Sports And Fun-An Islamic Perspective. by lanrexlan(m): 3:30pm On Aug 13, 2013
Fun and sports are intertwined, while fun is playful behavior or pleasurable activity, sport is physical and mental activity like games done as exercise for sound health, relation, excitement and pleasure.
Sports/games include cricket,bicycling, hockey,football,shooting,wrestling, volleyball,boxing,tennis,basketball, gymnastic,athletics,swimming,weight lifting,boating,chess,computer/TV games etc.
Some people take fun in singing/music, fashion, beauty modeling,film/movie,while some rich people are beguiled with acquiring every known material wealth. It is good that one know how to do certain sporting activities, but then often times, many of these activities have no moral or even socio- cultural justifications.
Only that the lopsidedness in the world today has given fun and sports the prestigious seat, which either may not merit. This has led to social and economic rivalry;as well as high esteem and value voted to it by some people even over religious activities. This conscious or unconscious over-value of fun and sports over the true acts of salvation calls for change in our lives.

BENEFITS AND DISADVEANTAGES OF SPORTS: Among the benefits are mental alertness and sharp mind, stress reduction, physical fitness,self-confidence,fame,attractive monetary and material reward, beautiful price, prevention of certain ill health and pleasure.

Disadvantages include injuries, withdrawal symptoms, negligence of duty, drug abuse, evil of betting and gambling, disregard for religious stipulations and distraction from studies among others.

THE WAY PEOPLE TAKE IT:
Purpose of sports and games nowadays have shifted from what it was or used to be during their formations.Sports and games are now characterized with dirty and sarcastic language, betting, gambling, violence, hooliganism, corruption, fraud and cheating, killing, hatred, unclothedness and negligence of worship.
Priority is being given to sporting activities over other meaningful things.Real work and essence of life which is worship are being neglected.Everyday is becoming sports-day for some people and many have turned to be sportscasters without working in a studio.
They discuss sport than their own education and professions and they read sports news than their academic or religious books.Today while some teenagers and youths are becoming non-studio/pitch sportscasters especially on football, many don't know how to do simple sports like bicycling,swimming,high-jump,judo and the likes that can be of self defense or means of rescue or safety services to the people.
Many Muslims do not know the life history or contribution of a caliph or sahaba to Islam and many do not know simple hadiths of the prophet or what Quran says on certain issues.
However, they can tell you off hand all the scorers of the past tournaments and their goal numbers, showing what they give their lives to and what they dedicate most of their times. Many find their mentors/ models in film stars, other in musicians and some in beauty models. They esteem them, talk and think about them and act like them in a way they suppose to study the Quran and hadith as well as righteous foremost imams in Islamic history. And among the rich, mutual rivalry to acquiring and pilling up money and wealth is their game/hobby.
Latest car, structure, and electronics and all sorts of material wealth are their focus and center of discussion.Yet,so many people compete in crime and sin such as rape, fornication, drunkenness and fraud.People just want to lead a pleasurable life;life full of fun and excitement at all cost and at the expense of their faith and salvation
Allah says in Surah Az-Zumar 39:67- ...they give not the esteem of Allah such as is due to Him…

WHAT ALLAH WANTS US TO KNOW:
Allah says in Surah Al-Hadid 57:20- “Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you and rivalry in respect of wealth and children…And the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment.

This warns us against having excessive interest in sports as most right thing and ultimate goal.Indeed all the innovated sports and games we are doing will complicate our living in this world, which Allah has pronounced to be sport and amusement.Whereas,we have not been created for fun and sports but to know and worship Allah. It means that mad rush towards sports/games and fun and their excitement and beauty are not real but dangerous and futility of existence.

Allah awakes our unsuspecting souls in Surah Al-Maidah 5:100- Say:not equal are things that are bad and things that are good even though the abundance of bad may dazzle you,so fear Allah o you who understand, that you may prosper
That is to say,we should not judge or be influenced by quantity rather than quality. The madness that makes people dazzle for football, music and films everywhere should not capture our hearts.Instead,Allah wants us to be a man of understanding and discrimination who judge by wisdom and piety and remain uninfluenced but choose the best race He has prescribed for us,even if the people desert it.

Allah says in Surah Al-Anam 6:116- Were you to follow the common run of those on earth, they will lead you astray from Allah’s path. They follow nothing but conjecture and they do nothing but lie.
Friend, family or relative must not influence us as well.
Allah says in Surah Al-Anam 6:70- And leave alone those who take their religion as sport and amusement and whom the life of this world has deceived. But remind them with it (Quran).

WHAT IS FORBIDDEN IN FUN AND GAMES:
There are good and bad sports/games in the light of Islamic truth even though it may not appeal to us or those who make them professions.
The prophet(pbuh) prohibits dice, chess and the likes such as backgammon and card games.Likewise there are bad or sinful ways some games are played.
Any game that reveals the body parts counted as naked by Islam in both men and women is not lawful.Salat should not be delayed by any game as even wars fought by Muslims did not deny them salat, and such must not include any falsehood, obscenity, swearing or insulting,it should be free of alcohol and drug abuse and must avoid betting, gambling, staking.

It should not be for fun only without application to social life or jihad fiisabilillah. And the sport or game or fun itself, must not be allowed to dominate or occupy one’s life to the extent of stifling worship, academic pursuit, professional practice, moral development, family responsibility and spiritual growth.

Contemplation of Allah’s sign is far better than any kind of fun. All games and fun are unpredictable, there is always degree of uncertainty about the winner or result, whereas not so the path and act of essence of life. Therefore, one should not allow certitude to be overridden or defeated by probability, and in fact it cannot!

SPORT AND FUN IN ISLAM:
Sports and fun according to Islam are not an end in themselves but fractional means to the essence of our lives, which is Ibadah. This is why some acts of ibadah (worship) such as salat;hajj;dawah and jihad carry in them some elements and sporting characteristics.
Sports, games, race and fun are not the essence of life, they are mere entertainment and very transient like their effects of pleasure, therefore must not dictate over other activities of our lives, especially worship in Islam.
There must always be check and balances in one’s living.A life full of fun and games is futile.
Allah reminds us of our purpose of existence on earth in Surah Ad-Dhariyat 51:56- I have not created the Jinn and Mankind for no other purpose except that they should worship Me

This is the fact, and if we think otherwise, we are further informed in Surah Al-Anbiyaa 21:16-17- We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them for mere play.

Sport does not count before Him,but genuine faith and worship of Him found in Islam that has value.

Yes, gambling games like poker, cards and dice are haram because their mainly due to chance before numbers

However, chess is not a gameof chance. It is a game of strategy.

Chess is not haram

Well, let us consider 2 things

1) Modern chess is different from the chess played in 700 ad in the Arab areas

2) There is disagreement among scholars on the status of chess. One opinion is that chess is halal if it is not sed for gambling.
