Here is also a perspective to consider:

The value of a product or service and consequently how much society will be willing to pay for it, is dependent on a combination of these three - demand, supply (& scarcity). In fact, the monetary value of a product has little or nothing to do with the intrinsic value/worth of that product/service. If the demand is high and the product/service is scarce, society will pay a higher premium for it. If it is abundant or supplied in great quantities, society will pay less for it.

Let me give an instance, Water is one of the most important substances on earth - no human can live for more than three days without water and in fact, scientist agree that life thrived on earth as opposed to other planets simply because of the availability of water. On the contrary, Gold can not be said to hold the key to humanity thriving. In fact, a man can live for 90 years or more without direct use or any contact with Gold. Yet, we pay more for an ounce of Gold compared to water.

The key is that though water is so important, it can be found in abundance in most part of the world, whereas Gold is very scarce making its supply limited and its demand 'apparently' high.

Back to sports men and other professions like Lawyers and Doctors. At any one time, there is only a handful of individuals who have been discovered and so trained to play as well as Messi. The implication is that out of 7 million humans on earth, there is only one Messi. Now think about it, one in seven million. That is monumental scarcity! Whereas, in almost every extended family, you will almost certainly find a Medical Doctor.

Again, also realize that not every footballer earn such super duper pay. There are footballers in professional football (even in England) who earn less than 500 pounds a week - See Ben Davies of Swansea but unfortunately only the big earners make the headline. Even if you type 'lowest paid footballer in EPL' into Google search, you will mostly find entries for 'highest paid footballers'

However, the question you raised is an important question. When you are making a career choice or thinking about making money. What should you expend your energy on. Think about demand, supply and scarcity

This is a very good topic. But you all should know that football is supported by diffrent brands,(nike, puma, adidas e.t.c).SO which brand is supporting the medical sector, even the pharmateucal companies aint making any thing. But still if u think the nurses and doctors deserve huge sum of amounts like the sportmen. Then you should be ready to buy a sachet of paracetamol that is 20buks for 2000buks as a start.I still wanna give a shout-out to all the medical practionals for a good job..

femiero: Your wage/salary is dependent on how the society values your services. Millions of people all over the world see football as an entertaining sport, thus there is a huge remunerations for the footballers. But don't let ASUU know footballers earn that much oo. They may never calloff the strike oo

Nah, they don't deserve it at all!

The people that really deserve such huge pay are the p.o rn actors and actresses.

These guys, if you'll agree with me, they touch more lives (positively or negatively depending on how you see it) as they provide a richer and more stimulating experience for so many people than footballers.

emmatok:

The host club,managers,taxes,e.t.c collects part of the money.

You will notice that clubs makes money
From transfers that is why they negotiate with buying clubs. e.g ARSENAL .

You refer to transfer and sign on fees. The matter under discussion is the wages that players earn each week not so?

People †ђA̶̲̥̅† are in the professional fields like the professors, engr aπϑ researcher are meant to earn more;itz js †ђA̶̲̥̅† their wage prolly is determined by political aπϑ hence economic policies unlike the football tins...if u observe, govt dnt pay players †ђA̶̲̥̅† much i tink....they earn †ђA̶̲̥̅† much frm clubs aπϑ so called endorsments....plus the researcher's aπϑ professors are meant to earn more if u ask me,cos frm their research comes alot of innovation, inventions aπϑ ways to runn a better aπϑ stabe society....research aπϑ inventions like hybrid crops, machines etc....buh guess such distingushed researchers aπϑ academicans are few as to compared to footballers aπϑ sports men....if such distingushed researchers are to be in clubs;they"ll obvisouly rule the world....so in order for the to earn more;they nid 2 organize a strategic way to make impact aπϑ create awareness of their relevance in the society...odawise the ignorant society wil kip payn n enjoyn football @ the expense of these people †ђA̶̲̥̅† really make life matter aπϑ comfortable

Re: Do Footballers And Sportmen Deserve Higher Wage by oladayo042: 8:39am On Sep 03, 2013
Footballers are paid their economic rent and supply is very far below demand. Simple economics!

If you sack Messi, can you get his equivalent that same day? The opposite is the case for nurses and firefighters.

If people are paid for saving lives, all of us will be doctors and nurses.

A debate like this will amply expose the employability of each discussant. Since no employer is obliged to employ a jerk. However, the beauty of any debate lies on the differed opinions about a matter. To infer that a professor sits in office portrays shallow reasoning. Could a professor be so iddle to sit in office without engagement? Furthermore, it is a common knowledge that mental exercise is tedious than physical exercise. Another person raised a point that footballers are restless and they deserve higher pay. What a childlike thinking! How would you describe soldiers who run from pillar to post in the name of defence? Can you account for the number of sodiers lost to Bokoharam insurgence? And how much do they pay soldiers? 70 percent of the world resources are being contolled by footballers and that is why you are looking for job
