The English Premier League has produced some of the most exciting players in European soccer in recent times. Soccer Report harbors an intense jealousy for Gareth Bale, now the world’s most expensive soccer player in history after his move to Real Madrid.
Over the last two seasons, Luis Suárez, Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Yaya Touré and Marouane Fellaini have been among the league’s outstanding performers, along with the recently departed Bale.
The new crop of promising young players includes the likes of Cardiff City’s Kim Bo Kyung, who has the touch and vision of Shinji Kagawa; Southampton’s Rickie Lambert with his unerring left-footed finishes; Michu of Swansea City, and so many more.
SR gathered around the water cooler and consulted our crystal ball, and we now give you our list of the top five players who could just be the next big thing in the EPL.
5. Christian Benteke
A monstrous striker blessed with a great first touch, good technique, pace, power and great goal scoring ability. At just 22 he bagged an impressive 23 goals in 38 league games for Aston Villa last season and although Villa managed to tie their star man down to a new five-year deal in June, another season like that would surely see him leave for a club in the Champions League.
4. Daniel Sturridge
Reminiscent of Dwight Yorke or Robbie Fowler in many ways, Daniel Sturridge has been given a new lease on life under Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool. Having gone from a promising young player at Manchester City to a frustrated benchwarmer at Chelsea, Sturridge is now showing signs of becoming a truly world-class center-forward. His technique, first touch, movement and dribbling skills are a joy to watch and his promising new partnership with Luis Suárez definitely make him one to watch this season.
3. Philippe Coutinho
Another fantastic signing by Brendan Rodgers, Coutinho arrived on the cheap from Inter Milan in January. The 21-year old produced some great performances for Liverpool towards the end of last season, providing seven assists in just 13 games. Perhaps the best example of the natural Brazilian flair-player in the EPL along with Chelsea’s Oscar, he is at the heart of Liverpool’s inventive play. If he can improve his goal-scoring ability, having netted just three in 19 games, he will without a doubt be big star in world soccer for years to come.
2. Oscar
Blessed with vision and movement reminiscent of a young Kaka, and even the boyish good looks of a member of One Direction, Oscar has all it takes to be the next big star in the Premier League. The Brazilian saw his first-team opportunities limited last season with stiff competition for a starting place at Chelsea. But with Jose Mourinho openly stating in a recent press conference, “…In this moment, Oscar is my number 10,” SR likes to believe he is a guaranteed starter for the Blues this season. A dynamic playmaker with a real eye for a pass, he’s constantly thinking, and never stops probing the opposition defense. With just three goals in 39 games however, he’ll need to first improve his finishing in order to become the EPL’s next big star.
1. Aaron Ramsey
Suffering a career-threatening injury a few seasons ago, the Welshman has never quite looked the same promising young player he did when he first joined Arsenal in 2008. He struggled to get into Arsene Wenger’s starting XI for several years, finally rediscovering his best form towards the end of last season while producing some great performances. Having finally overcome the curious “Ramsey goal curse” – which saw a the passing of a celebrity every time he scored – he has become a permanent feature in Arsenal’s starting XI, and already has seven goals in eight games this season. An attacking midfielder who at 22 is remarkable in providing Arsenal with the cutting edge in midfield that they have missed since the departure of Cesc Fàbregas, Ramsey looks set for a great year in the EPL.
