Mathematics In Nigeria- The Way Forward by Xtargold(f): 3:55pm On Jul 12, 2013
This question has been on my mind for a very long time. Are there really job opportunities for graduates of Mathematics......i mean a place u can really apply what u read in school?I'm tired of hearing things like 'a mathematician can work any where'......anywhere as what?

Well, the best you can do is to adapt your intuitive skills and logical reasoning to other fields like accounting, finance, or actuarial science where you'll mostly deal with financial models, probability and statistics. But if you are thinking about applying abstract algebra, or real analysis. I'm sorry..... Not in Naija. Cheers.

As am writing dis post now am currently study mathematics in the university, personally i dnt believe their is no job (no matter the course you are studying), i would have given u fews reason to the best of my knowledge but dat will take much of my time, i dnt like teaching if u tink dats where u end ur career as a mathematician, ones am tru wit my studies am going fully into d computer world. Mathematics is really universal my friend, tink positive thier are 1001 (one thousand and one) place you as a mathematicien can work. Dat my little contribution. PEACE BE ONTO MEN

A mathematics graduate can work in an oil production company as a reservior geophysicist/engineer ( shell,Schlumberger, ExxonMobil and some foreign jobs employs mathematicians)...also get skills like programming or any ICT skills (though it depends on your interest)..... cheesy a graduate of mathematics don't lack teaching job so far you are good

What should be your concern for now is getting a good grade.

2nd plan is to go for M.Sc in other fields like geophysics, fluid dynamics (etc) and see yourself rule.....am a testimony of this

Wow Great and Nice Thread.
Good to see that most commenting on this thread are Mathematicians as i am.
@OP it takes a lot of research to knw where we work. But for the records, Oil companies employ Mathematicians,
Venturing into I.C.T is also there, Diversifying in Ur Masters is also good.
So guy, You Just have to put it at the back of your Mind that graduating with a good grade is a starting point and thus the Sky is just a Starting Point for YA.
Goodluck 2 All as we expect more comments

First question would be what class of degree did you graduate with. undecided

@OP the world is at your feet, with your mathematics there are oppurtunities abound everywhere, but I think the best advice in the form of question is graduate with a good grade and you don hit jackpot grin grin grin

Statistics, Data Analysis, Business Analyst, ICT (since the basis of Computing is mathematics) accounting firms and banks industry are some of the roles/places you fit into and moreover since you are (I am supposing here) a new graduate most companies will readily take anyone with good grades as an entry level employee what now matters is what you really want to do as a person.

With Mathematics and good grades most companies will always take a second look at your cv as long as your state your good grades there.

Graduated last year. Studied mathematics and honestly, I'm really confused about what to do next. Graduated wit a 2.1 but I don't see any advantage. If it was 1st class, ehen. Currently serving and thinking of what to do is giving me headache. Afta serving, should I go 4 masters, or should I do a professional course like ICAN or ACCA, or learn IT stuff...many ish plaguing me.

Well it's up to you. ICAN/IT/MASTERS aren't bad ideas.
But if u're looking for Jobs many companies do employ Mathematicians e.g SHELL,PWC,KPMG etc. Its left for you to search for this opportunities, Mathematics is really valued and if you study it you're well respected that is IF YOU CAN PROVE YOUR WORTH.
All the best

I think what Mathematics does is fine-tuning the brain. There is no area of career that you find yourself without your brain being already trained to rule. Pls have that in mind.

Well just think deeply about it, follow your heart. I was at this stage too during service and was also writing the ICAN exams but I just didn't have passion for all those book-keeping stuff (sorry to all accountants, but that's how I see it) someone introduced me to the actuarial exams, I did a little research and that just clicked it for me. It's tough but very rewarding as you can work ANYWHERE in the world once you are a qualified actuary.

It's puzzling how you were able to graduate with Mathematics, with a 2:1, without developing any interest in anything undecided

I have interest. Problem is that I have interest in too many things.

So go back to school and study some more.
Maybe after you do a masters and/or PhD, you'd have figured out your specific interests.
You can also take on ICAN, MBA, or anything else that you have the capacity to handle. And no, I am not being sarcastic.

maths is d mother to all sciences , as a mathematician u can fit in all sectors .

the only disadvantage is dat u become master of none.
employers wud prefer accounting, engineering ,geologist n even some social sciences graduates to a mathematician becos their specialism solely on that field .

I'm not a mathematician but a statistician,i think the best thing to do is to deviate to learning statistical tools and applications, cos it seems to be the way forward and ability to use some of this applications will broaden a candidates chance of employment cos statisticians can work anywhere.
Some computer experience on comptia N+ or A+ too will be cool.
Don't let your course of study restrict you boundary, just keep learning new things cos u'll never know when it will come handy.

Why is he kidding With the level of computation analysis involved in today's extraction of oil, yes is the answer. Most IOC will actually hire a mathematician in certain areas of well technology before a geologist or a Petroleum engineer. Don't ask me why. Is just the reality today in the oil business.
Re: Mathematics In Nigeria- The Way Forward by Nobody: 11:19pm On Jul 31, 2013
OP, a degree in any science related field isn't as monotonous as one may find it in other fields that isn't science related...(No hard feelings)... It all depends on how far you are willing to go... As a mathematician, there are much better prospects for you in the IT world and also financial establishments... There is no where in the world that the application of mathematics isn't appreciated... Push your limits, find an interest, master in it...

I'm not going to ask you why. You said in certain areas of well technology (well site analysis) which I strongly agree with you. I just didn't agree on a previous post saying with a degree in mathematics, one can work as a reservoir engr/geophysicist... Haba!
