I have not inspected them up close, so my answer is based on assumption. The tires spare and fitted are of the same diameter and width.

However, from the civilian version which this vehicle was copied from, the same setup is found. The "Roll-up stand banner" which the army sampled to show specifications of the vehicle also has a picture with this same setup.

This means that, the guys who built it are well aware. My question is, this set-up is not obtainable with other vehicles in the same class, why was this setup done this way?

However as u may know the President of Nigeria is privileged with secure phone and vid communication in real time in Aso Rock, Eagle One or anywhere in the world. The Nigerian military also operates a proven and active NEC in war in Africa today that affords the president real time vid in the Situation Room of NAF airstrikes on HVTs, Troop Movements in theater, and or sensitive SBS kill or capture special operations. These are rare capabilities exercised by very few powerful countries.

so based on ur observation ie both the tire diameter and width r same, than the only difference (externally) between the 2 is on account of the tread/tread pattern and lug depth.

what we have is

off-road tire (obviously for better off road activities )

whose job is to provide the best traction possible off road. this means gripping in the sand, dirt, mud, over stone, and even snow. On loose surfaces, off-road tires work by allowing the contact patch of rubber to access the ground underneath the loose material, thus providing recovered traction. it also has treads that are deep. The wide spacing and deep treads are great for soft terrain (muddy , loam etc) because they offer good traction capabilities, but difficult to handle on harder packed surface. They’re generally made from stiffer rubber, so they don’t grip hard terrain as well.


on-road tire ( for the front only, for better on-road performance )

on-road tires have shorter lower profile sidewall to help enhance cornering, as well as wider tread blocks for better dry traction and grip through hard cornering. These wider contact patches of rubber on the road help to drive the vehicle out of a corner without sacrificing speed. they also have directional, or unidirectional tread pattern. These symmetrical tread designs can do a number of things for performance driving applications like provide excellent wet traction and resistance to hydroplaning at high speeds in the rain. they have softer treads which helps to grip the road better, and thus provide provide more traction and improve braking.


so depending on the operational area of the patrol vehicle ie urban areas/rural areas, or on-road/off-road activity etc, the vehicle sports 2 types of tires which will help it to extract better performance and effectiveness in terms of terrain/area specific activities in terms of

1.Short stopping distances
2.Better cornering and handling
3.Enhanced grip/traction
4..Higher speed capabilities

etc
etc

when the above vehicle is stationed in bases / urban areas / provides escort duties to convoys on highways etc , the guys on it will simply swap the off-road tires with the on-road tires (front section ).

and when their duties r in country side patrolling or ops into rural areas , they will keep all the 4 off-road tires.

it is a simple and commonsensical approach to improve performance on the move literally depending on the driving conditions.

There is no way you could be wrong. The tires were too deliberate to be a mistake. I just couldn't phantom why they had them, but i knew it could not have been a mistake.

Your analysis makes good sense. It would have been debatable if the vehicle carried only one tire, however seeing that there are two, it all makes good sense.

Press reporting The Nigerian Air Force is resuming training for it's UAV pilots stalled in 2013. CAS chief Abubakar is definitely a God-sent. Previously trained crews have been very effective in Drone ISR and attack operations to decimate BHT. 5 NAF pilots will be trained for the next 3 months in UAV operations. Nigeria already operates missile armed CH-3A drones for Combat and non-combat roles (a first in Africa). The NAF has also manufactured a new drone and resuscitated another. Curious which? We know the Yabhon Smart eye is coming giving Nigeria dominant UAV ISR & lethal capability.

Nigeria? Damn we have got over 6 airliners in out presidential fleet already so I doubt this. Sputnik seems to be confused except the government wants to use them to set up Nigerian Airways.

NOTAP GRANTS NAF PATENT RIGHT FOR PRODUCTION OF UNMANNED GROUND VEHICLES

The National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) has granted the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) the patent right for the local production of Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs). The production of the UGVs was a Research and Development (R&) effort of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Kaduna. The UGVs are capable of supporting all phases of NAF operations either in hostile environments or concealed areas. They could also be used as security patrol vehicles in NAF bases and other critical national installations.

The AFIT Commandant, Air Vice Marshal Isyaka Bukar, received the patent right certificate on behalf of the NAF today, 12 July 2017. He expressed the determination of the NAF not to relent in the pursuit of innovative projects, being mindful of the impact on national development and preservation of foreign exchange. Air Vice Marshal Bukar also requested for NOTAP’s continued support, as the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, had directed that efforts be intensified towards unveiling more products from the NAF’s R & D efforts.

Speaking during the presentation of the patent right certificate, the Director General of NOTAP, Dr Danazumi Ibrahim commended the efforts of the NAF in developing home grown technology, which he said had helped to place the nation on the path of technological advancement. While reiterating the commitment of NOTAP to encouraging the development of technological capacity in the country, Dr Ibrahim assured the NAF of NOTAP’s support in the quest to optimize indigenous technology. This is the second patent right granted to the NAF by NOTAP, the first being for the Hydraulic Diaphragm on the Mi-35 helicopter.

One night in our Ops Centre over the comms, I was witness to a Recce commander refusing to "fvcking night-infil my men on a fvcking rust bucket Hip" [MI-8]. Our plan had been for 2 Oryx to insert Recces and Uruguayan SF at night ahead of a fleeing foreign element linked to the ADF...[OPSEC precludes me from more details]. Needless to say, URUBATT also scrubbed the mission. The 2 Oryx had been re-tasked to convey Higher UN civilians from New York and the FIB mission had been assigned the MI-8s.

So yes, Oryx rotors overhead is a salvation, especially now that FIB platoons are going out on 24-hour patrols and deliberately initiating contact. Of course Rooivalk have become very valuable assets for CAS in that scenario. Then again, UN and geo-politics has come to knobble the FIB's effectiveness.

NAF LOCALLY REACTIVATES TRAINER UAVs, DORNIER 228 AIRCRAFT

In its continued efforts at reinforcing a culture of self-reliance, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully reactivated 2 Mugin Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for the training of UAV student operators at its 401 Flying Training School (FTS) Kaduna. The repairs on the UAVs were carried out by the Air Force Research and Development Centre (AFRDC). The 2 Mugin trainer UAVs became unserviceable about 7 months ago due to inadequate spares and components thereby putting a temporary stop to the ab-initio training of UAV student operators. With the successful reactivation and modification of the Mugin UAVs, the ab-initio training of UAV student operators has resumed in earnest.

Speaking today at the flagging off ceremony for the resumption of UAV flying training in Kaduna, the Chief of Logistics, Air Vice Marshal Sambo Usman, who represented the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, stated that the reactivation of the trainer UAVs would ensure uninterrupted UAV flying training by the NAF. According to him, the NAF had in the past sought for training slots abroad for the training of its UAV operators without any success thus compelling it to look inwards. The AFRDC was then tasked to select and train UAV operators for the NAF. Since the commencement of the in-house UAV flying training, 9 officers have been trained and subsequently deployed for operational duties. The officers have since then been contributing immensely to the ongoing counterinsurgency operations in the North East, conducting both combat and non-combat Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

In a related development, a DO-228 light transport aircraft, NAF 027, which underwent in-country Periodic Depot Maintenance (PDM), was also handed over to the NAF today. The reactivation was carried out by Messrs DANA Limited in collaboration with NAF technicians. The local reactivation of both the Mugin UAVs and the DO-228 aircraft resulted in huge cost savings aside from the added value of further building the technical capacity of NAF personnel.

I knew sooner, NAF would release photos of the event. We've been having a great time all through in all areas with the Nigerian Air Force. It's been fantastic.

We've built strong capacity which has translated to actionable progress on the ground. I just hope the next NAF chief would continue in this vein.

NAF isn't trying to carry one large rock at a time, rather the service is carrying a small rock 1000 times. A method that is delivering results so well.

I personally noticed plenty of things with the ATV.. The spare wheels were the first. Then the sharp welded edges which we all know how dangerous they are. In most countries you wouldn't sell something that hazardous to the public.

However since it's a Nigerian product, if a South African raised such questions then it's because we're "hating on the west coast boys".

I never once said battalion manoeuvres are irrelevant. My position was, still remains that African militaries should tailor thier trainings to the threats they face.

You don't train to fight a hyena, when most of "your family " have been victims of scorpion attacks.
