Mohammed reclaimed its place as the most popular name for baby boys born in England and Wales in 2011 — convincingly ahead of Harry, in second place, according to data released by the government this week.
The government declared that Harry was the most popular boy’s name, but ifyou add up the five most popular different spellingsof Mohammed, that name comes top.
Mohammed is also the most popular boy’s name of the past five years for England and Wales, aheadof Oliver and Jack. It camefirst or second every year since 2007, the only nameto do so.
And it could become even more popular in 2012, given the adulation around long-distance runner Mo Farah, who won two gold medals for Britain at the Olympics.
The popularity of the name comes as Britain’s Muslim population is expected to double in the next 20 years.
The country, which was about 2% Muslim in 1990, grew to 4.6% Muslim in 2010, with nearly 2.9 million followers of the faith, according to analysis by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.
By 2030, the United Kingdom will be just over 8% Muslim, with more than 5.5 million adherents, the Washington-based think tank projected in a 2011 report, “The Future of the Global Muslim Population.”
Mohammed first became the most popular boy’s name in England in 2009, then was knocked back into second place the nextyear as Oliver enjoyed a huge surge in popularity.
Harry, the name of Prince William’s younger brotherand J.K. Rowling’s boy wizard, leaped into second place in 2011, with 7,523 boys given themoniker, topping the 7,007 Olivers.
But the name of the Muslim prophet was givento 7,907 baby boys, according to CNN analysis of Office of National Statistics data. Mohammed, Muhammad and Mohammad were all among the top 100 most popular names, with Muhammed and Mohamedalso coming in the top 200.
A total of 37,564 babies have been given a variation of the name in the past five years. Some 36,653 Olivers and 36,581Jacks were born in England and Wales since 2007. The British government keeps separate statistics for Scotland and for Northern Ireland, the other two nations that make up the United Kingdom.
The 2011 British census had an optional question about religion. Results areexpected in November.
At least four different spellings of the name Mohammed are among the 1,000 most popular American boys’ names in 2011, according to the Social Security Administration.
Mohamed is the top, in 428th place, with Muhammad in 480th, Mohammed in 562nd and Mohammad in 609th.
The United States is about0.8% Muslim, with about 2.6 million adherents, the Pew Forum calculates.

Muhammed has become the most popular name for baby boys in London for the first time.

Combined spellings of the Islamic prophet’s name have made it the most popular name for newborn boys in England for three years in a row.

They rank higher than other favourites such as Harry and Jack in the top 100 names for boys from the Office for National Statistics.

Now, however, the single variant Muhammad has topped the list in the capital with 768 registered births last year, ahead of Daniel on 666.
Baby names

When combined with Mohammed, the name was more than double any other with 1479 boys given the name.

Across England, a total of 7,032 babies were given the name using the spellings of Muhammad (18th), Mohammed (25th) and Mohammad (58th) – topping the 6,893 that were called Harry.

On the top 100 names for boys and girls, there has been a surge in names probably more often seen in an Edwardian novel.

While Harry and Amelia were the most popular baby names in 2012 for the second year running, names such as Hugo, Sonny and Seth for boys, and Ivy, Darcey, Tilly and Violet for girls are storming up the list.

Meanwhile several modern names which had gained popularity in recent years – including Ashton and Reece for boys and Nicole and Kayla for girls – have dropped out of the top 100 altogether.

Lisa Penney, of the parenting club Bounty.com, believes that while celebrity-styled or unusual names may be fun, parents know their children will ‘probably have an easier ride in the playground if they choose a more traditional name’.
Darcey Bussell
Prince Harry

Putting names to famous faces: Prince Harry (right) may have little to do with the steady popularity of his name but Darcey Bussell's (right) role on Strictly Come Dancing is said to have inspired a new generation of Darceys

She said: ‘We are now seeing a growing trend for “old man” and “old lady” names.

‘Just a few years ago Ava and Isla were relatively unheard of as a baby girl’s name, yet now they are in the top 20.’

Netmums founder Siobhan Freegard said: ‘Many mums are looking back into their family tree and selecting great-grandparents’ names, while others are seeking names which would have seemed stuffy a decade ago but fit with the current retro vibe across the UK.’

It has been suggested that television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, which counts former ballerina Darcey Bussell as one of its judges, could be responsible for boosting the popularity of the name Darcey.

Since 1999 the number of babies called Mohammed, however spelled, has increased by more than half.
