Government Convoy Causes Accident In Lagos, 2 killed, Many Injured by espn(m): 8:11am On Nov 14, 2013
Two persons were killed on Wednesday, while no fewer than nine others were injured after a tipper rammed into pedestrians at the U-turn end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The tipper was said to be avoiding a government convoy of seven vehicles that allegedly drove recklessly into the expressway from a side road. The incident was said to have occurred between 11am and 12pm.

Eyewitness said the convoy had stopped to visit a yet-to-be identified person admitted at a private hospital in the area.

A witness, who requested anonymity said, "It was a convoy of about seven vehicles. There were four jeeps and three escort vans. The escorts were riot policemen.

"On their way back, while connecting the express, the convoy caused the accident. They drove into the expressway recklessly without stopping to check for oncoming vehicles.

"At the time they connected the expressway, a tipper was approaching on top speed. To avoid hitting the convoy, the tipper swerved to the right side of the road. It lost control and rammed into some pedestrians standing by the side of the road."

The eyewitness said 11 persons were hit, while two died on the spot. It was learnt that the convoy did not wait initially, but went to make a U-turn to the other side of the expressway.

It was learnt that the convoy later stopped few metres opposite the scene of the accident.

The eyewitness said, "The riot policemen came down, they watched the scene for a while, jumped into their vehicles and proceeded towards the Sango area of Ogun State.

"We could not challenge the convoy when it stopped because the policemen carried guns and they looked menacing."

It was learnt that a Lagos State Ambulance Service bus later arrived to convey victims to the hospital.

Eyewitnesses were unsure if the convoy belonged to either the Lagos or Ogun state governments.

One of them said, "The number plates of the vehicles were covered. Some people later came and said the number plates on the vehicles of the police had Ogun State written on them."

A senior police officer attached to Oke Odo Police Division, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not the command's spokesperson, said, "We were informed that a truck coming from Abeokuta, had experienced brake failure while trying to avoid hitting another vehicle.

"The truck swerved off the road and in the process, ran into some pedestrians who were standing by the side of the expressway. We are aware that two persons were killed in the accident and that they had been conveyed to a general hospital by sympathisers at the scene.

"However, we do not know if the vehicle belonged to a convoy because we did not meet it at the scene."

Ogun State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Yusup Olayniyonu, said the convoy was not that of the Ogun government.

He said, "The governor is at Abeokuta and the deputy governor is also at Abeokuta. Neither was in Lagos today."

The Lagos State Commissioner for information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, aso said no government convoy from the state went to the area.

A highly placed government official also said, "The governor is in Marina, Lagos Island, while the deputy governor is outside the country. No government official was in that area today (Wednesday)."

The telephone line of the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, rang out. Text messages sent to the phone waere not replied to as of the time of going to the press.

I guess this is the trending thing these days amongst state Governors.
1st, it was Kaduna state governor, then Kogi and now Lagos...

Perhaps, they should start flying even if they are traveling within their compounds. tongue tongue tongue

How can you challenge Nigerian Police who are trigger-happy-hungry and angry-looking illiterates?

I am not surprised at the above. That is the more reason why Police isn't our friend. They are good at changing the true picture of events to suit them. Bunch of lying bastards

Why won't they deny the incident? Last year December, that was how Kogi Governor's convoy caused accident and killing people in the process. The latest of such reckless driving led to the death of Prof. Iyayi, so I'm not surprised that they have come to deny the report. I think something urgent needs to be done about the crazy-convoy-drivers who drives as if they are immune from accident killing people in the process.

Is Kogi State Governor progressive too after his convoy rammed into Prof. Festus Iyayi's car, killing him in the process?

Don't mind the coconot heads. They would prefer not to believe this because it involves their beloved "progressive" APC rascals in the South West - who can do no wrong in their eyes. Go to the Wada/Iyayi thread and see them feasting on the recklessness of PDP governors' convoys. Shameless hypocrites!

geeez: This is absurd to say the least

Why can't governors' convoys move like Fashola's?

I'm disappointed in Ajimobi's security detail

This shouldn't be happening in the 21st century, in Yorubaland

If I had this man's contacts, I'll take the case up and ensure he is compensated, even if it's a quiet settlement
Some hypocrisy are on the run. Buhahahahahahahaha

Since no one is laying claims to the convoy, what happens next? Who foots the hospital bills of the injured? Who compensates the families of the dead victims?

Gov Fashola should be the one to compensate the victims families since the accident happened in his state. # My take on your question

I don't think so! I doubt if the convoy belongs to Fashola or any other government official from Lagos because they don't drive on top speed and blow sirens. The convoy must be from neighbouring states. I suspect Ogun state anyway.

Next time beat the driver to death for making the wrong decision. If he had faced the convoy by now we would have known who was in the convoy. Its like he felt the lifes of the ordinary people is worth nothing so let me face their direction. Now the dead bodies family would have to suffer for nothing. Fela double wahala for dead body and the owner of dead body.

Sometimes I just wonder if GOD is just deliberately punishing us or he is just expecting us to make the first move.

May there souls rest in peace amen.

So what has Fashola got to do with the situation at hand? Is he the cause of convoys bashing and killing lagosians? Do you have any proof that he is the one in the convoy? At least it is evident that Kogi state convoy killed Prof. Iyayi. What proof do you have that it was Fashola's convoy that did this?

Next the rodents would descend on the thread to blackmail the mods into takin this to the fp since it happened in lagos. The convoy belongs to neither Ogun nor Lagos state govt. That we have a horde of policemen attached to the convoy doesn't mean it belongs to a state govt. It might well be one of the crooks in abuja that had gone to lag to cool off a little since the blunders of their HNIC is bringing so much heat upon them.

May leprosy strike the fingers of anyone who quotes me!

Coincidentally, I also live on the same axis with you. Several times I have seen Fashola's convoy, there are no sirens blaring instead you see flashing of lights from the cars and they don't move on top speed. I have also seen a serving senator from Lagos on Lagos-Ibadan expressway in a traffic jam near mowe and he didn't disturb anyone with sirens.
