Police Arrest 'imported Voters' In Anambra by Youngzedd(m): 12:51am On Aug 26, 2013
More than 100 persons brought in from Lagos State; Jos, the Plateau State capital; and other parts of the country to register as voters in Anambra State in the ongoing voters revalidation exercise were on Sunday arrested and detained by the police in the state.

Also arrested were two members of the Independent National Electoral Commission ad hoc staff who were the registration and assistant registration officers for Unit 013, Ovala Square, Igbariam. They are National Youth Service Corps members recruited to register voters during the revalidation exercise.

The police also impounded two luxurious buses that were used to bring the arrested voters from Lagos and Jos for the exercise. INEC had last week disclosed that there w ere 93,000 fake voters in Anambra State.

The 'imported voters,' who were arrested at Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area said they had been mobilised and brought in to register by the Ifeanyi Ubah Fan Club, a political group made up of the supporters of Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, one of the governorship aspirants for the November 16 election in the state.

One of the detainees, Mr. Bonaventure Ofieli, who said he was a trader based in Jos, said the Ifeanyi Ubah Fan Club in Jos had provided them with the fund for their trip to Anambra State to register for the election. He said he hailed from Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Ubah is a governorship aspirant of the Labour Party. The party is due to hold its primaries on Wednesday in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

But the Director-General of the Ifeanyi Ubah Campaign Organisation, Chief Dan Ulasi, criticised the arrest of the voters, saying there was nothing wrong in mobilising registered voters to come home to vote.

He said the innocent citizens were being unnecessarily punished for offering to obey a national call to exercise their franchise.

He said the organisation might go to court to seek remedy for the detained persons.

The Chairman of Anambra East Local Government, Mr. Chinedu Obidigwe, said his attention had been drawn to the registration unit in front of the palace of the traditional ruler of Igbariam, Igwe N.N. Kelly by locals, who claimed to have noticed strange faces about to get registered.

He said on getting to the unit, he interviewed the strangers, who admitted that they were brought in to register as voters but that they were not residing in the area.

Well I guess the pertinent question here is, are they eligible to vote?

Do voters need to reside in the state they cast their vote, or is just being a registered voter in your home state enough to cast a vote?

I think the current rule is for peole to vote where they registered. So if they have already registered in their places of residence, then this will amount to double registration with INEC.

Hahaha 2014 is going to be a year to remember the poli tricks will go all out cheesy SHOWTIME!, Anyway I will come home to vote, I pay business tax and have a right to vote for whom I want. They never told me when I registered that it was against the law to vote where you don't live full time. Why did they impound the buses anyway that's not fair!

But there are bigger import of voters that the police are not talking about; the presidency, the PDP rigging machines and most likely the police themselves. How is it bad for an indigene of a state to travel back home and register as a voter. Police, take it easy now! We know were you all stand.

Well if that's the case, then we would have to question if they also registered as voters in the states they reside in. If they registered in both states, then that is unfortunate, and really not a good look for INEC; not being able to detect dual or multiple registrations by the same individual is this technological age is quite sad.

The Mr. Dan Ulasi seemed to be quite confident in his stance, I expected him to deny the allegations against his organization, so it seems he may believe that what he did was indeed in accordance with the law. Then again, some corrupt officials in Nigeria do wear their corruption brazenly in full glare of the public, with no fear of retribution by the citizens.

Guess we'll just have to see how this one plays out.

Lagos State

Oyo State

Osun State

Ogun State

Ondo State

Ekiti State

Edo State.

All these states had free and fair election. Now tell me why the so called remnant of jewish people cant have a decent free and fair election or are you guys allergic to civilization?

Why bring tribalism into the discussion, when we all know this is a "Nigeria" problem.

For as long as we remain a country, we should look after each other, likening our union to parts of the same body. When a part of your body, say your ankle, is not functioning properly, it affects the effectiveness of the whole body to some degree.

I want to believe that the so called tribalists here on Nairaland have alter egos they invoke when they come online, and are actually sweethearts in real life (Offline).

Just like Beyonce turns into Sasha Fierce when she gets on stage, so also is the same for the sweetheart Nairlander that logs online and becomes a Fierce Tribalist as soon as the log-in button is clicked.
