There are indications that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Tambuwal is under pressure to resign following his tacit support for the rebel New PDP members in the House and his inability to stem the growing acrimony in the PDP caucus.

Nigerian Pilot gathered that the plot to unseat Tambuwal thickened last week Wednesday when majority PDP members in the House loyal to the national chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur held a secret meeting in Abuja.

Among the long list of Tambuwal’s alleged sins Nigerian Pilot’s findings revealed include; “disloyalty to party decisions, insubordination to party authority, anti-party activities, actions likely to derail the integrity of the House and the country’s democracy and rudderless leadership.”

A source close to aggrieved members added thus, “we are of the view that the leadership; that is Tambuwal’s deputy, Ihedioha, the majority leader and the rest we know, reason, think and do things the way Tambuwal does. Hence, they must also go with him.”

Speaker Tambuwal and the 57 “New PDP” members in the House were said to have gotten wind of the meeting, which prompted the House to quickly adjourn sittings till October 22 to give the Tambuwal loyalists apple time to strategize on how to counter the move to impeach the Speaker.

Though the leadership of the House claimed they were adjourning for the forthcoming Muslim Salah celebration and the lesser Hajj, Nigerian Pilot gathered from authoritative sources that the reason adduced for the sudden adjournment is to allow tension die down and same time give Tambuwal loyalists enough time to lobby members of the House elected on the platform of the opposition parties.

Since the split in PDP on August 31, 57 out of 208 PDP members in the House of Representatives, in obedience to the demands of their governors in the Baraje camp, declared support for the splinter group, leading to tension and mutual suspicion among PDP members in the House.

Following the split in the rank of PDP members, the 57 “New PDP” have been banking on all the opposition lawmakers to rally to their side in an event there is an attempt to sack Tambuwal.

Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon Zakari Mohammed, who is also a member of the “New PDP”, had at a pre-resumption news conference in Abuja on September 13 given an insight into the thinking among Tambuwal supporters when he declared that members of the “New PDP” will team up with the opposition elements in the house and invariable turn the old PDP into minority party in the house.

He said the PDP has 208 out of the 360 members of the House, while the All Progressives Congress controls 137 members.

“It is likely that the ‘rebellious’ new PDP members will team up with the APC members to decide major issues in the House. There are 137 APC members who may choose to team up with the 57 PDP rebels and become the majority in the House. So, who is the minority now?” he asked.

However, it was gathered that the strategy to rely on opposition lawmakers to save Tambuwal appears to have backfired as majority of the opposition lawmakers, who played critical role in the election of Tambuwal as speaker have opted not to join the fray which they perceived as pure internal affairs of PDP.

The opposition lawmakers position to stay neutral in the PDP crisis is said to have unsettled Tambuwal’s camp and the speaker is said to be under pressure to throw in the towel instead of facing possible impeachment when the house resumes on October 22.

Out of the 360 Honourable Members, the number of Members to elect or impeach must be up to 2:3 which is 240

looking at the maths it is still not likely he could be impeached easily, because the numbers still don't tally for an out right impeachment. You take the 57 rebel PDP house members and 137 APC members on the fence. what do you have from a total of 360 members left. You get 199 instead of the required 240 for impeachment. That is a wide margin of 41 members. Not forgetting that of the 199 members,15 come from opposition parties outside APC.
Me thinks the nPDP move is more to re-enforcing or consolidating to avoid surprises.Except in this fracas, APC sides with any of the sides. It is a stalemate.

that's why i said it's not practically possible to impeach the speaker, so whether they like it or not he must stay till 2015

yes just putting it clearly and stating the likely scenario that has made it a stalemate.I am not disputing your position at all.Just supporting your 2:3 and further showing the slim chance of even making that happen.

True Talk, the fact that he supports nPDP doesn't disqualify him from being the Speaker, so they'd only try to impeach him, but it's not practically Possible for that to happen in Nigeria yet

Tambuwal wants to bite d fingers that feeds him.
@d possibility of his impeachment;Apperently in my view he can ousted out. How?If Out of 360 house members,158 pro Tukur/Gej led PDP +15LP/APGA (90% of this lot should be pro GEJ which makes them anti Tambuwal).Among the 137 APC members,me thinks some might not be too comfortable with Tambuwal,so vote against him.Again when the chips are down, the npdp claim of 58 members might just turn out to be a fiction.

Funny how all the comments here are laced with sentiments. Why has the Republican controlled US of A congress decided to occassion a shutdown of the Obama government if not politics?
Why is Tambuwal,a PDP rep member and speaker by virtue of his membership of the PDP ,looking up to APC members to save him from his party? Is he a member of the APC?
This is a PDP government and they need to be in full control to carry out their manifesto. If the legislator does not complement the executive, it would not be an easy ride.
Tambuwal has been a mole within the PDP and it is high time he is shoved aside for the serious business of transformation to gather steam. No more to politicking, horse-trading and sabotaging of governments efforts by 'enemies within'.
The best thing for him is to decamp to the APC with his position,if he can garner enough support base. He has already made a mistake cos PDP members win elections on the strenght of their parties and would run back to it during election.

Most of you here dont know anything about Nigerian politics. That there are 360 members does not mean all the members have to be present to impeach the speaker. There has never been a time when all the members were present in the house except maybe at the inauguration. The key factors that determine impeachment are resources and politicking. Those who support Tambuwal do not necessarily love him. People just align themselves to wherever they think suits them most. The moment they begin to loose confidence in Tambuwal not being able to serve their interest, they will dump him. He will be dealt with at the right time. The only reason he is still there is because GEJ is a gentle man. If the president really wants him out, he will be thrown out and even the opposition reps will join to impeach him.

How i wish i was in your location i would have given u a bottle of wine.So many peeps here on NL just wake up to make nasty and baseless assumption all in the name of sentimental politics. They should ask themselves how the influential "Oyi of Oyi" Chief Chuba Okadigbo was booted out as the Senate President with all the popularity and charisma he had in the Hallowed chamber. In matter of the National Assembly what matters is the level of financial lobby to the Legislators and not a mere love or party support of the Speaker. Why should an APC member just wake up and decides that he will surely support the Speaker when he or she is lobbied by the Speaker's team? What those men consider first is the amount of cash throwned to them cause they have nothing to lose if Tambuwal is impeached. Some of the members don't even like him cause they were not favoured in committee sharing therefore they still have grudge against Mr Speaker. This might be the right time for them to pay him back.

Tanbuwal is not an APC member, so he can't count on them to save him. People cross and decamp in politics if their interest are not being served. What is he still doing in PDP, cos that is the only reason he is a speaker today. you all that think he can't be impeached must be joking. He is not serving the interest of us Nigerians cos he is constantly opposing the transformation agenda of mr president. Its even better to have any opposition member as speaker than having a PDP turning against his own
