Nigeria is a land of religious extreemist, especially the pentecostal followers. People make first class in proper universities all over the world without attributing it to any supernatural force. But this is Nigeria, where things other countries take for granted are called breakthrough, spiritual favours etc. Religion and pastors have really messed this country up.

I think few hours of quality study everyday is a good starth, though there's no silver bullet for everybody.

To achieve a first class degree, be very devout in religion. This is the first thing (Non Deus, in vanum laboraverunt).
Second, be determined. Determination and focus is what separates first class students from others, not intelligence.
Lastly, what easier way is there to achieve something than to copy those who have already achieved it? Be friends with people who have already made a first class degree or people who are on first class GPAs (and people who are working towards the same distinction goal as you are) and it naturally rubs off on you. You act like them subconciously.
