‘Wars can’t be fought on the cheap’: Experts and special forces call for more infantry and equipment in Mozambique

Military officials originally envisioned Samim as a force of almost 3,000 soldiers with a few hundred special forces soldiers in the vanguard, to be bolstered by three battalions of infantry. They were also supposed to be supported by several attack and transport helicopters and other air and naval support.

But the infantry have not been deployed and neither have the helicopter gunships.

Two South African Air Force Oryx utility helicopters are doing most of the airlifting, providing vital support to a few hundred special forces from South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana and Lesotho. Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi and Zambia are also contributing to Samim, but mostly with logistics.

The two Oryx helicopters are clearly overstretched and both have been hit by gunfire, sources say. They are battling to supply reinforcements for forces that come under attack because of their many other assignments in a rising number of clashes with the enemy.

But the special forces are nonetheless more overstretched than they need to be or should be in a counter-insurgency war. Though the Rwandans were originally in the forefront of the early fighting, they appear to have subsequently stuck to a restricted mandate, protecting the liquid natural gas processing facilities at Afungi near Palma in the far northeast of Cabo Delgado and also to keep open a 70km corridor from there to the port of Mocimboa da Praia in the south.

This has left Samim and FADM to police a large warzone which has recently expanded, as their operations have driven some insurgents into Niassa province, west of Cabo Delgado.

Mozambican soldiers have been widely criticised for running away when attacked, but much of their problem seems to be that they are badly equipped, especially when it comes to ammunition
.

The journal Vrye Weekblad reported last week that the parlous condition of the state arms company, Denel, was part of the reason only two Oryx helicopters and no Rooivalk attack helicopters had been sent to Mozambique.

Kikuyu1, we're not really surprised by this, are we? Seeing as Total paid Kagame for his troops.

Hellz no! ONLY to be expected. There's no way an insignificant 5th world nation like Kagameland can afford such an open ended engagement.
Btw, some time back I had photos of their "specops" deploying and in the field. A glance will show an elementary bit of missing kit proving they're posers. Anyway, for the Rwanda militia back to their true status as security guards.

South Africa launching three nanosatellites in R27 million project

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Blade Nzimande announced that South Africa is gearing up to launch three locally produced nanosatellites on Thursday, 13 January 2022.

The three nanosatellites (MDASat-1) are the first of the Department of Science and Innovation’s (DSI) Maritime Domain Awareness Satellite (MDASat) constellation.

At full operation, the constellation will have a total of nine cube satellites to detect, identify, and monitor vessels in South African waters in near real-time.

Thursday’s launch comes three years after the launch of South Africa’s most advanced nanosatellite, the ZACube-2.

“Since its launch in 2018, ZACube-2 has been providing cutting-edge very high frequency (VHF) data exchange communication systems to the country’s maritime industry, as a contribution to Operation Phakisa,” Nzimande said.

He added that the DSI had invested R27 million over the past three years to develop the MDASat constellation.

The DSI is collaborating with the Cape Peninsula University of Technology to implement the work.

The minister alluded to the lack of space professionals in South Africa, saying that the shortage had prompted the DSI and National Research Foundation (NRF) to start a human capital development programme at CPUT.

In collaboration with the French South African Institute of Technology (F’SATI) cube satellite (CubeSat) programme, the DSI and NRF introduced a Master’s in Electrical Engineering specialising in satellite systems.

“As part of this programme, students are taught engineering principles using CubeSats as training tools,” Dr Nzimande said.

“CubeSats are built using the same engineering principles as any other satellite, hence highly specialised and advanced skills are acquired through this programme.”

The MDASat-1 launch will see the first satellite constellation developed entirely in Africa sent into space.

The satellites are scheduled to be launched from Cape Canaveral in the United States on Thursday, 13 January 2022, at 17:25 South African Standard Time aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The mission is called Transporter-3.

Warfighting ishyt cheap ofc- the platforms and training should be looked at as investments. The gunships, UAVs,MRAPSs, ARVs etc, etc are national assets for self defence.

Let's look at Moz'.

[
b]The gas projects are estimated to be worth US$60 billion in total. [/b]Some observers recently predicted that Mozambique could become one of the top ten LNG producers in the world.

The development of the projects had led to the area becoming a hive of economic activity.
https://theconversation.com/offshore-gas-finds-offered-major-promise-for-mozambique-what-went-wrong-158079

If they'd spent just 2.5% or 1.5 bn $ of that on defence I doubt the String Pullers would've instigated this f'ery. Look at the opportunity cost . I can't find anything on damaged or destroyed oil and gas rigs but look at the delayed sales from postponed LNG sales, the homelessness, shattered lives and 4000+ dead.
In the long run what is cheaper?

Ghana receives Flex Fighter vessels

Ghana’s Navy is adding four new vessels to its fleet to enhance maritime security and protect offshore oil and gas installations.

The four Flex Fighter vessels arrived over the weekend from Singapore’s Penguin Shipyard. Ghana Navy Ships (GNS) Volta, Densu, Pra and Ankobra arrived on board the merchant vessel BBC Nile and according to local media are at the quayside of Takoradi port. Ship tracking data shows the BBC Nile left Singapore on 13 December, arriving in Takoradi on 8 January.

Once the Flex Fighters have been offloaded, they will be based under Western Naval Command at Sekondi, where the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will name and commission them.

According to Penguin Shipyard, the Flex Fighter is based on the company’s proven Flex 40 series of crew boats, but fitted with all-round wheelhouse ballistic protection (STANAG Level I), machinegun mounts with gunner shields forward and aft, and cabins and amenities for 12 security personnel.

The 40 metre long aluminium-hulled Flex Fighter is powered by three Caterpillar C32 main engines each developing 1 450 hp, giving a top speed of 28 knots. Up to 54 passengers can be seated and there is a 93 square metre cargo deck.

Next year Ghana will take delivery of two more vessels – these are SAFE Boats International Defenders, being acquired via the US Coast Guard. SAFE Boats International will supply two 38-foot (12 m) Defender class boats along with trailers, spare parts and training. They will be used to help Ghana fight piracy and other maritime crime.

Ghana has previously received other Defender class boats from the United States: by 2015 the US Coast Guard had given Ghana’s Navy five 27-foot Defender class boats to aid their operations.

Currently, piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea continue to pose significant threats to national and regional maritime activities, including the operations of the facilities of the offshore oil and gas sector. In response, Ghana has been strengthening its navy.

Ghana has slowly built up its naval capabilities, introducing new vessels into service over the last decade. In October 2017 it commissioned into service four patrol boats donated by China. The four Chinese-made patrol boats (985Y) have a maximum displacement of 8.6 tons, a maximum speed of 38 knots and range of 220 nautical miles.

Previously, Ghana has bought Chinese military hardware that includes two 46 metre patrol vessels ordered from Poly Technologies in 2008. The two were commissioned in 2011. The navy also operates several other fast attack craft and patrol boats that were ordered from South Korea, the United States and Germany over the past decade.

New naval infrastructure is also being added, including multiple forward operating bases across the coastline.

Meanwhile, in Mozambique.

BDF CONTINGENT IN MOZAMBIQUE DONATES TO MUEDA RURAL HOSPITAL

The Botswana Contingent which is part of SADC forces fighting terrorism in Mozambique has donated different equipment and supplies to Mueda Rural Hospital as a way of giving back to the community. Amongst the donated items were 20 large mattresses for adults’ ward, 20 small mattresses for children’s ward, a 42-inch television set with Decoder subscribed for four months, 25 scooter toys, 4 seater benches, 10 playing balls, 8 children’s tables and 34 kids chairs.
The donation came after an assessment was carried out by the BDF Squadron based in Mueda. Almost all the hospital wards were found to be in a state of need for renovation and upgrading. From the assessment the team agreed on upgrading the Paediatrics and Maternity wards by providing necessary equipment such as mattresses, television set, benches and children’s toys.

The BDF Contingent is part of SAMIM forces in support of the Government of Mozambique mandated to create conditions necessary for a return to normal life in the Province of Cabo Delgado. The mandate aims at eradicating acts of terrorism in order to achieve a peaceful, stable and secure Cabo Delgado as well as the entire country of Mozambique.

Silent and Deadly: increasing activities of Nigeria’s Special Forces

Nigeria’s elite combat units are coming out of the shadows and taking the fight to the country’s enemies. In the past few months, there has been a noticeable rise in their combat activities across the country.

Special operations are usually clad in secrecy, for operational security (Opsec) reasons, and most battlefield activities do not find their way into the public domain.

It is that cloak of mystery, which makes them effective, and no country discloses information about its Special Forces, Nigeria inclusive.

Nigerian Navy SBS (NNSBS) during a training exercise.
Nigeria continues to struggle with insecurity, claiming the lives of tens of thousands and displacing millions due to armed banditry, kidnapping, Boko Haram, and the Islamic State.

The West African country operates a multi-tiered special operations forces; with the Navy’s Special Boat Service (NNSBS) in Tier 1, the Army’s 72 Special Forces Battalion, and Air Force’ QRF “Panthers” in Tier 2 respectively, and by comparison, the Armed Forces Special Forces (AFSF) are the Tier 3 operators.

In his article he said AFSF are teir 3... I would have disagreed with him, but after a careful thought I realized there is no proper classification of special forces in the country, therefore classification is based on perception...
While we know the Navy spends highly on it units in kitting and training hence making them the best, the other arms are so secretive that we can't tell how well they are trained... Tho we see pictures of N.A sf and DHQ Sf, the only thing u can take from those pics are cleaned rifles and hardly do u find some particular accessories required for SFs.. but when u see the Navy's outfits that's not the case...
Personally I rate AFSF above army's and airforce SFs because DHQ has better funding and acccess to overseas training than the Army or airforce do..
When it comes to desert warfare and counter insurgency I believe AFSF and Army's sf ranks above the Navy's specialist... But in general ranking the navy would be ontop.
