Surprise, surprise: Election of 30-year-old new PDP youth leader may be nullified



Only two days after his election, and a day after a The Scoop report mentioned how the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had turned a new leaf by electing 30-year-old Abdullahi Maibasari as its national youth leader, there are reports of behind-the-scene manoeuvres to oust him.

Abdullahi Hussaini Maibasari emerged as the new national youth leader of the PDP on Saturday after defeating Baba Wakili by 1547 votes to 421 votes. Before his election, Maibasari was the speaker of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, a position he was elected to just eight months ago.

His offence, according to sources who spoke with The Scoop, is that he rolls with the wrong crowd. Maibasari is an indigene of Niger state and is a nominee of the Niger state governor, Babangida Aliyu. In addition to being speaker of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, Maibasari was senior special assistant to Gov. Aliyu on Public-Private Partnerships.

Aliyu is one of the seven governors who staged a walkout during the PDP convention on Saturday, and who together with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, set up a rival PDP faction. His presence therefore on the PDP National Working Committee is already a source of apprehension for the party’s top hierarchy.

The first signs that Maibasari’s election might be nullified occurred during the convention on Saturday after the governors had already left the venue and had even announced the setting up of their rival faction. The chairman of the electoral committee at the special convention, Ken Nnamani, announced that the committee had received a petition against Maibasari. It was a curious announcement as Maibasari had been cleared by that same committee and no petition was raised at the time but suddenly it became such a big issue that it was announced after voting had already been concluded on Saturday.

It is believed that the announcement on Saturday is a prelude to eventual action against the new national youth leader. It’s unclear what the grounds for the petition against Maibasari are at this point.
