Reutech South Africa DBRXL (RSR 320) - 3D Air Defence Radar Reutech Radar Systems has developed a 3- dimensional ground-based dual-band radar technology demonstrator which deliver world- leading performance in missile fire control applications. This demonstrator has been produced in partnership with the Department of Defence, Armscor, CSIR, Denel and the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town. The system is based on the ESR 220 Thutlwa local warning radar already in service with the SA Army Air Defence Artillery, with the addition of high- accuracy 3D target detection and tracking capabilities. The suitability of the product for the support of ground-based Surface-To-Air Missiles (SAMs) was asserted in the superior tracking accuracy of aircraft under surveillance.

*DAMEN SHIPYARDS CAPE TOWN

DSCT will deliver three Inshore Patrol
Vessels for the South African Navy
Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) has
received an order from Armscor – the
acquisition agency for the South African
Department of Defence – for three Inshore
Patrol Vessels (IPV), 62 x 11 metres. The
vessels form part of the South African
Navy’s Project Biro. The project aims to
develop South Africa’s maritime security,
ensuring that the country has the capability
to respond effectively, rapidly and cost-
efficiently to maritime threats such as
illegal trafficking and fishing.

From the pic, the IPV looks potent, but I'd rather we got 6 OPVs. Oh well, the Cape Town boat industry gets to build more defence products other than Paramount orders for West Africa and gets a break from building yachts for billionaires! grin grin grin

The US under Trump cut the MONUSCO budget by US$100 million last year. More cuts due this year, and the UN cannot afford US$12 million per year for 3 Rooivalks and crew. 16 Squadron's mission due to end in June.
The long-suffering Congolese populace continues to suffer the caprices of games played elsewhere, since the Berlin Conference.

UPDATE 2018-02-26: A spokesperson for UN peacekeeping has provided the following response:

“The Department of Peacekeeping Operations conducted a thorough strategic review of MONUSCO last year to ensure that the Mission is adequately positioned and equipped to respond to the changing threats and challenges. Some of the recommendations of the review are addressed to the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB), of which South Africa and other SADC countries are key contributors. We are discussing with SADC countries as well as with all troop contributing countries, on how best to translate these important recommendations into concrete actions.”

“At the same time, following a review of the United Nations air assets initiated by the Secretary-General and aimed at improving efficiency and make savings in an increasingly constrained financial context of the Organization, it was determined that MONUSCO would need to give up its Rooivalk Helicopters. At this stage, it is considered that the Mission is in position to implement its mandate without additional attack helicopters.”

Newly released photos gives insight on the South African made Cheetahs

The newly released pictures shows that there was quite an extensive work done on the original Mirage III airframe.

Nothing new about it. Go to SA forums like www.saairforce.co.za or www.avcom.co.za and all that info is there.

MISSING DAPCHI GIRLS: CAS TEMPORARILY RELOCATES TO MAIDUGURI, NSA COMMISSIONS PROJECTS TO EXTEND REACH OF NAF HELICOPTERS

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has temporarily relocated to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base at Maiduguri, from where the air search operations for the missing Dapchi girls are being coordinated. This is in order to have first hand information on the progress of the air search efforts and also give additional directives as might be necessary. The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mohammed Monguno was equally at the NAF Base Maiduguri, where he spoke to and encouraged the NAF personnel involved in the day and night air search operations. Furthermore, both the NSA and the CAS visited Damaturu, where they paid a courtesy call on His Excellency, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State, during which they held useful discussions regarding the missing girls. Later in the day, the NSA, accompanied by the CAS and other top military officers, travelled to Monguno to commission new projects at 171 NAF Detachment Monguno. The newly commissioned projects include the Unit’s Headquarters Complex, a block of 4 Single Officers’ Quarters, a block of 10 flats for airmen/airwomen and 2 helipads, all of which have just been constructed.

According to the Commander of the Air Task Force, Air Vice Marshal Idi Lubo, air power projection has limitations, one of which is reach. He therefore expressed his delight, noting that with the commissioning of the projects at 171 NAF Detachment Monguno, the NAF had just extended the reach of its helicopters. In his remarks at the commissioning ceremony, the CAS stated that the projects were undertaken in pursuit of the NAF’s commitment to ensuring security in the Northeast. He added that the NAF would continue to deploy air assets in all parts of the country towards ensuring that Nigerians are able to prosecute their businesses in a safe and secured environment. On the missing Dapchi girls, Air Marshal Abubakar declared that no efforts would be spared by the NAF in locating the girls, in conjunction with other security forces. He disclosed that NAF pilots on different NAF platforms were operating day and night to locate the girls, adding that he had decided to temporarily relocate to Maiduguri, given the import of the unfortunate incident.

While commissioning the projects, the Special Guest of Honour, Mohammed Monguno, lauded the monumental achievements of the NAF under its current leadership. He recalled that 171 NAF Detachment Monguno was only established in 2017; he was therefore surprised to see all that had been accomplished within the short period. He described the feats as a testimony to the zeal and commitment of the CAS to repositioning the NAF into a highly professional force in line with his clearly stated vision. The NSA also described the establishment of NAF presence in Monguno as being long overdue, as it would add the much needed value to the efforts of the other security agencies in ensuring peace in the Northeast. Speaking further, the NSA commended the NAF for its immense contributions to the overall efforts at degrading the capability of the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) while urging NAF personnel to remain steadfast. He equally seized the opportunity to appreciate President Buhari for his support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria in ensuring the sustenance of operations.

Also commissioned yesterday, by the NSA, were a newly constructed Fire Fighting and an Aircraft Arming Bay at NAF Base Maiduguri. It is recalled that the Dapchi girls were declared missing on 19 February 2018 after reported attacks by BHTs following which the NAF immediately commenced an air search for them. The NAF has had to deploy additional air assets, including Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, to the Northeast, on 25 February 208, in a renewed effort at locating the missing girls. The CAS was still in the Northeast as at the time of writing this report.

Whilst we wait for Andrewza to post more pics, I'm hearing good things about your Marines deployed in Lesotho as part of the SADC mission (you cousins are funny -deploying Marines to a land locked mountainous country grin grin grin).
BTW, what's going on at Windhoeker MaschineFabriek? Latest I heard the Wolf MKIII has been postponed and R & D budget is virtually decimated?

Throw-back Thursday.

4 August 2005. The last time the South African Air Force Allo's flew in the Drakensberg. I got this image only after the second attempt that afternoon. It was taken from a BK117. We were running out of daylight and I tried the impossible shot, but brilliant pilots and tons of luck delivered this unique photograph. 17 Squadron skill — Christo Crous, SAAF.
