How KDF has managed to secure the Kenyan-Somali border by winning the hearts and minds of border communities...

This part caught my eye....

“Earlier, we used to view the security agents, particularly KDF, as our enemies and agents of harassment. We are happy that through provision of the humanitarian aids, the locals here in Boni Forest have been drawn closer to them. Sometimes we even board their vehicles when moving from one place to another. They’re our friends,” Mr Buli said.

African countries should look into buying some surplus humvees in the states. I can pick one up down the road for about $5000. There's a company that will do a full rebuild on the drivetrain and interior for about $20 000 all in. They'll drop a brand new Cummins diesel in there for an xtra 5K. You can also get a good LMTV for about 20K. Some of them were in National Guard storage and have very little on the clock.

You can even get financing. Curious to know how much a new Toyota will run you in Nigeria ?

They'll need to be up-amoured like above level 3 protection or else they'll not be useful in our situation. But the cost of the kind of upgrade required for that , we are better off just going for other purpose built lpv

1, KDF humvee Vs IED
2, upgraded Panhard AML Vs IED

I get your point, but light vehicles have a place in COIN ops.
Best defence for IED's is to stay off the roads. Same applies when you patroll on foot. Its been standard procedure in Infantry doctrine for decades. In Iraq, the insurgents just upped the amount of explosives do deal with Mraps.

This is how SF operates hence the use of light vehicles like Jacals and Toyotas. That's not to say that they're ideal for all situations. The terrain might dictate that you're only able to use roads for instance. You'd need armor to deal with the inevitable ambushes and IED's.
Light vehicles make it possible to stay in the field for longer denying insurgencies ground to operate and have an influence on the local populations. It also allows for long range hot pursuit operations and allows you to react quicker in the "whack-a-mole" world of insurgencies.

It's been a real headache for the commanders , Alshabaab hardly fights anymore they are playing the long game of cat and mouse.. it's really frustrating even for me and I'm sitted on the sidelines miles away..

In those pics, you can even see the general body expression of the soldiers and you can tell how such incidents are so demoralising. If you not decipline, soldiers could even take 'revenge' on innocent civilians who the suspect of 'aiding' the enemy... Just look at the blast radius...

2nd pic the IED was identified and safely neutralised (that's why they are smiling)

most of the IED attacks have happened on routine patroll and supply runs... Alshbaab usually don't stick around ..... Anyway I get your point...

In one incident Alshabaab set up three IEDs, one on the road, then other on left and right side of the road just incase KDF discovered the one on the road and decided to vere off road ... (Also in the 1st pic, that white object looks like a timer , coupled with the grey cable... Looks like it was intended to double as a secondary detonation after troops gathered to rescue after the initial blast)
Unfortunately the one on the road went off... But the other two on the sides were neutralised..

Someone is clearly supplying these guys with explosive material cause the new IEDs look like the were made with someone who realy understands how to make them from scratch, a few years ago Alshabaab IEDs were modified WW2 mines or old morter shell or gas cylinder...etc but recently it's all plastic explosive ..and high grade at that..

There was no recession in Nigeria in 1983

Tell us something new. Buhari's failure to heed sound economic advice all but made that recession a reality to the Nigerian people in 1983 something Shagari's stabilization program would have corrected. His intransigent approach to governance is the point here.
In economics the signals you send out makes or mars.

The recession history of Nigeria is a rule of thumb for every sound economist.
It goes as follows; 1987, 1991, 1995 and 2016.
Stop manufacturing recession in your head.

Its really easy for me to sit at a distance and criticize, but the fact is that these type of insurgencies are very hard to combat.
Like you mentioned, they are reverting to a war of attrition and avoiding direct confrontation. I have a lot of sympathy for the commanders that have to try and counter this without the endless resources of the US or EU.

Even the US had to resort to bribing warlords to co-opt the insurgency in Iraq by employing the very people who were shooting at them.

UPDATE ON CRASH OF NAF HELICOPTER IN COMBAT

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of the 5 crew members who were on board the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Mi-35M Helicopter which crashed in combat yesterday, 2 January 2019, while providing close air support to troops of 145 Battalion, Damasak in Borno State. The deceased personnel, whose remains have been recovered to Maiduguri, are:

a. Flight Lieutenant Perowei Jacob - Pilot in Command.
b. Flight Lieutenant Kaltho Paul Kilyofas - Co-Pilot.
c. Sergeant Auwal Ibrahim - Flight Technician.
d. Lance Corporal Adamu Nura - Gunner.
e. Aircraftman Meshack Ishmael - Gunner.

These gallant fallen heroes made the supreme sacrifice in the service of our Fatherland, for which the NAF, and indeed the entire Nation, owes them an unending debt of gratitude. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on behalf all officers, airmen, airwomen and civilian staff of the NAF, commiserates with the families of the 5 fallen heroes and prays that the Almighty grants their souls peaceful repose. The CAS was in Maiduguri today, 3 January 2019, to convey the condolences of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Muhammed Buhari, to personnel of the Air Task Force Operation LAFIYA DOLE over the unfortunate loss. While in Maiduguri, the CAS also received a condolence visit from the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai.

The NAF appreciates the overwhelming support shown by the general public to the Service over the sad incident. We continue to solicit your understanding and support as we daily strive to ensure the security of Nigeria and Nigerians.

Namibia gets a sh1t load of tourists this time of year, and it could just be that the police are overstretched.

Besides Namibia is an extremely safe and stable country with no history of any civil intimidation/oppression.... If anything we should take Namibia as an example to follow.

Ideally wouldn't you want clearly defined roles for your cops and army? If shyt gets really heavy perhaps a paramilitary gendarme like our GSU has a role since army in clearly civvy roles seems like overkill to me.

RIP to the Nigerian Air Force pilot and his brave crew.

Without the Nigerian Air Force, the North-East would have been completely overrun by Boko-Haram/ISWAP.

Very good men. Young families. Great loss.
The MI 35M is $35m. Has to be mechanical failure or a MANPAD.
