The Peaceful Conduct Of Anambra Guber Election: The Good Step And The Lapses by Ngwakwe: 10:09pm On Nov 18, 2013

The sacrosanctity of lives of the Anambrarians and that of any Nigerian cannot be jeopardised or compromised for political ambition of any politician or political party.

Irrespective of the shortcomings of the just concluded Anambra Gubernatorial election, we the members of Njiko Ndigbo Organisation (NNO) - Online Chapter express our unfathomed joy on the peaceful conduct of the election devoid of bloodshed neither was there any reported destruction of government or public infrastructure because of grievance by the supporters of "short-changed" or defeated parties.

Anambrarians exhibited political maturity by embracing peaceful election. In some parts of the country, elections are marred by violence, both during the run up to and after the elections.

We cannot wish away the reported election hitches and delays in some wards and the flaws that could have compromised the results of the election in 65 polling stations in Idenmili LGA. We also use this medium to compel the INEC chairman to sanitise the commission's workforce by getting rid of the bad eggs and to restore the confidence of Nigerians in the electoral process and to forestall future callosal voters apathy as witnessed in this Anambra election.

We also observed that about seven hundred thousand Anambrarians were disfranchised by the application of "yet to be perfected system (beta software)" which its aims have turned out to be injurious to the process and we strongly advice the commission to resolve the issues in the shortest possible time.

We are grateful to some civil society organisations who played constructive roles in the recently concluded elections, particularly in raising the level of political discourse beforehand. Their monitoring of the elections and support for the election observation processes were also key. For example, the African Independent Television, Silverbird TV and Channels TV organised three debates for the Gubernatorial Candidates. Although they may not have contributed directly to the fortunes of the participating candidates, such debates helped move the political campaigns from their propensity for vitriolic and personal attacks to being issue-based and connected to public discourse.

The issues discussed provided the
media with lots of insights into the parties’ plans for the State and the public with information that would influence their political choices.

We are also grateful to Saharareporters, the Nation, Premium times, Osun defenders etc for providing a proper coverage for the election and have provided many insight on the flaws experienced in this election.

Thanks to extraordinary security measures by law enforcing authorities.

Looking forward to peaceful conclusion of the supplementary election where a winner will emerge to lead the Anambrarians for the next four years.

We use this opportunity to sympathise with the families who lost their loved ones in the Adoration Camp vigil prayer night and pray that God will give them the fortitude to bear the losses.
