The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has
discharged and acquitted Major Hamza Al-
Mustapha for the murder of Kudirat
Abiola, wife of late political icon,
Chief M.K.O Abiola.
The judgment essentially overrules the
judgement of the Lagos High Court which
had sentenced Al-Mustapha to death by
hanging.
The presiding judge accused the lower
court of being “stroked to secure a
conviction by all means.”
Al-Mustapha, a former Chief Security
Officer to the late Head of State,
General Sanni Abacha, was sentenced to
death on January 30, this year for
conspiracy and the murder of Kudirat
Abiola, who was shot in Lagos on June 4,
1996.
Mustapha has been standing trial since
1999 for allegedly masterminding the
assassination of Late Alhaja Kudirat
Abiola,
