Nairalanders smiley
As critical as the topic is, It here believe there is a big neglect in Nigeria in terms of the safety benefits and quality of wheel alignments performed in various workshops.
The commercial buses are culprits in this regard and wonder why the road safety officials fail to observe the side ward movement of these vehicles. Some even have larger tires mixed amongst others. Well this is a topic for another day.

Now for the private car owners one like myself , I am bothered by the quality of wheel alignment performed by shops. In the past 3wks I have aligned my wheels 3 times. Both computerised and manual (telescopic mirror like device).

Either the steering is crooked, or the vehicle wonders to the left or bright.
As you all know the cost of wheel alignment in Lagos falls within the range of 1500 to 5000k,

My friends have you ever had a perfect alignment, straight wheels on straight road?
steering wheel positioned, etc .
If yes, can you advise the shop, and where we can benefit

Over the years, I have observed that most of the technicians handling the electronic wheel alignment & balancing (computerised balancing and alignment) are either poorly trained or unable to effectively use those equipment.

I have tried most workshops here in Abuja with just about the same result of tilted steering & vibration at a certain speed.

However, I discovered a man that does his manually. It's been 4 years since I use him and never had a reason to replace tires due to uneven wear. For those in Abuja, the man's workshop is located close to living faith church, Durumi.

I happened to do my alignment 3 times in a month until i did mine at Mobil filling station @ Jikowi Abuja. he did a good job, didnt have to visit their shop again

Changed my tie rods and Bought new tyres recently cos of the wear caused by the previous alignment. went to the guy again, and he still did a good job.

If the Ball joints are faulty, the car would continue to veer either to the left or right, regardless of alignment done...so I heard.
I stand to be corrected!

when people buy all manners of accident cars with frame damage which were fixed cheaply by road side panel beaters, what do you expect?

I was frequently visiting workshops and stooping-by at gas stations for alignment until a technician advised 'Wheel balancing'. That stopped the problem and I'm glad I did. I think for each alignment session, the wheels should be correspondingly balanced undecided...I stand to be corrected O!

If you have poor suspension you can never have a good alignment. Always check your suspension before alignment. If you meet a good alignment specialist he should be able to tell u the truth instead of making you pay for unnecessary alignment.

I remembered that I had the same issue as op narrated but there are facts we should not shy away from as some people have mentioned.

I would like to add this too, when you buy different brand of tyres fixed on your car you may likely have this problem as one tyre would most likely wear off before the other and you can't get a per feet alignment and balancing.

My experience, I bought two useless brands of new tyres and fixed the two in the front and in less than two years one slightly wear out that the other. Unknowingly I keep going from one filling station to the other to do alingnment and balancing to no avail until one nice attendant advice me to stop wasting my time that I should get a new brand of new tyres.

My lesson ensure you get a new same Brand of tyres and fixed on all your 4 wheels and secondly know that if you have your brake pad or whatsoever done on your tyres it will not give you the accurate alignment you need.

Most people dont know this fact.

Alignment hardly goes off by itself, it is the suspension parts that wear off. If alignment goes off, consult a mechanic first then the alignment booth thereafter.

Alignment is adjusted on the joint between the steering tie rod ends (inner and outer). Wearing of these 2 parts are the main cause of an off alignment. Others that contribute in a smaller measure is the lower and upper arm ball joints. One condition that causes alignment to seem off but its not actually the case is an unevenly worn or sized tires.

One thing i do is that i dont buy one directional tires. This is because when i have an unevenly worn tire, i can change the tire direction to correct but with the one directional tire, it is not adviseable to change it especially in the rainy season.

I have also noticed that some brands of tires are easily balanced while others will always cause problems. Of course most tires we use in Naija are Chinese tires and have low quality.

Lastly, when i do the road side telescopic alignment, i never allow them to remove my steering wheel like most will do in order to reset it. They must do it from down there. The guy i use usually as a first step checks the alignment to see it is off. If yes, he drives back and comes front in a straight line to see which side of the wheel needs to be adjusted to have the steering back straight. He adjusts the affected side(s) which comes from experience. He then drives on a less busy highway, if steering is off, he parks by the road adjust both sides equally to adjust steering. By the time he returns he checks the alignment finally. The process is tedious but cheap at between N300-500. Computer based is the best since all 4 wheels are squared plus the steering and usually about 2k in Abj while laser cost the same but not as reliable since steering could still be off during driving.

technically speaking from experience, the wheel balancing and alignment should be done by an expert that knows more and have the experience of dealing with such, like checking the conditions of the suspension before any alignment or balancing, with due course the manual will be an exit of this generation with time, I would preferred the computerized wheel balancing and alignment, just check out this station; MALOK filling station, beach road at ebutte, ikorodu, they have one of the best.expert handling this......

Hello All,

This thread seem old but nevertheless.

I have had my share of bad alignment and I know how frustrating it can be.
For those in Lagos, I will recommend you use the TOTAL Service centers in most TOTAL fuel stations.

They are always well equipped (with the whole laser thingy for the alignment. tyre repairs and replacements. original parts. etc) and I have sampled at least 5 different depots. (3 on the mainland, 2 around lekki).

Just yesterday i went to Oando (At the 4th roundabout) to do alignment only for me to leave with a worst condition. Then i decided no to go back there and made my way same day to TOTAL (the one beside The palms) and i was skeptical about the young lad that i met because his boss wasnt around and I was surprised he did it in less than 4 attempted. (Meaning he adjusted, drove it, repeated this 3times) and then handed over my keys to me.

I told him i was gonna come back if i am not satisfied and he just smiled and said I will come back for sure but not for alignment issues.

So once again the guys at the TOTAL station saved the day.

I will encourage you to try them out and please do share your experience with us.

I still don't like the laser.

The best for me is the computerized alignment. It sets and four tires plus steering perfectly at a single operation. You cannot do it and find a fault except if your suspension is bad.
