What are the Civil Engineer Graduates doing in Nigeria. At the last count we have well over 250 Universities and Polytechnics in Nigeria, turning out Civil Engineer Graduates like confetti.

Yet we have Auschwitz(Auschwitz being the concentration camp where millions of jews died in 1945) type gutters scattered all over our cities, even in the creame de la creame areas of our cities, areas like VI, Ikoyi and probably Maitama(I hope Maitama does not fall into this category of penny wise pound foolish technology) in Abuja.

Yeah we used to have a lot of these till some people started stealing them to be melted to other things (you know who) . Metal covers are the best solution for Lagos roads.

So you are saying these same people will steal the covers and then complain of open gutter?

Na wa o! cheesy

Isn't it ironic that they come to Lagos with just nylon bags and steal bridge railings and steel drainage covers, melt them, sell them and return home in jeeps as heroes?

These same people claim to control the economy of the state when we know so well that the sectors they control don't affect the GDP figures one inch, maybe until kidnapping, armed robbery and fraud begin to listed as productive enterprise

And some people are saying we should let them be

They are the exact same thing.

No. Drains do exactly what they are called. They drain water (rain water) away and are not open/expose throughout the length of the road. You're also confusing drainage system to sewage system. Look up the difference.

What I see are people blaming the public for the open gutter syndrome. It's absolutely dumb to do this and merely encourages the govt to keep being negligent. This idea of showing a few pavements covered with metal grates is a joke. 99% of pavements/sidewalks in New York, London etc do NOT have those things. The pavements are simply made with concrete throughout (not with concrete 'slabs' that can be opened), and the water seeps in through tiny square side vents by the pavement like this:

........................................................

The actual gutter is built right alongside the adjoining kerb, so when there's a flow problem they simply open a vent, fix, and cover back.

Simple, clean, no need for constant ''maintenance'', and no risk of anyone dumping trash into anywhere.

Why can't we do this?

To all the die-hard Nigerian PATRIOTS, here is a simple English language lesson to tickle your grey matter.

An OPEN gutter or drain, such as is the case all over Nigeria, is by definition WITHOUT a cover of ANY sort, meaning that if you step into it, you are likely to fall and bust your phucking head open, or at least break your femur and most likely die from blood loss, because NONE of those "sympathizers" gathered in a throng to comment on your fate will raise a phucking finger to help you in any way.

A COVERED gutter or drain is COVERED with a metal grate, as in the pictures of New York streets that have been helpfully posted above by the Nigerian PARTIOTS. Step on such a grate while walking down the street, and you will notice that you do NOT fall and suffer major medical trauma that requires a visit to the emergency room, as would have certainly been the case if there were NO cover to make safe that gaping hole in the street.

Finally, an UNDERGROUND sewage or drainage tunnel is UNDERGROUND, and therefore INVISIBLE to people walking at street level. Walking along the street many feet above an UNDERGROUND sewage tunnel is PERFECTLY SAFE, since there is NO gaping hole in which to fall.

Now that the distiction between the words "COVERED" and "UNCOVERED" have been explained in layman's terms, we will try some math, covering fractions and decimals for the rest of today's session, if the PATRIOTS think they can comprehend such complexities.

On second thoughts, class dismissed.

Ahem!

One problem I have with the government is the issue of standardisation. There are certain things that the government has done that have made me very happy, but I don't understand why they do not replicate these same feats in subsequent projects.

There are streets with underground drainage in Lagos. A poster has already given an example - the upgrades done by Julius Berger in Central Lagos at the end of the Tinubu tenure. Those streets have underground drainage. This same method should have been used for all subsequent projects.

Similarly, the government ensured that there were provisions for underground service ducts when Awolowo Road was being reconstructed. This solved the terrible problem of people cutting the road when they want to lay water pipes. Why wasn't this extended to all subsequent road projects (Awolowo Road has not needed any major upgrade since 2003 because of this measure).

If you check the portion of Admiralty Road near the new Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, it also has underground gutters, but take a few steps further and you'll get to the old section which has open gutters.
Re: The Open Gutter Syndrome (Victoria Island Pictures) by naptu2: 2:09pm On Sep 18, 2013
If you check the streets around Tinubu Square, you'll not see any gutters, just those tiny drains that drain the water to the gutter below.

You sound like a mumu.

It is obvious that the gutters in Lagos are not covered. It has been explained repeatedly that the gutters in Lagos were built with covers, but that they have been stolen and not maintained.

Additionally, you were blatantly wrong when you said that open drainage exists only in "third world countries". The same exact drainage system exists all over the world. And your definitions of an open drainage system is horribly wrong. An open drainage system (gutter), is one that is exposed to air, it doesn't matter whether it is covered by a grate. You honestly need to do some research about the topic you are discussing before writing such flamboyant posts, because you have just made an a55 of yourself.

Now enjoy the celebration of the true PARTIOTS who will "like" your ignorant nonsense because it is anti-Lagos and anti-Yoruba.

Meanwhile, people who enjoy living in reality and dealing with facts will resume talking about this issue with less arrogance and factually incorrect noisemaking.

You are the one yarning dust. What the hell do you mean by "the gutters in Lagos were built with covers which were later stolen"? In those Kingston pics, do you see anything there that can be "stolen" by anyone? Is it not when you build substandard rubbish like slabs, instead of a proper sidewalk, that anyone can just lift and walk off with the stuff, and then you complain it was "stolen"?

That's more like it, though the pavement looks a bit narrow. You get the impression when you see sidewalks in Nigeria, that they were done merely to "nice up" the place, or as an afterthought, rather than as part of a conscious realisation that pedestrians have a right to a designated walkway. So you often see cars parked on them with no sanctions, or they're built too narrow etc. We need re-orientation. Like someone said, a national standard must be set, whereby any construction work that fails to meet it, must be rejected.

I'm going to illustrate what I mean by standardisation.

In this first set of pics you can see a street in Lekki Phase 1. It has an open gutter beside the pedestrian walkway. The gutter was never covered.

Kingston obviously uses a different system.

If we are talking about an open drainage system, then we must compare with other open drainage systems before we say that they ONLY exist in third world countries.

Can you steal the grates in NYC, YES!

Why?

Because they have an open drainage system like we do in Lagos. I have no idea what they do in Kingston, and don't really care.

If you think we should CHANGE to Kingston's system, that is different. But comparing the two is ridiculous and pointless.

3rd set. Sometimes the residents decide to clean the gutters. They remove the slabs and are too lazy or totally forget to replace them. Sometimes the slabs break when people carelessly remove them and bang them on the road.

What a load of crap. What Kingston is doing is no different from what the rest of the civilized world is doing. 99.9 percent of New York City's roads have covered drains, as in covered with full concrete - not slabs or grates - and with side vents placed on the actual roads for water to flow into the drains. Same as every other city in the US.

naptu2: Second set of pics. This is Admiralty Road in Lekki. There are concrete slabs covering the gutter.

Another thing that we need is statewide waterworks. No one is running anything resembling a modern underground sewer system without an electrically powered, pressurized, water system.

For that we need power and a LOT of money. Fashola is building waterworks now that are powered by independent power projects, but I don't think he has started building the pipe system.

I think the recent water project brings the total to 100 million gallons a day or something like that?

Last set of pics: the section of Admiralty Road that was recently redone by Julius Berger (the section close to the bridge).

There's no open gutter. When I was a kid I often wondered how the underground gutters in some parts of Lagos were kept clean (since people wouldn't have access to them). The answer - manhole.

Rain water is drained from the road via those little ducts at the side of the kerb. At Tinubu those ducts are rectangular and are shielded by metal grates to prevent rubbish getting into the gutter.

True.. I saw a pic once of one of Tokyo's main underground sewers. It actually had Airconditioner in it.

Now that's what we're talking about. Any road built in Nigeria without this must be summarily rejected. They can do without the black and white kerb decoration...not necessary.
Re: The Open Gutter Syndrome (Victoria Island Pictures) by naptu2: 2:59pm On Sep 18, 2013
So the question is, why can't we have the same design. These pictures were taken just a few metres away from each other.

I'd like to see a system in which all gutters look like the gutter in the last set of pictures. Yet some roads are being built at the moment with the same design that we have in the first set of pics.

Even zimbabweans thinks that nigerian town planning is primitive compared to theirs and i hardly dispute them.

The foundation lies in its drainage system and pavements. No edifice,no matter the amount spent on it will be beautiful in surroundings that looks like piggery.

These gutters are very unsightly. I have always wondered why top class infrastructure has not been given the the likes of VI and Ikoyi as well as Lekki given that the Property values in these areas are humungous, probably some of the most expensive on the globe.

Many states are beginning to adopt the closed drainage policy. At least I know of Akwa Ibom and Benin City. All the new roads being built are now with covered drainage and side walks.

BENIN

But VI is really a mess for a CBD with the value of land amongst the most expensive in the world.
