Press release- The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information & Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, has faulted the erroneous impression created by the spokesman of Action Congress of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, Mr. Joe Igbokwe in an interview he granted Sunday Punch of 4 August 2013, where he claimed that Akwa Ibom State government had written to

Lagos State government demanding them to evacuate their destitute indigenes from Akwa Ibom.

Mr Umanah in a release in Uyo, the State capital, explained that the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, in the course of carrying out their welfare programme, came across two “vagrant psychotics”, whom they took to hospital for medical treatment.

He further stated that the patients, having considerably recovered from their ailment, gave their names as Babatunde Obamaiviya and Tunde Jimmy and claimed to be indigenes of Lagos State, and had no relations in Akwa Ibom State.

The Information Commissioner added that based on doctor’s advice, the duo was placed on trial leave and had no family members in the State, it became expedient for the Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, to write her Lagos State counterpart on the patients’ challenge.

Mr. Umanah disclosed that the Ministry, through letter No. MWASW/AD/239/Vol.111/102, dated 23rd July 2013, said, “This is to inform the Honourable Commissioner that in our bid to rid the State Capital of lunatics, in line with the transformation policy of the present Administration, the under listed persons who are known vagrant psychotics were evacuated, during the clean up exercise to remove lunatics off the streets of Akwa Ibom State.”

The letter, Umanah further disclosed, added, “Since then, the patients were hospitalized and duly treated with good responses. Following their processes of recovering of sanity, the doctor has placed them on trial leave. However, in view of the fact that they are indigenes of Lagos State and have no relations in Uyo, we have decided to refer them to you for further medical management/treatment and necessary action, please.”

He remarked that Akwa Ibom State government at no time requested the evacuation of non-indigenes, nor did it deport non-indigenes, and wondered why Mr. Igbokwe could engage in such blatant misrepresentation.

He assured all that the government of Akwa Ibom State will continue to accommodate and protect all law-abiding residents in the State irrespective of their creed or State of origin.

Some Nigerians are so good at heating up the polity of the nation for no just coure. Amidst the controversies that had trailed Fashola's alleged deportation of Ibos, ds Joe igbokwe should have done proper investigation before spilling and laying false accusation. To think that the AKSG has a Ref letter with date to back up their innocence make Joe Igbokwe a nitwit. Like some kids on NL rushing to post "First to Comment" seems Political parties re rushing into the "First to accuse" thing.

These people were taken in and treated and cared for by the Lagos State Government free of charge and thereafter needed to be reintegrated with their families.

What's the difference between the above and what Akwa Ibom did against your illogical conclusion..?

You are actually indirectly praising Lagos state because Lagos state after receiving the notification from Akwa Ibom, they rose up and absorbed their responsibilities with no question asked .. unlike Anamabra where they did nothing for months after notification.. all they did was offer some silly run around about how many, give us list and eventually neglected their own people and obligations for months.

The only act of tyranny here was perpetrated by the government of Anambra state and their lying governor who denied receiving any notification from Lagos state hence letting his people hang dry.

Btw, talking about tyranny. Was it tyranny when Obi himself deported folks from other states?

Was it Tyranny when another state in the same region got rid of government workers from other sister states next door? Or it's only tyranny when other people do it and never when Obi himself deport other Nigerians out of his state?

You can spin this story anyhow you want to sweeten your tribal desires, but you can not hide from documented facts and records...

I will always be vocal against some perceived infallible status our South West intellectuals ascribe to their popular leaders.

Criticism won't make Yoruba leaders less important in Nigeria.

This so called Reunification and the mechanism on which it was implemented was unconstitutional, illegal and inhumane or worst still racist in flavour.

Why not agree that mistakes were made and the implementation was faulty?

What has happened is noted and is now history as non of the deportees comes from a wealthy or famous family background.

I knew it! These Alausa Liars will dust up every sheet of correspondence in their archives to sell lies to the gullible all in a bit to defend their heartless and wicked act for fellow human being. Now, one of those deportees died three days ago and Fashola's father died yesterday and both have been buried six or four feet deep, is there any difference? Joe Igbokwe is a big embarrassment to the Igbo nation.

In a bid to rid out lunatics on the street of Awka-Ibom just to achieve transformation agenda. The state govt send Babatunde and tunde back to lagos to reunite with their family for proper treatment.
So also lagos state send 72 destitute and lunatics off the street their state to reunite with their family for proper treatment after rehabilitation base on the transformation agenda.
Where is the lie?

As they say, the difference is clear, and below are the very obvious differences. Let's see if we can spot more difference between Lagos State and Akwa Ibom in this cases.

First, unlike Lagos State, there is no evidence/suggestion/allegation that people were rounded, some at gun-point and carted away like refuse with no questions aked.

Unlike the Lagos' case, I see nothing to suggest that the victims where placed in any detention center

Akwa Ibom NEVER dumped anyone in the middle of nowhere in the dead of the night, unlike Lagos State.

Unlike Lagos, when Akwa Ibom said two (2) they actually meant two (2) people, and NOT 70 (or any of it's variants)

Akwa Ibom had medical certificateS to back up their claims of the mental state of those two, and they boasted extensive period caring for them in hospital, while Lagos State whisked Nigerian citizens into various camped, ostensible to teach them useful skills - skill that none of the deportee could confirm as at yet. The real reason is because they were poor and unable to speak the local dialect!

In the case of Akwa Ibom no one died. In the case of Lagos State, we were told by eye witness that 29 died in the detention camp, while one of the deportee was later confirmed dead as a result of ill-treatment suffered in the detention camp, and while being deported.

Akwa Ibom followed through and ensure that those two ON medical leave were indeed from Lagos and were handed over to Lagos State, while Lagos State rounded up several active people hailing from states as diverse as Lagos, Imo, Ebonyi, Abia, Edo, Anambra etc, termed them destitute and dumped them shortly after crossing the River Niger.

The gesture of Akwa Ibom State in my opinion is humane and genuine act of kindness, but that of Lagos State, under the supervision of Fashola is very barbaric, wicked and unconstitutional.

I still call upon Lagos State to release anyone still held hostage in their detention camps.

Your myopic deductions are from an illogical basis where you have manufactured stuff not alluded to by the AKSG. NO where in that wite-up did you see a medical certificate, yet only you, saw and verified one.

Where are you getting your lies about people dying in detention? 29 for that matter!!!

If you are a fellow giving to reasoning and ability to decipher, you would see that when AKSG wrote to the LASG, the LASG responded and took in the two people without questioning. In the Anambra case, the Liaison office went AWOL.

By going AWOL, the Anambra government tacitly bandoned its own people. If you say Igbos were deported, then you accept that they are Igbos, why then did the Anambra Govt not acknowledge them as Igbos and take them in?

INDULGE IN AS MUCH PERSECUTION PROGANDA AS YOU WANT BUT THE FACT REMAINS THAT AKWA IBOM GOVERNMENT SUBSCRIBES TO THE TENET THAT THE BEST WAY TO REHABILITATING DESTITUTES IS TO REUNITE THEM CLOSE TO THEIR FAMILIES.
THE NUMBER DOES NOT MATTER HERE BECAUSE IF SIXTY LAGOSIANS HAD BEEN INVOLVED THEY WOULD HAVE STILL ASK LAGOS TO COME AND PPICK THEM UP.
YOU SEE NOTHING WRONG R STATE GOVT IGNORING TO DO ANYTHING ABOIT THE DESTITUTE S FOR FOUR GOOD MONTHS. YOU WILL NOT AGREE THAT YOUR GOVT DEMONSTRATED AND UTTER CALLOUSNESS TO ITS OWN PEOPLE BUT WOULD RATHER SHOUT YOUR SELF HOARSE IN A SITUATION WHERE GENUINE MISTAKES MIGHT HAVE BEEN MADE BY THE SOCIAL WORKERS YOU CARRIED OUT THE RELOCATION. THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE REACTED IMMATURELY TO THE FACT NO ONE FROM ANAMBRA WAS THERE FOR THE HANDOVER. THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE HUMANE DESPITE THE OBVIOUS INCOMPETENCE OF THE ANAMBRA STATE GOVT.
THE RETATION CEMTE IN IKORODU IS STILL THE BEST AND BETTER FUNDED REHABILITATION CENTER IN COUNTRY TODAY. I KNOW YOU DO NOT HAVE ONE AND DO NOT CARE TO HAVE ONE IN ANAMNRA STATE SO I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY YOU WILL CALL IT A DETENTION CENTER.
YOUR SUGGESTION THAT THEY DESTITUTES SHOULD BE DRIVEN BACK TO THE STREETS IS WHAT YOUR GOVERNMENT DOES OR ELSE I WOULD HAVE ADVISED THAT YOU PROFFER YOUR ASSISINE ADVICE TO THE TRIBAL DEMAGOGUE IN ANAMBRA GOVT HOUSE.

All this self-pity excuse are rubbish. If lagos state can go all the way to take two of their indigenes from akwa-ibom shows how responsible the govt of lagos is. Anambra should have come for their indigenes if they really care about them.

BTW all the point you raised are not point. Those are point from aamaka, obina, emeka and so on are destitute who are deported to akwa. Why don't you get that of Babatunde Obamaiviya and Tunde Jimmy, I think lagos govt should called them out and give their own side of story.
