Pls guys, want to know your opinion. Can a employer reject an employee's resignation letter.
If possible, on what grounds? Thanks
Re: Can Resignation Letter(s) Be Rejected by DarryOsh(m): 10:24am On Sep 27, 2013
yeah, i suppose it can be rejected if u are bonded to your employer(i.e there is a prior official agreement that you cannot leave during a specified period of time)

If u have taken that step in a rush by tendering ur resignation and expecting them to reject it, then ur way far cos they'r a gonna accept it like it is a birthday gift. If u ar about to do that, i advice ; 'don't'. If they ar gonna reject ur resig letter, it means u are instrumental to organisation or perhaps, they'r enjoying some 'cheap labour' frm you and this is rare occurence. They wont even reject it knowing how many graduates ar out there longing for dat job.

Legally...no

Not even a bond can force you to work for someone.

It is against labour laws. The worst any bond can do is to make you pay some sort of compensation to your employer...

A guy had a brawl with my boss, next day he resigned and it was rejected.

Very well if you are not a slave.

I rejected the unaccepted letter I wrote and insisted I have resigned and demanded my benefits.

though the benefit was useless.

No, we re done with the slave era a long time ago.
But again answer could be yes. A boss can reject the resignation letter of a modern slave. cheesy

The more reason u most read terms and conditions...if the terms and contition have some resignation clause in it and u have agreed without reading...your resignation might be rejected...so its verry possible
Re: Can Resignation Letter(s) Be Rejected by djojo(m): 4:30pm On Sep 27, 2013
it can be rejected base on the below mention
1, if an employee is under investigation, maybe on fraudulent charges
2, if there is lay down agreement between the two team (employee and the employer) when recruiting,
3, if the employee have values or is a guruu on the aspect he manage, the employer will reject his resignature

But if you are working under a well documented contract,
the resignation letter may be rejected according to the term of contract
Re: Can Resignation Letter(s) Be Rejected by rodeo0070(m): 4:31pm On Sep 27, 2013
In certain cases, however, an employee who tenders a resignation may encounter an employer who has legal and contractual rights to refuse the employee's resignation.

Investigation:

It can be refused if there is an on-going investigation within the establishment, in which he/she in directly or indirectly involved. Say, fraud, theft, murder, sexual harassment etc

Employment-At-Will

Most private-sector employers
follow the employment-at-will
doctrine, which means the employee can end the working relationship at any time he wants to quit working, for any reason, with or without notice. The doctrine provides for an employee to decide when and how to end the relationship, although there are a few exceptions. Under the
employment-at-will doctrine, an
employer has little choice but to
accept the employee's right to end
the employment relationship.

Employment Contract

Employees who are subject to the
terms of an employment contract
may not be able to simply terminate
the working relationship. In these
cases, an employer would likely
refuse to accept the resignation and remind the employee of the terms and conditions of the employment contract. Like the employer, employees are bound by the conditions of a contract, which
usually means they should tender
written notice to terminate the
agreement. Most contracts have
clauses that permit immediate
termination of the agreement,
however. In the event the employer
doesn't live up to the terms of the
agreement, such as refusal to pay
the employee, the employee may
have justification for tendering her resignation.

Retention Bonus

If an employee has agreed to a
retention bonus or any other
agreement to stay with the company for a specified period, the employer may have the right to enforce that agreement and thereby refuse to accept the employee's resignation. For example, if an employee received a retention bonus and agreed to stay with the company for two years in exchange for a cash bonus paid in a lump sum, it could be difficult to tender a resignation one year after payment of the retention bonus. In addition to violating the terms of the agreement, the employee's decision to resign may appear unethical as well.

Sign-on Bonus

Similar to retention bonuses, sign-on bonuses generally are paid upon the employee's agreement to remain employed for a certain period. Sign-on bonuses -- like retention bonuses-- should be paid incrementally to avoid potential disagreements about whether the employee actually can resign.

Considerations

If an employee wants to resign from his job, there must be a reason why he's made the decision to quit.
Employers who refuse to accept an
employee's resignation risk ruining
the employer-employee relationship.
By refusing to accept an employee's resignation, the employee may be resentful and eventually become difficult to work with. Without a contractual obligation to continue the working relationship, employers who
respect the wishes of employees
who want to resign usually are
employers who realize an unhappy
employee can affect the entire
workforce.

Yes he can but not in this case. What led to the brawl was that he clearly violated some specific company rules concerning contract award to sub-contractors.
Re: Can Resignation Letter(s) Be Rejected by bluejeff(m): 4:35pm On Sep 27, 2013
Truth is they can if one does not meet the terms of agreement in the contract. E.g Some organisations will state that before you resign you notify them 1-3 months before the date of resignation.

Go access bank, u go sabi say dem go reject ya resignation..(BOND-age tins)

Also, if u r indebted to dem, its natural for ur letter 2 b rejected.
Re: Can Resignation Letter(s) Be Rejected by Nobody: 4:54pm On Sep 27, 2013
Under the following circumstances, your resignation letter can be rejected:

1. Dropping the bomb without giving required notice as per appointment letter.
2. Dropping the atomic weapon without proper handover notes.
3. Dropping your letter when you have already received a termination letter.
4. Dropping your letter when it is not properly addressed to Personnel or HR manager
5. Dropping the letter when you are under investigation for violations or maybe fraud, even amorous relationship in the company.
6 Dropping the letter when your line manager is had not approved the request.

Well here are my two cents!

But by the way, do you already have another job at hand; the market is saturated with 'hopeful prospects', waiting to take over the present one you are doing.
