Massive Unemployment In Enugu; 8,000 Job Seekers Besiege UNTH For 10 Openings by Nobody: 11:58am On Nov 29, 2013
The unemployment rate in Enugu is one of the highest in Nigeria.

At least 8,000 job seekers stormed the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital to interview for the position of administrative officers, on Thursday.

The applicants responded to the university’s local advertisement for Administrative Officer II. At least, 5,000, were shortlisted for the interview. The position the job seekers interviewed for – Administrative Officer II – is one of over thirty categories of workers the university advertised recently.

Although the university did not indicate the number of administrative officer vacancies it hopes to employ, a staff of the university told PREMIUM TIMES not more than 10 applicants will be employed in each category through the process.

The employment drive began earlier this week. The previous day, about the same number of jobseekers besieged the school to be interviewed for positions in paramedics and few auxiliary jobs.

The job seekers, mostly young graduates, overwhelmed the school’s facilities. Many waited under the sun for hours to be interviewed. Others sat on bricks for an opportunity to be interviewed.

Enugu, formerly the administrative capital of south east Nigeria, is the largest city in the zone. it has at least six tertiary institutions but also one of the highest unemployment and crime rate in Nigeria. Nigeria Bureau of Statistics says at least 28 per cent of employable residents of the state are unemployed; a figure many say is grossly underestimated.

Enugu’s unemployment rate is more than 100 percent higher than the 12 percent recorded in neighbouring Anambra state.

In August this year, at least 6,251 job seekers applied for 400 vacancies at the Universal Basic Education Enugu, with an expected monthly salary of N18, 000.00.

The job rush at UNTH exemplifies the scorching job shortage in Nigeria. From a record low of 5.3 per cent in 2006, the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics admits it has worsened by 400.5 percent to 24 percent at the end of 2011.

The World Bank estimates that Nigeria’s youth unemployment is high up at 38 percent. Many Nigerians argue World Bank and government estimates are conservative.

“In a family of five kids, you will hardly find more than two employed,” Chinasa Ugwu, one of the applicants, who sought to be an Environmental Officer II, said. Interviewing for her category was cancelled by the university

Sullivan Chime is doing well in the area of road construction in the city centre but governance is much more than road construction. There is job creation, education, health, human capacity development, sports development, etc. The governor should be told to sit up in these areas. There is basically no job opportunities in Enugu, except for govt jobs.

^^Also the citizens should be told to stop giving birth indiscriminately. We are also our own worst enemies. A man who can hardly eat 3 square meals a day has no business fathering even 3 children let alone 5.
A law should be passed, as a matter of urgency, that will make it a crime to father more children than u can cater for.
It is a crazy and an irresponsible African culture that makes a man father 6 children that he knows he cant provide for then send only his first male child to school or to learn a trade and after all that still expect that child to be responsible for the upbringing of the remaining 5 as well as his own nuclear family by the time he gets married. This leads to family crises later in life where the rest of the children will be blaming the first child for abandoning them in favour of his own family because they feel they are entitled to his success.
The fault lies with the government and ourselves.

Shining of kongo should not affect family planning na. Maybe the governent should make access to medical prophylactics readily available.

get this straight, HOLD THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RESPONSIBLE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT. what really do you want the state government to do? Over bloat its recurrent expenditure? It's not like any other state is better off, the federal government should reduce unemployment.

I hope the 5000 people shortlisted for the 10 openings are not required to pay N1,000 application fee each, which would result to N5million in the coffers of the usual suspects.

How can any sane person shorlist 5000 people for 10 openings? barawo banza.

I expected you to be far more intelligent than that. You have just displayed shameful level of IGNORANCE.

Governors can play big big roles in creating jobs in their states. When the FG ministries, department and agencies go on job creation drive or enact job creation policies, they dont usually dictate to the investors which particular state to invest. The various state govts have to market their states, promote their states, partner with willing investors where necessarily, provide state-level investor friendly environments, etc. Nothing stops a governor from doing the state version of YOUWIN or replicate other federal-level job creation interventions in their state. What about creating several state govt owned or PPP skills acquisition centres? Even in terms of keying into federal govt job creation policies, providing cheap loans for willing entrepreneurs, empowering the youths to go into agriculture, promoting sports (there is huge job creation opportunities in sports), promoting tourism, promoting locally (Made in Enugu) made goods, etc. In fact, there is so much states can do to complement what is done at the federal level.

But is it the governor's duty to create jobs?

Insofar as the state govt sets up the enabling environment for businesses to thrive, which they're doing to a large degree through infrastructure provision, granting various incentives to intending investors including help with land acquisition etc... then the onus falls on private business to invest in the region and generate employment.

I served in Enugu and I think they have somethin akin to that. They do have ESWAMA which employs a lot of youths. But more can be done. It is time to start inviting investors big time. And nothing stops the government from creating govt-owned profit driven institutions either. I may be wrong though.

Are you insinuating that Enugu State has been singled out as culprit in the acts of dictating to the investors which particular local government area to invest? I guess one of the problems in Nigeria is innocuous knack for illogicality.

In any enlightened society, governments are not meant to create jobs but create enabling conditions for private corporations to create jobs. In almighty USA, government jobs both on state and federal levels are anemically scarce. People shun at certain government-oriented projects because they are more or less welfare entities.

that is why I support and always call for true federalism in Nigeria because all these governors will never invest a kobo in any capital project that will create jobs for people since they know that every month end they go to abuja and share money and no one has the right to question their use of the monies

you are a joke, tell me one state with lower unemployment rate in Nigeria, what is the FG's policy on job creation, YOUWIN? What happened to the large deposit of coal sitting in enugu? Enugu should be an industrial city with 50% of the country's power plants sited there. How much does the state government get compare to the FG? What is the cbn doing about lending rate
The state can provide enabling environment like good road and Co. (that enugu is not lacking) on its little resources. If the FG will allow mine and export its coal, then we can hold the state responsible.

Absolute nonsense. Yes, we need constitutional amendment but we'r talking of things that can be done NOW even under the present arrangement. Nothing stops any of the state govts from doing any of the things highlighted in my initial post- YOUWIN was just an example but even if the state govt cannot do YOUWIN, what short term job creation interventions can they do to help ameliorate the situation? Aren't you one of those hailing Ngige when he claimed he'll create thousands of jobs during the recent election debates? Shouldn't politicians who promised to create jobs during campaigns be help accountable when elected? Are you insinuating the state govts should raise the hands in the air in complete surrender to rising unemployment in their respective states? As far as I'm concerned, state governors are supposed to be creative in solving problems in there states, as much as the law allows them to do. They were not elected to sign contracts for road construction alone- even primary one pupil can also sign contracts for road construction.

from which money is the government going to fund you win? Do you have an idea what the state budget is like? Is it the economy in Enugu isolated from the rest of Nigeria?
Fact here is the federal government is in charge the economy of the country and that reflects on every state, does enugu control its own inflation? or interest rates.
In the true sense of its a shame that you are shouting YOUWIN, and initiative that is supposed to employ 80,000 people in 5yrs shocked 80,000 from a population of over 150mil. This is not even worthy of celebration for a local government.
SO LONG AS THE FG IS IN CHARGE OF THE ECONOMY AND TAKES THE LARGER CHUNK OF THE COUNTRY'S RESOURCES, I WILL SPARE THE STATE unemployment problems.

its still unemployment, it's because of the magnitude of shortfall that is why people go for jobs below their skill and level. Reason why bsc holders apply for teaching or truck drivers.

Government merely creates enabling environment for job creation. On the hand government stimulates job growth using infrastructure projects, labor stimulating laws. But the bulk depends on individual creativity.
The lack of legal authority states have over some stimulatory activities using available resources hampers job creation in states like Enugu that have large population of educated young people.

Its neither State nor federal government but the mind set of the people. The reason why Abia and Anambra has the lowest unemployment level is because they believe in self employment. In Imo State, people seem to belittle self-employed people, traders and artisans which is very bad. We can only reduce unemployment by employing ourselves and not waiting for government.

I believe that Enugu government can still do more ( I do recognize finance is mearger ). One of such is the establishment of what I will call agric cities that will deal with tree products..orange. Udala. Ube. Pawpaw etc .animals such as cows and goats. cities meaning infrastructure and incentivice with actionable loans and facilitate with the sale and advert of the products from the cities. Its long term but with the right policies it create employment and wealth for the youths.

With agric cities come schools.hospitals.retail.research in areas of biotech.environment. With middle-class rising all over the world there's not enough food to go round.

Another area the state can help depending on finances is rail transport. Capital intensive but an unemployment mop. Done right with Enugu as a transit center to middle belt regions is a great incentive for investors to come to the state.

Lastly the state has to show the world what it has
No one sees your beauty if you hide in a windowless dark room.

I agree with the last parts of your post, but you people should stop all these individual creativity nonsense, we are talking industries here with capacity for thousands of jobs, where is the fund or loan for creativity? At what interest rates? How many companies in Nigeria can boast of 10,000 staff? You think opening a shop and paying sales girls 10,000 naira a month is employment?
How many jobs in Nigeria offer retirement benefits or home loans and Co. Abeg come off it.
