statement.as a sick person he should reserve his energy for the recovery process.
But why should he ask for money to maintain himself for a whole year?he should be more concerned with getting well first seeing as he said he has only two weeks to live(make that one week now)then he can look forward for more.most of the people he's asking for help aren't even sure of their next six months

NIGERIANS WILL RATHER DIE CELEBRITY THAN LIVE NORMAL. A SICK PERSON ASKING FOR DONATION STILL HAS TIME FOR CELEBRITY GOSSIP, GRANTING INTERVIEW, RESPONDING TO QUESTIONS.

THATS BY THE WAY, I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT AFTER SUCH OPERATIONS, PEOPLE STAY A WHILE IN HOSPITAL, ALSO TRAVEL FROM TIME TO TIME FOR CHECKUP, DRUGS ETC.

I BELIEVE THIS WAS THE COST HE MEANT BUT WAS SHALLOW IN HIS EXPLANATION.

I have been pondering lately on this trending "OJB kidney transplant issue" not as if though I wish for negative things upon my life, but what if I was the one in his shoes, how would I have cried out to the general populace to raise such amount to save my life... Knowing fully well am not a celebrity.
I can imagine thousands of poor ones who are also afflicted with same illness and has no hope of getting such amount for the operation, I can imagine how they would lay back on their sick bed and wait for their death hopelessly..
Now I give kudos to whosoever came up with the slogan "health is weath"
