Only 3 militaries in africa: Egypt and south africa, and Ethiopia.

I have no interest in your fight with your Nigerian compatriots, apart from polluting this thread with politics. Please refrain from insulting men and women who've taken the uniform in all our continent's countries, severe short-comings notwithstanding.

Was privileged to accompany the magnificent and brave volunteers of NSRI Airborne Sea Rescue Station 29 (AFB Ysterplaat) and the professional aircrew of 22 Squadron (SAAF) during their monthly training exercise yesterday afternoon, during which some of their maritime based colleagues also received some winching experience.

Even more incredible was that these same NSRI Airborne Sea Rescue and SAAF helicopter crew were called out at 05h30 that morning to evacuate a crew member off a fishing trawler NW of Cape Town.

And some ignoramus here dared to belittle such training exercises as mere photo-ops!!! tongue tongue tongue

How do you get ambushed while “keeping a low profile”?
They walked right into a trap.

Bad intelligence
Underestimated their enemy

This guy always defending the U.S undecided

Did you read his statement? He's saying they should have kept low profile like they were taught to. They did this in Afghanistan even before the invasion.

Actually, a mission can always turn bad even when keeping a low profile presence. A good example is that where US lost over 30 men including 15 seals.

it seems the american green berets thought they were on a vacation in Niger (Africa )from black hawk down incident they have never learned

They were very careless, honestly. If you do low convoy patrols you better be very armed, guys like the SAPS Kevoet had 15 machine guns on a single vehicle (1 .50 Browning and 7 LMGS on each side fired from inside the vehicle) and the SASFB has 2 mounted machine guns and 1 hand held at the back on the little Hornet vehicle. If a patrol of 3 SF vehicles came under fire then be guaranteed that 9 machine guns and multiple grenade launchers and RPGs will will fired from those little vehicles.

Somehow, it seems like the Americans don't learn that you never bring little guns to an African conflict..... In the words of Patches, more dakka is required.

True that... However there's ways to minimize that. Here's a few ways of staying low profile

- Intergrate with the local friendly force
- Use the vehicles they use (Toyota technicals and on)
- Wear what they wear (even if it's rag tag uniform and headgear) and conceal the special ops gizmos
- Never use exclusive Uncle Sam rifles, the enemy spotters will definitely know it's you at the distance
- Use makeup to have a similar skintone with the locals (you don't want to look like a Caucasian in the Sahel) ** you won't believe how actually painting yourself works, South African Special Forces entered Maputo Mozambique painted black in the back of an open truck and no one noticed a thing**
- Your patrol vehicles should be spaced when patrolling, not closer than a kilometre per patrol. This discourages ambushes.
- Always bring with you the big guns like RPGs and multiple grenade launchers, they make a devastating impact on the enemy

Do you know that you can actually buy that rifle (semiautomatic) in South Africa as a civilian? For the price of a serious gaming laptop you could walk away with 2 of them. Not joking there.

I'm wary of passing judgement until the full story emerges. Remember Seleka claims of 40 Saffers killed?
What I've been told is that the Yanks operated with outdated intelligence, just like we did in Bangui. Other accounts I've heard say they pursued a few rebels on motor-cycles who gapped it across the border to Mali. These then came back with re-inforcements and ambushed them on their way out of Tongo-Tongo village.

But yes, it sounds like that patrol was criminally under-armed. The first shots of the Battle of Bangui involved a somewhat similar L-shaped ambush on 2 Land Cruisers with extra ammo trailers and 2 Hornets with MLRS trailers of the Recces. Difference being Hornet is far heavier armed even while carrying 8 men. 30 Recces so armed were able to fight their way out of that ambush by an estimated 200 rebels.

A dozen Recces on only the Land Cruisers would not. And that's what the Yanks had to contend with.

The more crucial question for me is why it took an hour into the fire-fight before they radioed the French for CAS, especially as they knew it'd take the frogs another hour to reach them.
