A relatively unknown Nigerian writer is on the long list for year 2008  Frank O' Connor  Short Story Prize which is the highest paying global prize for that literature genre.

The writer Tubal R. Cain's work titled "Dandaula and Other African tales"  is the first African work to be so listed since the institution of the prize. It is listed along with reputable  works of 14 British Authors, 8 American Authors, 5 Irish Authors, 4 Australian Authors, one new Zealand and one Singaporean Authors. A total of 39 authors are on the list. Majority are well known and famous writers.

I checked out the site; not bad at all. About the Nigerian author, I believe if he's work (Tubal is a he, right?) is good enough, then there's no reason he should the prize. More power to his elbow, I say.
