|Nigerian Soldiers Killed In Crash(100 Soldiers Died) by denuda: 3:07pm On May 22, 2008|
At least 43 Nigerian soldiers have been killed in a road accident in the north of the country, according to the Nigerian military.
The soldiers were in a convoy of vehicles travelling to their base when one of the vehicles collided with an oncoming petrol tanker in Yobe state.
An army spokesman said others were injured and receiving treatment.
One report said the soldiers had just returned from a peacekeeping mission in the Sudanese region of Darfur.
Sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission Emmanuel Okeke said poor visibility was responsible for the crash.
"The two vehicles crashed and there was a fire, the people inside were burned. Both drivers also died," he said.
The petrol tanker was empty, he said.
Fatal accidents are common on Nigeria's roads.
Thousands of people die every year as a result of poor roads, dangerous driving, and vehicles that are unsafe to drive.
Fires after accidents are also common because bus drivers frequently carry jerry cans of fuel if they think petrol may be more expensive by the roadside.

May their souls RIP. However, this is not newsworthy.Actually, it is. As many lives were lost as would be lost in a major plane crash.
How many other Nigerians die in road mishaps and are unreported?Up to 10,000. http://www.roadsafetynigeria.com/information.html
