Nigeria Government felt that she needed to change to left hand drive to further illustrate her independence from the British. |

echibuzor: As much as I have tried to think about the motive behind the change, I am coming up short..... But maybe its because of the fact that maybe we import tokunbo cars mostly from America then and America cars are lefties so.... Really? There was widespread importation of cars into Nigeria from North America back in 1972? |

In the early seventies ( 1972 I think) when the change occurred uniformity was being encouraged world wide. More countries were driving on the right hand side of the road except countries with British colonial background. Nigeria was ( and is) surrounded by countries with French colonial history who had always been driving on the right. ( Benin republic, Cameroon, Niger and chad) their drivers use our Nigerian ports and our drivers delivered goods to those countries with much confusion. It made much sense to make that change. America and Britain are simply proud and feel important so they refuse to change from their imperial systems. It is the same with metric system; only in America and UK do you hear of awkward measurements in miles, pounds ,stones , ounces and inches. 10 Likes 1 Share |

Most countries who share the same border use the same system. I think we also wanted to show our independence. |

This was the case in all of Nigeria's neighbours. So, if you wanted to drive from Lagos to Lome, you had to learn to drive on the opposite side of the road. Changing to LHD simply made things easier and meant that we drove on the same side of the road as most other countries. 2) The only reason why we used RHD cars and drove on the left was because we were colonised by the United Kingdom. Well, most African countries wanted to show that they could make their own decisions and did not have to conform with whatever their former colonial masters did. Nigeria was no exception. So the government decided to go with the system that's used by most countries in the world, rather than the system that's used by its former colonial master. 8 Likes |

The old Carter Bridge. You can see that we also drove on the left side of the road (LHT) before 1972. If you wanted to drive to Benin Republic or Togo, you had to learn to drive on the other side of the road. Today the traffic flow is reversed.
