Hezbollah is more than a terror group...it is also a political party, and a community service organisation in its native Lebanon.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria's Federal High Court has sentenced a Nigerian-Lebanese accused of belonging to Hezbollah to two terms of life imprisonment for an arms cache hidden in a concrete bunker under a home in the country's troubled north.

Talal Ahmad Roda was found guilty Friday of conspiracy to unlawfully import and store prohibited firearms.

Judge Adeniyi Ademola Adetokunbo freed two other Nigerian-Lebanese, Mustapha Fawaz and Abdallah Thahini, for lack of evidence.

The three had been accused of plotting attacks against Western and Israeli targets for the Lebanese Shiite Muslim Hezbollah militia.

The judge said there was no evidence they received terrorist training and noted it is not illegal to belong to Hezbollah in Nigeria.

They were arrested in May after security agents discovered the cache including rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles.

3 Suspected Hizbullah Members Cleared of Nigeria Terror Charges

Three Lebanese nationals suspected of being Hizbullah members were cleared of terrorism charges in Nigeria on Friday but one of the accused was convicted of a weapons offence and jailed for life.

Mustapha Fawaz, Abdallah Thahini and Talal Ahmad Roda were arrested in May after the discovery of an arms cache in a residence in the northern Nigerian city of Kano.

They were accused of plotting attacks against Western and Israeli targets in Nigeria but denied the accusations.

Federal High Court Judge Adeniyi Adetokunbo Ademola said Hizbullah "is not an international terrorist organization in Nigeria" and therefore membership is not criminal.

He said there was "no evidence" that the group was planning an attack or had received "terrorism training" as the prosecution alleged.

All three men were also acquitted of money laundering charges.

But Roda was found guilty of conspiracy to import weapons into the country and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Defense lawyer for all three men Ahmed Raji told reporters after the hearing: "We are happy and slightly not comfortable with respect to the third accused (Roda).

"The most important thing is that the grave aspect of the charges, that is terrorism, was knocked out. We are happy about that."

Raji said he would consult with Roda about a possible appeal against his conviction and sentence and added: "Speaking for myself, I think an appeal is worthwhile."

The trial featured several unexpected twists, including a testimony from Roda that an extremist cell in Nigeria had plotted to assassinate the Saudi ambassador.

In August, Fawaz testified that he had been harshly interrogated by Israeli security agents after his arrest.

He said the grilling was carried out by "six Israeli Mossad agents and one masked white man" who were primarily concerned with his contacts in Lebanon and demanded details of where weapons were stored in his home country.

Thahini testified that he collapsed after being denied sleep for five days in a similar interrogation by purported Israeli agents.

Israel raised concerns over alleged efforts by Hizbullah members to plan attacks in west Africa after the group was arrested.

Fawaz owns a popular amusement park in the capital Abuja called Wonderland, which the court ordered should be re-opened after the ruling.

He and Thahini were immediately released while Roda was escorted away in handcuffs, an Agence France Presse reporter in the court said.

Nigerian intelligence agents escorted journalists to a property in Kano on May 30 and showed them a bunker where a massive haul of weapons had been stored.

The spy chief in Kano, Bassey Etang, described the room as a "Hizbullah armory" -- a statement that raised eyebrows among some analysts.

He said investigations were needed to uncover potential links between the "Hizbullah cell" and Boko Haram, the extremist Islamist group that has killed thousands in northern Nigeria since 2009.

There had previously never been any discussion of a connection between the party and the Nigerian insurgents and experts voiced strong doubts that such ties existed.

The court verdict is a fresh blow to Nigeria's main intelligence branch, the Department of State Services, which in September claimed that Boko Haram attacked troops outside a government building in Abuja.

Subsequent evidence, however, suggested the clash involved security officers and a group of squatters.

Once again, the Federal Government has demonstrated itself to be shamelessly prejudiced against Muslims of all nationalities. If the defendant here is a non-Muslim or is from a non-Muslim country, he would have only been charged with a weapons charge if any charges at all. But since he's a Muslim, he's given the life-sentence.

May God be watch over this fellow Muslim. May God deal justly with those who are responsible in ruining his life and livelihood.

the charge against one of the three is weapons related, and not on terrorism.it is Nigerian newspapers that have poor skills in journalism or are parroting Israeli reports and claims on this case.both the report of premium times newspaper and the title of this thread are misleading.

however the other two suspects that have been freed deserve compensation.both amigo and wonderland have been shut out of business since May this year.and now they have been freed by the court.this case was full of suspicions from the start, especially when it was reported that it had been Israeli mossad agents that interrogated the suspects-more like two enemies using our turf to settle their scores.

first it was claimed they are Hezbollah members.now the court says it is not illegal or criminal to be a member of Hezbollah in Nigeria-being that Hezbollah is a political party (that represents a large segment of Lebanon's population in parliament and the cabinet) and a welfare organization in Lebanon which is a friendly country to Nigeria.hezbollah being at odds with Israel doesn't dictate upon our foreign policy as a sovereign nation that we too must shun it and condemn it to hell.it is not done like that.we as a sovereign nation and a foreign policy that takes into consideration Nigeria's interests must maintain neutrality when two other parties we have ties with are at disagreement.we can even play a mediator role instead of taking side with one against the other.of course we were told also that the suspects had weapons.now we see that two are not guilty and only one could have been into illegal arms possession.

This is not about corrupt judicial system but it is clean justice has been well served. Only barbarians would demand for death penalty in this case. Life in prison is a good enough as the best choice among the two, life imprisonment and death. I think there is still hope on the Nigerian judicial system.

Thank you.

Re: Abuja Court Sentences Lebanese To Life Imprisonment For Terrorism by phiphis: 3:22pm On Nov 30, 2013
The court found Tahal Roda, guilty of
terrorism charges.
A Federal High Court in Abuja has
sentenced a Lebanese, Tahal Roda, to life
imprisonment on terrorism charges.
Mr. Roda was charged to court by the
Department of State Security Services, SSS.
The court, however, freed two other
Lebanese, Mustapha Fawaz and Abdullah
Thani, of the charges.
Mr. Fawaz is a co-owner of one of Abuja’s
largest supermarkets, Amigo Supermarket,
and Wonderland Amusement Park, also in
Abuja
Both buildings have been sealed since the
suspects were arrested by the military and
the SSS.
The Court had on October 21 failed to
deliver judgment in the suit, with Justice
Adeniyi Ademola reserving judgement on
the matter after the parties in the case
separately adopted their written addresses.
The Federal Government had dragged the
accused, Mustapha Fawaz, Abdallah Thahani
and Talal Ahmed Rodo, to court over
terrorist activities bordering on illegal
importation of firearms.
The Nigerian military had uncovered heavy
weaponry in a building in Kano allegedly
owned by the Lebanese.
Nigerian authorities subsequently sealed off
two buildings in Abuja, Amigo Supermarket
and Wonderland Amusement Park, also co-
owned by Mr. Fawaz.
The Lebanese were also accused of being
members of Hezbollah, the Lebanon based
group considered a terrorist organisation
by the U.S.
During the trial, Simon Egede, who is the
prosecution counsel, maintained that the
accused persons were guilty of the charges,
especially based on the evidence given by
the witness.
Mr. Egede said that Hezbollah was a
terrorist group and should be treated as
such. He explained that any organization
that was involved in bombing and
destruction was a terrorist organization and
therefore prayed the court to convict the
accused.
Robert Clarke, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria,
SAN, who is the defence counsel, however,
opposed the submission of the prosecution
counsel, saying Hezbollah had not been
pronounced a terrorist organization by the
Nigerian Government.
He said Hezbollah w
