A brother posted several hadith that the holy prophet (saws) entered Madina and saw Jews fasting on the day(10th) of Ashura. Upon asking the jew why they fast, they replied him (saws) because God rescued Moses on that day: whereupon he said: Musa is dearer to me than you do" Then he (saws) also fasted and asked all his companions to do so. He however promised to fast on the 9th and 10th of the following year of the same month to distinguish Muslim from the Jew who only fasted on the 10th. But the prophet died the following year.

www.nairaland.com/1511261/ashura-important-day-all-muslims

So this friend enjoyed all muslims to fast.

MY COMMENT (QUE) TO THE POST:

Salam alaykum dear brother/sister,

According to the hadith you posted, the holy prophet(saws) entered madina and saw the jews fasting...then he promised to fast 9th and 10th the following year as against the 10th he fasted that present year he saw the Jew, but died.

Can you explain what the hadith meant by
"...arrived in Madinah and found the Jews observing fast on the day of ‘Ashura…"?

It is well known that he arrived Madina in the 1st year of Hijra. If this is true, then the hadith is concocted to say he (saws) died the following year.
The holy prophet (saws) died in the 10th year of Hijra.

2ndly, if the hadith meant 9th year perhaps
probably after returning from an expenditure, then I'd like to ask you dear brother what took the holy prophet so long till 9th year he was in Madina before knowing the Jew used to fast on the day of Ashura?

And I'd like to also ask which jewish clan/tribe remained in Madina in the 9th year of Hijrah to tell our blessed prophet it was the day God saved Musa from Fir'aun?

For your information, the only Jewish tribe left was conquered as far back as 7th year of Hijra at the conquest of Khaybar!

3rdly, if truly the fasting on the day of Hijrah is so important for the holy prophet (saws) and his ummah, then it is only reasonable his Lord commanded him rather than a jew telling him."Nor does he speaks of his own accord. It is an inspiration revealed to him..."~Sura Najm.

"It is He who has sent the prophet with the guidance and the religion of truth to be PREVAIL OVER ALL DEEN..." ~sura saff.

NB: I deliberately used the arabic word "deen" which is far beyond 'religion'. It encomprises all aspect of life, practices and spiritual rites.

So how will the holy prophet sent with a perfect religion and guidance followed the practice of the Jew claimed to be Nabi Musa's practice?

Besides, The month in which God delivered the Israelite from pharaoh was Abib (coincided with Rajab)- Deut.16 v 1.) So how could the Jew transfer an event of Abib (Rajab) to Tishri I (muharram) in open defiance of their Torah?

I look forward to your responses before I proceed further on the topic.

Thanks a lot for your time.

Salam.

Salam Al-Baqir. I too am puzzled with this hadith. The first time i saw the hadith, i was like "Seriously? The prophet could just command muslims to fast without any revealation from God to do so?"
Another thing again is that Aisha narrated that even the Quraysh tribe used to fast on tenth muharram during the pre islamic period of ignorance. So it look like it wasn't even the Prophet that introduced 10th Muharram as a day for special fasting as sunnis believe.
Re: Why Fasting On The Day Of Ashura? I Need Answers Pls! by usermane(m): 9:01pm On Nov 11, 2013
Sahih Bukhari
Book 31; Fasting
3116
Narrated by ibn umar: The prophet fasted and ordered muslims to fast on tenth muharam but when fasting of Ramadan was prescribed, the fasting of ashura was ABANDONED. Abdullah did not use to fast on that day unless it coincided with his routine fasting by chance.

According to this hadiths, fasting on ashura day was not made optional after Ramadan fasting was prescribed. It was abandoned totally and became no different from fasting on any other day.
The above hadith goes in contradiction to sunni common narrations that enjoin worshippers to fast on ashura day for huge reward. But despite these contradiction in the hadiths book, one is left wondering why the sunnis turn a blind eye and carry on with the fasting.

Please we are not here to ridicle or mock anyone 's belief. We are just trying to ascertain the truth here. We feel that everyone is entitled to the truth,as knowing the truth shall set us free. The truth is the best gift u could get from anyone. It just so happens that sometimes we end up hurting people 's feelings on our quest for the truth, but then again there is no gain without pain.
Please if you have a better arguement in support of Ashura day fasting, let us know and if you have a problem with it,share with us.

I also stumbled upon upon these hadiths that left me guessing what traditional Islam is all about. Pls check these hadiths out. I mean, the Qur'an reccomended only fasting in Ramadan(Qur'an 2:183-187). Any other fasting(Qur'an 2:196, 4:92, 5:89;95 58:4) is for correcting mistake in acts of worship or atoning for one 's sin. According to traditional muslims, however, the Prophet did specify special days not mentioned in Qur'an for fasting. Could this still be true in the light of the hadith below?

Sahih Bukhari
Book 31: Fasting
3.208
Narrated Alqama
I asked Aisha "did Allah 's Apostle use to choose some special days(for fasting)?" she replied , "no,but he used to be regular(constant)(in his service of worshipping). Who amongst you can endure what Allah 's apostle use to endure?"

"He didnt choose Special days for fasting?" what happened to fasting 10th muharram, mondays and thursdays,13th-15th of every month, arafat day, 6 days of shawwal e.t.c?

To top it,in the same sahih book, book 76( Ar Riqaq, 8.473), the same narrator mentioned that the Prophet did not do extra deeds of worship(salat, fasting, animal sacrifice e.t.c), on special days.

PIs, is there something am missing here?

Salam dear sister,
Sorry gannn if you are hurt. "Truth is better" and the holy prophet (saws) has enjoyed us to say it even if our destruction lie within. If I can open 100 thread on Ashura, by Allah I will.

The first thing Allah gave human being was "Aql" (intellect). Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (a.s) said even if Allah did not send prophet to mankind, his aql would have been used against him on the day of Judgment. Somebody else's knowledge starts where your own ends.

Fasting on the day of Ashura with the belief that its a Sunnah of the prophet on the platform that a JEW for that matter directed him is A MYTH and not reality. In fact its a LIE. Only Allah command and direct Muhammad al-Amin (saws)!

If you fast, Allah will reward or reject you (your acts) according to your intention.

Dear sister, the rate at which the agents of Banu Umayyad continue editing books of hadiths and many valuable books is alarming. I am fond of buying and collecting books, both Old and new editions. Abdullah Yusuf Ali English translation has been edited where many information erased. Tafsir Ibn kathir do not escape from editing. Sahih al-Tirmidhi is not left out. And so on.
And this evil people deliberately do this in order to establish and justify their so-called beliefs.

During the time of Mu'awiyah Ibn Abi sufy'an as the "Sultan(khalifa)" of the time, he hired many hypocrites among the companions of the prophet (saws) (do not raise eye-brow sister, there were many Munafiq among the sahaba -some known and some hidden to the prophet, read Sura al-Tawba and sura Munafiq and several other verses of the holy Qur'an). Mu'awiyah hired them in which they continue fabricating hadiths upon hadith. When he died, his evil son, Yazid continued in his shoes and after the killing of Imam Hussain (a.s), they manage to fabricate several hadith to hide their heinous crime of killing the grandson of their prophet. Among such hadith were hadith on fasting on Ashura.

Have you ever ask yourself what you know about Hussain? In fact many thought he was a twin with Hassan who died at infant. What about her whom the prophet described as "Leader of ALL women past, present and future times", sayyida Fatima (a.s)? Personalities who if you fail to salute and pray for in your salat at every obligatory salat, your salat is void. They deliberately erased them from our memory and substitute them with those...they elevated.

"O ahl al-bayt of the prophet! Your LOVE has been made obligatory in the holy Qur'an...it is enough among your many exalted virtues that if anybody prays without sending blessing on you, his prayer is void" ~Imam Shafi'i (R) commenting on the holy verse:

"Say (O Muhammad)! I do not ask of any reward from you except for the love of my nearest kindred"

No wonder why the holy prophet exclaimed 3 times in the hadith where he said he has left two weighty things for us in "the book of God and his ahl al-bayt"; he concluded saying:

"I warn you concerning my ahl al-bayt" (3times he said).

Today many have been brainwashed to the extent that if you raised objection against sahih al-Bukhari, they will nearly crucify you as if sahih Bukhari is infallible. Such is the act of the Nasibi.

Thanks for your time. May Allah guide us to the right path.

Dear brother, wa alaykum salam

I saw, read and digested all your comments. In fact you have beaten me to those hadith because I intend to use them in the thread I linked people with in this main OP, had it been the writer or any other reply my questions.

You have said it all. I am not a blind follower for Allah has given us intellect and enjoyed us to search for the truth (knowledge). Islam is not a religion of dogmatism.

If Qur'an can ask the world's intellectuals to research and scrutinize it if it comes from any other being except Allah, discrepancies would have been revealed in it. If Qur'an can open challenge like that, what about books of hadith written by al-Bukhari, Muslim, Kulayni, Muhfid etc?

Fasting on the day of Ashura on the platform that a JEW directed the holy prophet to do so is a myth, a lie with no basis. How many lies have they concocted upon the personality of the holy prophet (saws)!

You know I was brought up reading Encyclopedia and I have enough collections on my shelves! Lol.

"... be ur believe and to me be mine" (your words)!
Honestly that doesn't bother me at all because how many practices have been changed by the sunni ulama because they want to be different from "the Shi'a"! It is just disheartened when you cannot defend your beliefs and what you stand for. Islam ain't
no dogmatic religion.

Just because Shi'a commemorate the martyrdom of the 'blood' of your prophet (saws) with sober, crying, recitation of eulogy etc; then you wanna be difft thereby, you adopt fasting prescribed by the JEW to your prophet (nauthubillah)!

In the ablution stated in the Qur'an sequentially there's no mention of wiping of ears. Your ulama added that just to be difft from Shi'a!

Allah enjoyed you to wipe your head and feet. Shia does but Sunni washes just to be difft from Shi'a!

Shi'a unfold hands in salat being the real practice of the prophet but you wanna be difft from shi'a, then you fold!

Etc etc etc. Allah watches and unto Him is our return. Ignorancy or other excuses are not welcome in the sight of Allah on the day of judgment.

"Follow the truth then you will recognize its people"~Imam Ali (a.s).
I say: do not follow personality in searching the truth for you will be blind to uncover the truth.

like seriously?. i didnt even know all these. Buh honestly and common sensically yu shudnt say sunnis r d ones trying to be diff. from the shia. it could as well be that shias refuse to wash ear so dey cud be diff from sunnis who are already doin it
now to the folding of arm in salah...that is just normal..it breeds concentration. didnt the prophet prescribe placing the right hand above the left?..wen yu stand straight with toes facing qiblah and yu fold those ur long arms on ur chest, yu will gain better hold of dah salah dan leaving the arms loose by ur sides

wallahu a'lam

Hmmm...better luck next try sister!
Those are the myth told by modern day Sunni scholars.

Ablution: why don't you read sura al-Maidah and tell me where Allah made mention of ears?

What about wiping of head and feet? Read: www.nairaland.com/1448545/ablution-wudu-under-microscope

Folding of arms: So until you fold arms can you get concentration? Lol! Only inside your heart/mind can you get concentration! Why is the Madhhab of Imam maliki (who was born, bred and lived in Madina) different from others for he was known for keeping his hands straight unfolded in salat?

I nearly laughed my heart out when Abu Ameena Bilal phillips (a staunch salafi) explained Imam malik was injured so he couldn't fold his arms in salat. No evidence to back his lame claim anyway! What about tens of thousands students of Imam malik who later became Scholars of Maliki school? Were they also injured?

Anytime i step into Islam for Muslims. I come for business. I come for truth. I come with evidences and i put aside my ego, willing to eat the humble pie if i happen get proved wrong. That is what "belief" should be about.

Unfortunately it get boring over here at times and bordom kills me. Because most persons come in with their ego, and want to publicize or preach their beliefs or doctrines with minor or no evidences to support them. And they hate even a honest attempt to question or probe them. Every other aspect of life, people deem it necessary to look before they leap but when it comes to religion, nobody want to investigate or think. Everyone want to just go ahead with the crowd. This is the main reason why disbelievers throughout the Qur'an rejected messengers. They weren't willing to consider that their forefathers could have been wrong. They found the religion of their fathers too good to be wrong.

If as a muslim, you believe this thursday is a special day and intend to fast on that day, yet you have no written or empirical evidence to back it up against the criticisms leveled by the Op and the few hadiths i have quoted above, then you may want to consider having a second though about Muharram 10th.

They don't wanna be questioned. Talk about Dogmatic beliefs!
You see them ascribing lies upon the prophet while they exalt one of their heroes. And if you dare question these heroes of theirs, you get rains of abuse. Ibn Taymiyah was their fore-father so expect worse from them (www.nairaland.com/1458713/blatant-liar).
Now I can conveniently say they "...have heart but could not perceive; they have eyes but could not see...they are like cattles! Nay! Worse than cattle..."~Qur'an.

i do not want to belabor the issue of the fast. but the messenger [SA] could tell him ummah to adopt a specific sunnah of another messenger, in this case Musa [AS] because it glorifying Allah as Musa [AS] did ib his lifetime. after all, they are prophetic brothers [AS]. and Musa [AS] by the Mercy of Allah on the ummah of Muhammad [SA] interceded on the number of daily salat until it became 5. even then, Musa [AS] was still suggesting it to be lower.

the Messenger [SA] encouraged us to adopt the piety of other prophets [AS] as well. so fasting on Ashura because Musa [AS] should not be a strange thing. The prophet [SA] mentioned the fasting of Daud [AS] as well.

anyone who may suggest that the prophet [SA] may have not received revelation on Ashura fasting may need to asking him/herself what form of revelation additionally needed before what he said is accepted? did he [SA] receive additional revelation in correcting salat when he said Allah made me shorten asr so that Allah can make me show how to correct your salat?

Allah says accept what the messenger [SA] give/command you, oh believer. Allah says the prophet [SA] does not say except what has been inspired in him [SA]. the prophet [SA] i was given the Quran and something like it [sunnah].

i believe Muhammad [SA] 100%. some doubted him about isra wa miraj, in spite of it being in the Quran. so it is no surprise some may doubt the Ashura fast since it is not in the Quran.

and at to the 'when he arrived in madina. . . . and he died the following year', one will have to know that the jews were people hiding their 'truth' thinking that truth is meant for them, alone. they turn truth upside down, making heritage due through the bloodline of the mother. they forgot that if this is so, the children of Musa [AS] are therefore not jews [loosely used in this case because it will yahud]. so head or tail, they lose.

the explanation of 10 years in Madina and only once he [SA] noticed them on the fast could be because they fast it then once every 10 years. or they just decided to practice it as a test since they now know there is 'the prophet' expected and he [SA] is an arab, not a jew, since they hoped he would be a jew so that he can fight on their side against the arabs. the jews may just be changing their religious calender even then and definitely, the evidence of that is here, today. there are mundane things while they left the more important things; annual sacrifice that they used to do [watch the video on youtube by a rabbi confirming islam is the older than judaism], hajj they used to make. there is a reason that [SA] saw them only one time. Allah has willed it this way and there is nothing to change it.

lets unite as muslims. let pray that Allah guide our hearts, forgives us and showers us with Mercy and we end as those who are victorious by His Mercy; gazing on HiM, often. Amin.

RoyPCain, the only revealation the Prophet received are the 114 chapters of the Qur'an and he testified to this fact in Qur'an 6:19. And that was what he lived by(Qur'an 5:48-49). Hence, without any ayat ordering for it, the Prophet wouldn't have commanded muslims to fast on any day.
Again a book that is full of contradictions and insults to God,messengers, women cannot be a book similar to the Qur'an(Qur'an 4:82). There is no mention of 'Hadiths of Prophet' or 'Sunnah of Prophet' in the entire Qur'an. Whenever the word hadith is used in the Qur'an for other than the Qur'an itself, it carries negative meaning(Qur'an 7:185,31:6,45:6,77:50). All through the Qur'an,only sunnatullah can be found, which always refer to God 's pattern in dealing with past communities of men(Qur'an 17:77). Nowhere is 'sunnah of Prophet' mentioned. The only thing the Prophet left behind after his death was nothing but a written copy of the Qur'an. Lastly the prophet did speak out of his own desire or thinking, Qur'an 53:3, is only implying that the verses the Prophet recited were all divine revealations he recieved.

You were right though, the Jews could have changed their calendar, but how can we be sure of that? Also, no hadith tell us that the fasting was observed once per decade so we just have to assume it could have been an annual practice.
But unfortunately, no where in history or record did the Jews fast to mark the exodus. Yes they do celebrate the exodus till date in the hebrew month of Nissan but they do not fast.

I appreciate your effort but you left out a some salient issues. The few hadiths i quoted in my previous posts still stand against the Ashura day fasting. Will you mind treating them?

Damn! I 've seen the mods' injustice. Am not even a shiite, yet i can see clearly that the whole Ashura day fasting of a thing is a fabricated hadith and the ummayad 's conspiracy have worked very well indeed. How come our literate or educated sunnis choose to conceal the truth despite all these? The whole thing make me sick. With these you can now see that how long one 's beard or hijab is, has nothing to do with piety and sincerity. U can now see why the Christians don't listen to you while you preach. One thing however is that the truth is distinct from falsehood,no in-between. The gulity 's conscience will continue to haunt him.

Am not done here though. Show is far from over. There are still contradictory accounts of Ashura day fasting in Bukhari that i intend to analyse.

1. Your wording: "...but the messenger [SA] could tell his ummah to adopt a specific sunnah of another messenger..."

REPLY: All the prophets of God are the same as far as their messages to be proclaim are concern~Qur'an says! But they have variations as per their respective Sunnah due to where they were sent; cultural or geographical wise! Muhammad was the last prophet. How many of the practices of the Sunnah of the previous prophets had been erased and substituted with a perfect one at the arrival of Islam!
Indeed truthful is the word of Allah:

"It is He who sent the prophet with guidance and the religion of truth to PREVAIL OVER ALL DEEN..."~Surat Saff.

NB: This ayah can be found in many suras in the holy Qur'an with different concluding phrase. DEEN although usually translated as religion, it also encompasses all form of practices and norms etc.
Isa, Musa, Yaqub, Dawud et al have their own form of fasting and salat but Allah substituted with better ones at the prophet-hood of Muhammad.

NB: As per Nabi Musa intercede on daily salat, although that's a side talk; I do not believe in that also. No solid evidence (Hujjah -proof) for it. Besides how is it possible for Musa to intercede for Muhammad's daily Salat? Musa was sent to the Jews while Muhammad was sent primarily to the Arabs but with a universal message to mankind; two entirely different tribe with difft cultural background! Muhammad knew his people more than anybody. He spent 40years with them before being appointed as a prophet. Do you think the 40years was a joke and idle play? He knew his people's psyche more than anybody else not to mention of Musa who never had contact with them. This belief with a crooked belief that a particular sahaba dreamt about Adhan and then revealed to the prophet how to call for salat where Muhammad adopted it amidst all previous suggestion on how to call people for salat; all these baseless points are rejected by the school of ahl al-bayt (Shi'a). We believe Laylatul Isra wal Miraj of the prophet was a perfect journey in which everything he (saws) needs to know pertaining to Salat (5 daily salat, how to perform it, adhan, iqama etc) have been elaborated fully for him by his Lord.

2. Your wording "...the Messenger [SA] encouraged us to adopt the piety of other prophets [AS] as well..."

REPLY: "Indeed, in the messenger of Allah a 'good example (uswatun hasana / ﺃﺳﻮﺓ ﺣﺴﻨﺔ )' has been set for the one who seeks Allah and the Last Day and thinks constantly about Allah." (Qur'an 33:21)"

Although Allah set example of many prophets for Muhammad and his Ummah in the Qur'an; but their time were difft from Muhammad's therefore Muslims were ordered to follow their prophet Muhammad(saws). All these prophet's piety were embodied into that of Muhammad (saws).

3. REVELATION!
Our belief is every single word or decision of Muhammad is being guided and guarded through inspiration by his Lord.

"By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes).
Your companion (Muhammad SAW) has neither gone astray nor has erred.
Nor does he speak of (his own) desire.
It is only an Inspiration that is inspired.
He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]."~Sura Najm vs 1- 5.

NB: Sunni believe Muhammad's infallibility is limited to revelation. Aside that they believe he can make mistake or seek people's advice. Shi'a reject all this. (www.nairaland.com/1480939/concept-infallibility-isma). Kindly read all the comments and replies to them also.

How many places in the Qur'an has Allah warned muslims against the snare of the Jew! We were told never to make them friend or protector or advisers. It is however irrational for the holy prophet to ask JEW.

Has Allah not repeatedly told the story of Musa and Fir'aun with the escape of Bani Israel in the Qur'an? Several verses were revealed on these events alone. Musa was mentioned in the Qur'an more than any other prophet for that matter. If there's an important fasting synchronize with the day Musa escaped from Fir'aun, Allah would have revealed it either in the Qur'an or personally for His prophet (saws). Never and Ever will JEW tell Nabi Muhammad.

4. Your wording: "... and at to the 'when he arrived in madina. . . . and he died the following year',..."

REPLY: kindly Re-read those arguments on that pls. For the prophet (saws) to have alledgedly said in the hadith that NEXT year he will fast 9th & 10th gave impression the fast is yearly and All Sunni interpreted it to be yearly. Besides there's no prove (even weak) to support your thought.

Holy prophet arrived Madina in the 1st year of Hijrah and died 10th year of Hijrah. There were just 3 tribes in Madina at his arrival. Two accepted Islam as far back as 5th year of Hijrah the only tribe left was conquered and annihilated by the force of Imam Ali (a.s) under the commandment of the prophet in the 7th year of Hijrah.

Now Al-baqir is being banned. Just for comments and replies to certain comments directed to him in the link he posted above. How fair and just are these Mods?
So since questions of that magnitude can't be addressed and answer faithfully, the next bus-stop is to delete all his comment followed by ban! This is a joke.

No wonder why the holy prophet exclaimed 3 times in the hadith where he said he h
as left two weighty things for us in "the book of God and his ahl al-bayt"; he concluded saying:

"I warn you concerning my ahl al-bayt"
(3times he said).

Today many have been brainwashed to the extent that if you raised objection against sahih al-Bukhari, they will nearly crucify you as if sahih Bukhari is infallible. Such is the act of the Nasibi.

Thanks for your time. May Allah guide us to the right path.

a. The hadeeth does not state that the Prophet
he found them fasting the same period he
entered Madina. However, when someone
speaks without knowledge he would surely
make stupied conclusion. This is known
method in Arabic language that the writer does
not even have a clue about it. The hadeeth
likes to say: when the Prophet entered the
Madina, he found jews fasting ashoura (i.e. he
arrived and when ashoura came they were
fasting it...).

b. Jews used to calculate Ahsoura based on
solar calander not luner so the day is not the
same every year and hence the day could be in
any month. This is known.

c. The Prophet fasted the day while he was at
Mecca anyhow and what happened in Madina
is a confirmation. This is known in the Sahih
from Ibn Umar and Aisha. reason for fasting Ashuraa was
twofold. Before Hijrah, it was a day when the
Ka`bah was dressed and was fasted by Quraish
(Bukhari and Muslim). After the Hijrah,
Muslims found that it was also a day the Jews
of Madinah fasted and the Prophet fasted it
too. Thus, it became among the Islamic acts of
worship regardless of what the Jews did or did
not do.

d. The companions who narrated it could be
from the Mursal of companions who narrate
from other companion a known hadeeth to
everyone.

e. There is no one who opposed them when
they narrated these narrations which mean
they are all correct.

May Allah guide us all as we do live an era of
ignorants.

[b]Innovations Common on 'Ashura'

Shaykh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah ( may
Allah have
mercy on him) was asked about the
things that
people deople do on 'Ashura' , such as
wearing
kohl , taking a bath ( ghusl), wearing
henna,
shaking hands with one another, cooking
grains
(hubub ), showing happiness and so on.
Was
any of this reported from the Prophet
(peace
and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a
sahih
hadith , or not? If nothing to that effect
was
reported in a sahih hadith , is doing these
things bid'ah , or not? Is there any basis
for
what the other group do, such as grieving
and
mourning, going without anything to
drink,
eulogizing and wailing, reciting in a crazy
manner, and rending their garments?
rments?
His reply was: "Praise be to Allah, the
Lord of
the Worlds. Nothing to that effect has
been
reported in any sahih hadith from the
Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) or
from his Companions. None of the Imams
of
the Muslims encouraged or recommended
such
things, neither the four Imams, nor any
others.
No reliable scholars have narrated
anything
like this, neither from the Prophet
( peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him), nor from
the
Sahabah , nor from the Tabi'in; neither in
any
sahih report or in a da'if (weak) report;
neither
in the books of Sahih, nor in as-Sunan ,
nor in
the Musnads. No hadith of this nature
was
known during the best centuries, but
some of
the later narrators reported ahadith like
the
one which says, 'Whoever puts kohl in
his eyes
on the day of 'Ashura' will not suffer
from eye
disease in that year, and whoever takes a
bath
(does ghusl) on the day of 'Ashura' will
not get
sick in that year,' and so on. They also
reported a fabricated hadith that is
falsely
attributed to the Prophet ( peace and
blessings
of Allah be upon him), which says,
'Whoever is
generous to his family on the day of
'Ashura' ,
Allah will be generous to him for the rest
of
the year.' Reporting all of this from the
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon
him) is tantamount to lying."
Then he [Ibn Taymiyyah ( may Allah have
mercy
on him) ] discussed in brief the
tribulations that
had occurred in the early days of this
Ummah
and the killing of al-Husayn ( may Allah
be
pleased with him), and what the various
sects
had done because of this. Then he said:
"An ignorant, wrongful group – who were
either heretics and hypocrites, or
misguided and misled – made a show of
allegiance to him and the members of his
household, so they took the day of
'Ashura' as a day of mourning and
wailing, in which they openly displayed
the rituals of jahiliyyah such as slapping
their cheeks and rending their garments,
grieving in the manner of the
jahiliyyah ...…
"The Shaytan made this attractive to
those who are misled, so they took the
day of 'Ashura' as an occasion of
mourning, when they grieve and wail,
recite poems of grief and tell stories
filled with lies. Whatever truth there may
be in these stories serves no purpose
other than the renewal of their grief and
sectarian feeling, and the stirring up of
hatred and hostility among the Muslims,
which they do by cursing those who
came
before them …
"The evil and harm that they do to the
Muslims cannot be enumerated by any
man, no matter how eloquent he is. Some
others – either Nasibis who oppose and
have enmity towards al-Husayn and his
family or ignorant people who try to
fight evil with evil, corruption with
corruption, lies with lies and bid'ah with
bid'ah – opposed them by fabricating
reports in favour of making the day of
'Ashura' a day of celebration, by wearing
kohl and henna , spending money on
one's
children, cooking special dishes and
other things that are done on 'Eid and
special occasions. These people took the
day of 'Ashura' as a festival like 'Eid ,
whereas the others took it as a day of
mourning. Both are wrong, and both go
against the Sunnah , even though the
other group (those who take it as a day
of
mourning) are worse in intention and
more ignorant and more plainly wrong …
"Neither the Prophet ( peace and
blessings
of Allah be upon him) nor his successors
(the khulafa' ar-rashidun ) did any of
these
things on the day of 'Ashura', they
neither made it a day of mourning nor a
day of celebration …
"As for the other things, such as cooking
special dishes with or without grains, or
wearing new clothes, or spending money
on one's family, or buying the year's
supplies on that day, or doing special
acts of worship such as special prayers or
deliberately slaughtering an animal on
that day, or saving some of the meat of
the sacrifice to cook with grains, or
wearing kohl and henna, or taking a bath
(ghusl), or shaking hands with one
another, or visiting one another, or
visiting the mosques and shrines and so
on … all of this is reprehensible bid'ah
and is wrong. None of it has anything to
do with the Sunnah of the Messenger of
Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him) or the way of the Khulafa' ar-
Rashidun. It was not approved of by any
of the Imams of the Muslims, not Malik,
not ath-Thawri, not al-Layth ibn Sa'ad,
not Abu Hanifah, not al-Awza'i, not al-
Shafi'i, not Ahmad ibn Hanbal, not Ishaq
ibn Rahwayh, not any of the Imams and
scholars of the Muslims." [Al-Fatawa al-
Kubra by Ibn Taymiyyah]
Ibn al-Hajj (may Allah have mercy on
him)
mentioned that one of the bid'ah on
'Ashura'
was deliberately paying zakat on this day,
late
or early, or slaughtering a chicken just
for this
occasion, or – in the case of women –
using
henna . [ Al-Madkhal , part 1, Yawm

xclusive43: Allah's sacred month of Muharram is a blessed and important month. It is the first month of the Hijri calendar and is one of the four sacred months concerning which Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): "Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein … " [ Al-Qur'an 9:36] Abu Bakarah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ( peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The year is twelve months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul- Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumadah and Sha'ban." [Reported by al-Bukhari, 2958] Muharram is so called because it is a sacred (muharram) month and to confirm its sanctity. Allah's words (interpretation of the meaning): " ... so wrong not yourselves therein … " mean do not wrong yourselves in these sacred months, because sin in these months is worse than in other months. It was reported that Ibn 'Abbas said that this phrase referred to all the months, then these four were singled out and made sacred, so that sin in these months is more serious and good deeds bring a greater reward. Qatadah said concerning this phrase that wrongdoing during the sacred months is more serious and more sinful that wrongdoing at any other time. Wrongdoing at any time is a serious matter, but Allah gives more weight to whichever of His commands He will. Allah has chosen certain ones of His creation. He has chosen from among the angels Messengers and from among mankind Messengers. He chose from among speech the remembrance of Him (dhikr). He chose from among the earth the mosques, from among the months Ramadhan and the sacred months, from among the days Friday and from among the nights Laylatul- Qadr , so venerate that which Allah has told us to venerate. People of understanding and wisdom venerate the things that Allah has told us to venerate. [Summarized from the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him. Tafsir of Surah at-Tawbah , ayah 36] The Virtue of Observing More Nafil Fasts During Muharram Abu Hurayrah ( may Allah be pleased with him ) said: "The Messenger of Allah ( peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'The best of fasting after Ramadhan is fasting Allah's month of Muharram.' " [Reported by Muslim, 1982] The phrase "Allah's month" , connecting the name of the month to the name of Allah in a genitive grammatical structure, signifies the importance of the month. Al-Qari said: "The apparent meaning is all of the month of Muharram." But it was proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) never fasted any whole month apart from Ramadhan , so this hadith is probably meant to encourage increasing one's fasting during Muharram, without meaning that one should fast for the entire month. It was reported that the Prophet ( peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to fast more in Sha'ban. It is likely that the virtue of Muharram was not revealed to him until the end of his life, before he was able to fast during this month. [ Sharh an-Nawawi 'ala Sahih Muslim] Allah Chooses Whatever Times and Places He Wills Al-'Izz ibn 'Abdus-Salam ( may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Times and places may be given preferred status in two ways, either temporal or religious/spiritual. With regard to the latter, this is because Allah bestows His generosity on His slaves at those times or in those places, by giving a greater reward for deeds done, such as giving a greater reward for fasting in Ramadhan than for fasting at all other times, and also on the day of 'Ashura' , the virtue of which is due to Allah's generosity and kindness towards His slaves on that day … " [Qawa'id al- Ahkam , 1/38] 'Ashura' in History Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him ) said: "The Prophet ( peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of 'Ashura' . He said, 'What is this?' They said, 'This is a righteous day, it is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Musa fasted on this day.' He said, 'We have more right to Musa than you,' so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day." [Reported by al-Bukhari, 1865] "This is a righteous day" – in a report narrated by Muslim, [the Jews said:] "This is a great day, on which Allah saved Musa and his people, and drowned Pharaoh and his people." "Musa fasted on this day" – a report narrated by Muslim adds: " … in thanksgiving to Allah, so we fast on this day." According to a report narrated by al-Bukhari: " … so we fast on this day to venerate it." A version narrated by Imam Ahmad adds: "This is the day on which the Ark settled on Mount Judi, so Nuh fasted this day in thanksgiving," and "commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day" – according to another report also narrated by al- Bukhari: "He said to his Companions: 'You have more right to Musa than they do, so fast on that day.' " The practice of fasting on 'Ashura' was known even in the days of Jahiliyyah, before the Prophet's mission. It was reported that 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her ) said: "The people of Jahiliyyah used to fast on that day … " Al-Qurtubi said: "Perhaps Quraysh used to fast on that day on the basis of some past law, such as that of Ibrahim, upon whom be peace." It was also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to fast on 'Ashura' in Makkah, before he migrated to Madinah. When he migrated to Madinah, he found the Jews celebrating this day, so he asked them why, and they replied as described in the hadith quoted above. He commanded the Muslims to be different from the Jews, who took it as a festival, as was reported in the hadith of Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "The Jews used to take the day of 'Ashura' as a festival [according to a report narrated by Muslim: the day of 'Ashura' was venerated by the Jews, who took it as a festival. According to another report also narrated by Muslim: the people of Khaybar (the Jews) used to take it as a festival and their women would wear their jewellery and symbols on that day]. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'So you [Muslims] should fast on that day.' " [Reported by al- Bukhari] Apparently the motive for commanding the Muslims to fast on this day was the desire to be different from the Jews, so that the Muslims would fast when the Jews did not, because people do not fast on a day of celebration. [Summarized from the words of al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar – may Allah have mercy on him – in Fath al-Bari Sharh 'ala Sahih al- Bukhari ] Fasting on 'Ashura' was a gradual step in the process of introducing fasting as a prescribed obligation in Islam. Fasting appeared in three forms. When the Messenger of Allah ( peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah, he told the Muslims to fast on three days of every month and on the day of 'Ashura' , then Allah made fasting obligatory when He said (interpretation of the meaning): " … observing the fasting is prescribed for you … " [ Al-Qur'an 2:183] [Ahkam al-Qur'an by al-Jassas, part 1] The obligation was transferred from the fast of 'Ashura' to the fast of Ramadhan , and this one of the proofs in the field of Usul al-Fiqh that it is possible to abrogate a lighter duty in favour of a heavier duty. Before the obligation of fasting 'Ashura' was abrogated, fasting on this day was obligatory, as can be seen from the clear command to observe this fast. Then it was further confirmed later on, then reaffirmed by making it a general command addressed to everybody, and once again by instructing mothers not to breastfeed their infants during this fast. It was reported from Ibn Mas'ud that when fasting Ramadhan was made obligatory, the obligation to fast 'Ashura' was lifted, i.e., it was no longer obligatory to fast on this day, but it is still desirable (mustahabb).

blessings of Allah be upon him), nor from
the
Sahabah , nor from the Tabi'in; neither in
any
sahih report or in a da'if (weak) report;
neither
in the books of Sahih, nor in as-Sunan ,
nor in
the Musnads. No hadith of this nature
was
known during the best centuries, but
some of
the later narrators reported ahadith like
the
one which says, 'Whoever puts kohl in
his eyes
on the day of 'Ashura' will not suffer
from eye
disease in that year, and whoever takes a
bath
(does ghusl) on the day of 'Ashura' will
not get
sick in that year,' and so on. They also
reported a fabricated hadith that is
falsely
attributed to the Prophet ( peace and
blessings
of Allah be upon him), which says,
'Whoever is
generous to his family on the day of
'Ashura' ,
Allah will be generous to him for the rest
of
the year.' Reporting all of this from the
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon
him) is tantamount to lying."
Then he [Ibn Taymiyyah ( may Allah have
mercy
on him) ] discussed in brief the
tribulations that
had occurred in the early days of this
Ummah
and the killing of al-Husayn ( may Allah
be
pleased with him), and what the various
sects
had done because of this. Then he said:
"An ignorant, wrongful group – who were
either heretics and hypocrites, or
misguided and misled – made a show of
allegiance to him and the members of his
household, so they took the day of
'Ashura' as a day of mourning and
wailing, in which they openly displayed
the rituals of jahiliyyah such as slapping
their cheeks and rending their garments,
grieving in the manner of the
jahiliyyah ...…
"The Shaytan made this attractive to
those who are misled, so they took the
day of 'Ashura' as an occasion of
mourning, when they grieve and wail,
recite poems of grief and tell stories
filled with lies. Whatever truth there may
be in these stories serves no purpose
other than the renewal of their grief and
sectarian feeling, and the stirring up of
hatred and hostility among the Muslims,
which they do by cursing those who
came
before them …
"The evil and harm that they do to the
Muslims cannot be enumerated by any
man, no matter how eloquent he is. Some
others – either Nasibis who oppose and
have enmity towards al-Husayn and his
family or ignorant people who try to
fight evil with evil, corruption with
corruption, lies with lies and bid'ah with
bid'ah – opposed them by fabricating
reports in favour of making the day of
'Ashura' a day of celebration, by wearing
kohl and henna , spending money on
one's
children, cooking special dishes and
other things that are done on 'Eid and
special occasions. These people took the
day of 'Ashura' as a festival like 'Eid ,
whereas the others took it as a day of
mourning. Both are wrong, and both go
against the Sunnah , even though the
other group (those who take it as a day
of
mourning) are worse in intention and
more ignorant and more plainly wrong …
"Neither the Prophet ( peace and
blessings
of Allah be upon him) nor his successors
(the khulafa' ar-rashidun ) did any of
these
things on the day of 'Ashura', they
neither made it a day of mourning nor a
day of celebration …
"As for the other things, such as cooking
special dishes with or without grains, or
wearing new clothes, or spending money
on one's family, or buying the year's
supplies on that day, or doing special
acts of worship such as special prayers or
deliberately slaughtering an animal on
that day, or saving some of the meat of
the sacrifice to cook with grains, or
wearing kohl and henna, or taking a bath
(ghusl), or shaking hands with one
another, or visiting one another, or
visiting the mosques and shrines and so
on … all of this is reprehensible bid'ah
and is wrong. None of it has anything to
do with the Sunnah of the Messenger of
Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be
upon him) or the way of the Khulafa' ar-
Rashidun. It was not approved of by any
of the Imams of the Muslims, not Malik,
not ath-Thawri, not al-Layth ibn Sa'ad,
not Abu Hanifah, not al-Awza'i, not al-
Shafi'i, not Ahmad ibn Hanbal, not Ishaq
ibn Rahwayh, not any of the Imams and
scholars of the Muslims." [Al-Fatawa al-
Kubra by Ibn Taymiyyah]
Ibn al-Hajj (may Allah have mercy on
him)
mentioned that one of the bid'ah on
'Ashura'
was deliberately paying zakat on this day,
late
or early, or slaughtering a chicken just
for this
occasion, or – in the case of women –
using
henna . [ Al-Madkhal , part 1, Yawm
'Ashura' ][/b]

Now Al-baqir is being banned. Just for comments and replies to certain comments directed to him in the link he posted above. How fair and just are these Mods?
So since questions of that magnitude can't be addressed and answer faithfully, the next bus-stop is to delete all his comment followed by ban! This is a joke.
