I believe it's time Nigeria started partnering with other developing countries to grow the defense industry.
South Africa has a lot to offer especially for the Army. DICON, NAMVC and proforce can grow exponentially and start producing IFVs and light tanks within 15 years if the right connections are made with SA defense military and industries. We can even get enough tech support to start an ordnance industry to produce artilleries, mortars and their ammunitions,missiles etc.
The airforce could also benefit from tech know how and start doing some aircraft maintenance that are normally done outside the country. They could also look into radars.

As for the navy, in addition to partnership with SA, we could also look into other countries like Singapore and Turkey.

Truth is that the military will still be dealing with major internal security issues a long time from now especially with the banditry issues in the northwest and growing the local defense industries will be of great value to the country.


It is amazing that as large as the defense budget of Egypt and Algeria is, there defense industry isn't that great we could have benefitted a lot from them too but they prefer to buy almost everything.

I agree with this, for Egypt they produce Abrams Tanks, and build Gowind Corvettes in the country, under license though.

I'm more surprised by Algeria. They should be building a lot of Russian tech in the country by now.

They don't have any significant defence industry there.

DICON got license to produce beryl riffles and there allocation for the assembly line was even added to the budget and we are yet to see meaningful results. Many of our neighbors will be willing to buy the beryl.

Maybe DICON should be turned into a real company with FG as share holder through the defense ministry for the purpose of profit making. Maybe this will increase their productivity.

That's a sea eagle class boat, built in Singapore, not SDB 3.

This is SDB 3, scheduled for launch this month, but I don't think they would meet up.

Thats true , russians are not known for technology transfert , they are mostly present in big maintenance facilities in algeria , and for the billions that are spent every year we should have a better defence industry,

for algerian military industry , they work mostly with east europ countries , germany , emirates .

for naval industry

there is the ECRN company in Mers el-Kébir naval base they produce loccaly :

- the Raïs Hassan Barbière class , 62m long locally design and built, in 2017 . ( on the pic 1 ) equiped with 4 x C-802 missiles launchers , 76 mm PJ26 canon , 347G and Type 363 radars , CWIS Type 730 30mm
- the Djebel Chenoua class 58m long . locally design and built, 3 built since 90's (pic 2.3.4) equipped with 4 x C-802 missiles , 1 AK-176 (76mm) and 1 AK-630 (6 x 30 mm)
- the Kebir class patrollers 38 m long ( 12 built ) ,
- and many other smaller boats + maintenance

there was in last years many reports of big fregates that will be built locally ECRN company like the Meko A200 but we have seen nothing until now

for air sector

- the ECA company produce locally since 1987 the Firnas-142 and Safir-43 (on the pics 1,2) ,variants from the Czechoslovakian trainer aircraft ZLIN-142
- also they domestically produced the Eljazair 54 and Eljazair 55 based on UAE Yabhon United type drones
- Leonardo-Finmeccanica facility is build in Aïn Arnat, Algeria , it will be finished soon and will produce AgustaWestland 3 light and medium helicopters in few month

for army there is

- the ECMK company : they produce locally : rifles , shotguns, submachine guns and automatic pistols , PA Makarov , PA Caracal F (UAE license) , différent version of AKM , SVD (Dragunov) , RS 202P shotgun , RPD machine gun ,GP-25 Grenade Launchers , RPG-7V and even QW-2 Vanguard 2 MANPAD under license .


- the ONEX company produce : all algerian army ammunitions , grenades, anti-tank mines , hunting cartridges and a dozen varieties of explosives

- the EHC company produce locally all army needs in combat gear, sleeping, camouflage , clothing , tents ect...

- Scafse company work with Eads Cassidian , Rohde & Schwarz and carl zeiss and produce a lot of electronic and optic systems , and even the spexer-2000 ground radar

- also another company that produce tactical and operative radiocommunication equipments with a lot of diffrent equipments built under license from (sony Ericsson, Konsberg, US Harris , russian Radio Ryazan , and chineses companies )

for vehicles ;

- The fox 2 built locally under german license

the nimr II built under emirats license

there is also a big facility of the SAFAV company with Mercedes benz license they build the unimog and zetros trucks and many Class G versions and other utility vehicles
