Hum, big revelation on this matter, *SPOILERS DOWN BELOW* , the anime didn't get this far in the story:
In reality, Zangetsu is not the real Zanpakto of Ichigo, the Hollow in him is the REAL spirit of the Zanpakto.
The mother of Ichigo was a QUINCY and his father is a Shinigami, Ichigo is born from this union.
Zangetsu the old man in the world of the Zanpakto is THE FINAL BAD GUY, he is BAD, EVIL he is the enemy of Ichigo and the hollow is the GOOD guy actually!!! Zangetsu is a parasite who was placed in Ichigo by the LORD OF ALL THE QUINCY, he is not dead, he didn't die in the war against the Shinigami!!!
He created a new army of QUINCY and his aim is to DESTROY SOUL SOCIETY AND TO KILL ALL THE SHINIGAMIS!!!
The new quincys that he created are a mix between HOLLOWS AND THE FORMER QUINCYS!!!![just like how the espadas were a kind of mix between shinigamis and hollows]
Anyway, ISHIDA HAS JOINED THE ARMY OF THE BAD ONES, THE NEW QUINCY while ICHIGO HAS STAYED ON THE SIDE OF THE SHINIGAMIS, so these two will FIGHT AGAINST EACH OTHER AT SOME POINT IN THE STORY!!!!
The new army of quincy have already did a raid against S.society and MANY OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS HAS DIED:
-Yamato, the capitaine comandant of the s.society, the director with his fire zanpakuto IS DEAD!!! killed by the army
-his lieutenant the one with brown eyes and white hair also!!!!
- Unohana capitaine of the 4th division, medical squad was KILLED BY ZARAKI KENPACHI in order for him to have his BANKAI
[YES finally ZARAKI KENPACHI HAS OBTAINED HIS BANKAI!!!! ]
- many others..... also died by the hands of the new quincys
The quincy has a weapon that is able to SEAL AWAY THE BANKAI OF A SHINIGAMI FOR EVER AND THEY CAN USE IT AGAINST THEM!!!!
the bankai that have been stolen by the quincy from the original owner are:
_ the bankai of RENJI
the bankai of SOI FON
the bankai of KUCHIKI BYAKUYA !!!! he also nearly died in a fight against the new quincy
many other bankai....

Anyway, Ichigo, the only one who can save S.Society due to his hybrid nature, has A WHOLE NEW ZANPAKUTO [ totally different from the former one, now he has 2 swords!!!] and is undergoing a very harsh TRAINING with the strongest person in s.society [they are new characters, they were never seen before!!!] He doesn't know as yet that Ichida has joined the new quincys army, and is now a bad guy [he will be very surprised ]

I hope that my SPOILER has given you the taste to READ THE SCANS!!! because I don't know if they'll ever start back the anime, you guys are missing a lot of things!!!!
