About an hour ago, I got the most a tip in the mail saying that BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) would be available on Samsungs Galaxy range of smartphones on the 19th of September. Samsung’s and BlackBerry have already announced that BlackBerry messenger BBM would be part of the messaging hub on the Galaxy range soon, so besides the date, it really isn’t news. I tweeted it, but didn’t make much of it.

A few minutes later, another source let me know that MTN has sent an internal communication to its front-line staff telling them to brace up for customer inquiries following the availability of BBM Samsung Galaxy devices from the 19th. To be certain I have reached out to some contacts and can confirm that the news is indeed legit.

It is unclear if the app would be available on iTunes and Google Play as well on the said date. One source mentioned that the app may be a Samsung exclusive for 3 months but isn’t sure if that is just for Africa or Worldwide.


Update: The exclusive deal is really happening, Samsung just confirmed that to me via twitter.

It will be available for android and ios, even BBM has not confirmed the date. The information that was tweeted is: A. It will be available before the end of summer (approximately end of sept.) B. They submitted the app to apple over 2 weeks ago, apple is yet to approve it. Lets wait and see though, I can't wait to load BBM on my ios.

U can use bbm on ur android fones from 19th sept on etisalat network.

What is it with this BBM sef? I don't know why other options such as Googletalk, Windows Live Messenger, whatsapp etc, don't even get a second look for instant messages, even though this options are available on most OS on mobiles. I have a feeling this move by samsung is primarily intended to cut a larger share of the smartphone market in Africa.

How will we add contacts? Since samsung phones dont have BlackBerry pins...

I thought they said Samsung is better than BlackBerry, without knowing that BlackBerry still has a big edge over Samsung. I think Samsung users should tell they people offering them the messenger to change the name to SSM ( Samsung Messenger ) instead then I will know they are better than BB.
