APMT to build mega port, FTZ in Badagry

APM Terminals and its consortium of partners have announced plans to develop a new mega-port project and Free Trade Zone at Badagry in Lagos State.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to open in 2016.

Also Plans for the adjoining Badagry Free Trade Zone will include a power plant, oil refinery, industrial park and warehousing and Inland Container Deport functions.

On completion, the deep-water full-service port will be one of the largest inAfricawith seven km of quay and 1,000 hectares (2,470 acres) of dedicated yard, and will include state-of the art facilities for container, bulk, liquid bulk, Ro/Ro and general cargo as well as oil and gas operations support and a barge terminal.

CEO, APM Terminals Africa-Middle East Regional, Peder Sondergaard, said that the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)LagosStateand the Federal Government have been supportive and positive, saying, “We are actively working with the Federal and State Government on the permission process.”

It would be recalled that in his keynote address at the 12th Maritime Seminar for Judges in Abuja in June this year, Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, alluded to the proposed Badagry Port project as significant of a public-private partnership development which would help to address congestion and establish Nigeria as a maritime trading hub for West and Central Africa.

Accordingly, the Benin-Lagos Expressway is currently being upgraded to a 10-lane highway which will facilitate cargo movements to and from inland destinations in the region.

Sondergaard stated, “APM Terminals is currently one of the largest port and terminal operators in Africa, and in West Africa in particular, where APM Terminals Global Terminal Network include nine facilities in eight West African nations, including Apapa Container Terminal, and West Africa Container Terminal inOnne,Nigeria. APM Terminals Apapa, which assumed operations atLagos’ Apapa Container Terminal in 2006 is now the busiest container terminal inWest Africa, handling 600,000 TEUs in 2011 with through-put for 2012 projected to be 720,000 TEUs.

“Industry analysts have predicted that Nigerian container volume, which totaled 1.4 million TEUs in 2011, will outstrip existing port capacity by 2017, presently, about 85 percent of all Nigerian non-oil cargo passes through thePortofLagos”.

Over the next three decades, Nigerian annual container traffic is expected to grow to 10 million TEUs.

“The proposed Badagry Mega-Port project fits well into APM Terminals’ strategy of infrastructure development in targeted high-growth markets. Current new terminal and port expansion projects and investments includeMoin,Costa Rica;Callao,Peru;Santos,Brazil;Ningbo,ChinaandPoti,Georgia.

The Badagry consortium partnership is comprised of APM Terminals, Orlean Invest, the Macquarie Group, Oando PLC, the Chagoury Group and Terminal Investment Limited. Support for the project has also been expressed by the Nigerian Ports Authority, and the Governor of Lagos State.”

With 170 million people,Nigeriais the largest country inAfricaby population, and the 7th-largest worldwide. By 2050, the UN forecast thatNigeria’s population would have risen to 289 million behindIndia,China, theUSAandPakistanin global population ranking.

CyberG:

No industrialization should not and will not move away from Lagos. Maybe you meant extending deeper into the Yoruba SW? A place cannot be industrialized enough for even developed countries keep developing and re-developing all over again, we see it everyday. I want Lagos to take it's tourism several notches higher and continually cement its place as the business, finance and business headquarters of the country (while it remains and ultimately the Yoruba City-State when Nigeria calls it a day!). I hope the Lekki Airport, FTZ and Eko Atlantic make quick progress too! grin grin

Extending of course. We still have the LFTZ and Badagry LFT on tap, Ikorodu industrial estate is still expanding, Matori, Ilupeju, Mushin, Apapa and Ikeja industrial estates are still blasting, the printing Industry in Shomolu is getting needed attention with their own IPP, name brand hotels are changing the skyline and landscape, the food, fashion and entertainment industry are on the up n up non stop, we still have the cable cars coming, Meto rail is almost here, Eko waters with new 200 capacity boats each is almost here...

....and the state institutions stepping up to support the growth and development.

The sky is the limit for Lagos state.

For the rest of the SW, the story is almost the same starting from Ogun all the way to Osun. Osun is moving to dominate agric, Ogun and Ondo both have joint FTZ/OKFTZ with deep seaport and refineries under construction. The are at least 3 refineries on tap for the SW.

With available resouces, Ondo is under performing because of lousy leadership and poor focus.

Oyo is redefining Oluyole industrial estate and the same PG we are talking are manufacturing goods and services there.

DAWN sounds good and more robust than OODUA Investement of decades ago which is still the very active.

We are really blessed with strong and capable leaders, my only concern remains the usual FG obstruction and bad bele.

First, I agree with your brief assessment on Ondo. I am not partisan for any party, only the most performant party and now ACN (APC) it has been going by the result. I hope Ondo State joins the progressives soon and it doesn't matter if it is ACN or not for even if they get complacent and relax (I hope not) they will be voted out! We want only very aggressive parties and leaders who are MOST passionate about our lands, the blessed lands of the Yorubas! While doing that, I like the current strategy where it appears as though Tinubu and some of his lieutenants continually play up the game at the centre and take the hits while the governors concentrate on their work of development on the states. Imagine the distraction if someone like Fashola was continually responding or distracted by the no do-gooders in the FG or other states. Yes, I read a big chunk of the DAWN document and hope to finish it and I just can't wait to see more progress! Unlike in the past when Chief Awolowo and the SW led the country's development and allowed other people (e.g. the now ungrateful people by the Niger side) to partake freely, I strongly suggest that a concerted efforts to register peoples as Yoruba natives, residents (non Yorubas) and foreigners be strongly implemented. They can come and live in our lands while Nigeria remains but their must be differential school fees at our universities, primary and secondary schools, health care centres and taxation. The highest quality of life in Nigeria is not going to be free, some people's vision, energy, intellect and leadership are creating it so it CANNOT BE FREE! If any one feels it should be free, they should get the FG to budget X M naira per year on behalf of people who think they should live in the SW without commensurate financial contributions! Of course, our lands are no go areas for ANY non-Yoruba resident. They can lease it 5-10 years (renewable once or twice after which they should negotiate another deal for another piece of land). The foreigners, big companies with investment dollars who are not looking to claim ownership of lands and are happy to see our fascinating culture can be allowed to lease for longer periods of time like 20 years, renewable as often as they choose!

Your other points about the FTZs, refineries, etc will cause some people headache and heart attack here! grin grin

i dnt agree with u. having foreign investment doesnt affect local developement as long as it is not importation based. this investment is manufacturing based of which local enterpreneurs can understudy and learn from. for exam we have MTN before GLO came onboard, so also cement productn was mainly foreign companies but now we have dangote dominating which can be replicated in every sector of the soceity. the so called japanese, chinese & indonesian still have american ,briton, german, french companies in their abode.

this developement is a right step in a right directn

CyberG: I like to see Lagos maintain it's business, industrial, technology, transportation leadership while adding tourism on a massive scale! Again, people who are not natively from the State or Yorubaland who are constituting a nuisance be removed for goodness sake! The Yorubas from Lagos who are in other States even in the SW should be brought back, it is really a good thing because ultimately we are working towards the same goal, the money spent in taking care of them is money spent from our ultimate shared "pockets"! Of course, let the Yorubas in the states, even when poor or sick, be taken care of in the best way possible before being re-united back with their families. Non-Yorubas who contribute financially (taxes), work to sweep and clean our lands, contribute something even real hardwork can by all means stay for now only the state governments should be enumerating each of these people regularly and enacting the most comprehensive taxation system in our states so no one benefits without paying a fair share! The destitutes, lazy, criminals (a lot of them cause only problems and reduce the quality of our Yoruba country-state) should be removed and transported back to their States with due process! The lazy and irresponsible governments who play politics and do not show-up to carry their people should be pre-informed that such human cargo will be delivered to their lands at any convenient time of the 24 hour day so if they don't want them at 3 pm, they should be on sit by 9 am in the morning so they can receive them and take care of them!

So true! I'm not trying to be tribalistic but i know many areas in the south-south are fond of the above observation.

Certainly you do not understand the economics of the 160 million man Nigerian market because you do not take your bath like hundreds of millions of Nigerians and West Africans do, neither do you have any wife or kids that use pads and disposable diapers

General Buhari is, in my opinion, one of the detribalized Nigerians we have on NL. Many of us here know him to appreciate he contributed his opinion without ethnic malice.

I have no problem with anyone rounding on confirmed bigots but shouting down every contributor because of their ethnic origin, without attempting to be fair to their known character and identity here, is redolent of unthinking ALUU lynch mob behaviour.

You all, whether Igbo or Yoruba, should remember that "an eye for an eye leaves the world blind". In society, there is order. There should be order on this forum too and we should all speak in defence of that. This blanket demonization of posters because of their ethnic origin, currently at an unacceptable level, should stop !!!
