President  Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday said despite his desire to transform the country, his government could not perform magic in an atmosphere of violence.

He said economic development could not be achieved in a nation devoid of peace.

Jonathan spoke shortly after he was conferred with the 2013 Africa Peace Award of the United Religions Initiatives at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President also said for the country to witness economic development, there must be internal democracy and stability.

“There is no way a government can perform magic when people are shooting gun. shocked There cannot be economic development without peace. For you to develop economically there must be peace and political stability.  Government creates conducive environment for private sector to thrive and create jobs,” he said.

He also stressed the need for African leaders to continue to govern their countries in the right way.

While dedicating the award to Nigerians, who he said gave him the opportunity to serve, Jonathan called on Nigerians especially youths to give peace a chance.

Jonathan said he and his government were fully committed to a peaceful world.

He said, “Even when countries are fighting, at the end of the day, they will still come to the dialogue table to resolve their differences. They have hardly solve crisis through the barrel of the gun, even if you had the most sophisticated  weapon to fight, they will still come to negotiate otherwise you can never live in peace.

“So, let me call on all Nigerians especially the young people, if you come to the southern part of this country you hear about militancy, kidnapping and if you go to the North you have this issue of Boko Haram.

“For us to develop our country, we must all embrace peace.”

He promised to continue to work to foster peace in spite of the challenges facing the country.

The Regional Director of URI, Ambassador Mussie Hailu, said the award was in recognition of Jonathan’s contributions to religious harmony in Nigeria  and peace keeping operations under the United Nations.

He said, “We have been following with great interest the great role the President play in his country, West Africa and Africa as a whole since he assumed office as President of Nigeria.

“We commend his leadership qualities in the West African sub-region in particular as  ECOWAS Chairman and also lauded the current transformation agenda of his administration.”

At least the President has admitted that he can't perform magic because there's no peace in the country.

Well, he should remember that all the problems were present before he became the President and he did promise to solve them.

He should also be told that effective governance is the solution to the problems he identified - militancy, kidnapping and Boko Haram. It is not the absence of those problems that will make him govern effectively. Or what did he achieve in Bayelsa where there was no violence?

If his expectation is that those identified problems must disappear first before he can govern well then he can as well throw in the towel.

Again, he can't perform magic in terms of governance because of problems but he's performing magic in terms of spending? Has his budgetary expenses reduced because he's not been able to deliver? How come the violence didn't stop him from travelling with several aides to Israel and other countries?

Is it violence and kidnapping that has made him unable to fight corruption? Why are the problems facing Nigeria getting worse? People sell kids, sell human parts and do all sorts of outrageous things to make money.

On another note, the President should pay more attention to the way he talks. What's 'shooting gun'? The part where he called on the youths is also disjointed.

Jonathan is such a dishonest and amoral individual. I am thoroughly ashamed he is my President in this day and age when the African nations we Nigerians love to look down upon are now parading individuals who know how to think, act, talk and deliver solutions.

This is the President who sets up many, many "fact-finding" committees daily and expensively only to then become the same individual undermining them and totally ignoring the solutions they offer borne of painstaking research and effort. That alone is enough to show serious-minded Nigerians that this man is not here to provide solutions. He is just another corrupt gradualist, like many others Nigeria has been cursed with, happy to offer platitudes and rhetoric till his own looting 'turn' is over.

Mr. President!
Did you enforce the creation of police posts in all nooks and crannies of the federation and the shooting continues?

Were there ubiquitous CCTV cams in all strategic positions in the country and they failed to pull some videos of shooters or criminals off em and it didn't work?

Did you make provisions for emergency numbers nationally and people didn't call to give intels and in times of trouble/emergency?

Apart from ministries and parastatals, did you create jobs by setting up industries and crime rate was still on the increase?

How can you be eating 4billion naira food in a year and expect starving tummies to be law abiding?

Did you deliver your promises on the subsidy re-investment programme and the shooting continues?

According to plan, the entry-ports and other purpose for dredging the river Niger should be in work by now, did you deliver on that and unemployment was still on the increase the shooting did no reduce?

You better rearrange your philosophies and do something.

agbameta: This is what you get when clowns run for office but have zero undersstanding regarding their duties and job description.

In his dumb and clueless world, he's not the president and he can not perform or act like one.

Balarabe Musa said it well when he noted that, in serious Nations, there is a standard no one should be allowed to go below in consideration to who occupies the position of President/head of State. Aberrant Nigeria not only has to be different, in regards to what Musa said, but she must also host ethnocentric and clannish characters totally blind to what amounts to simple issues of supporting what is right and denouncing what is wrong.

Do some people even open their eyes to the many proffered solutions, capable of transforming Nigeria radically, Jonathan rejects outright? Yet they will rush to clannishly celebrate his mundane and facetious effort as if there is one single leader in the world who does not have one good thing to his name. I am sick of Nigeria. Let us all clamour for regionalism so that some, when in full control of their region, can bypass the likes of Donald Duke and Utomi to make GEJ and Uduaghan their Prime Minister.

But magic can be performed on the national treasury? Interesting.
Nigerians are not asking for magic, all every one wants is improvement coupled with transparency and honesty.

This man is a joke, the most clueless president in the world. Statements like these, should never proceed out of the mouth of a country's leader, Never!!!

You can't perform magic by stopping violence, but you can perform the magic of spending a billion naira on food, you can perform the magic of allowing known thieves walk free because of tribal sentiments.

That man needs to be thrown out of office at all cost, I never thought this day would come, but I have to say, I preferred OBJ.

There is no way there will be peace if our leaders keep looting every kobo in the treasury and nothing is being done to salvage the situation and help the masses who lives in abject poverty. I think Mr. President knows this too.
