Less than 24 hours after the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Mr Ita Enang, said there was no formal defection notice from members before the leadership, Senate President David Mark has formally intervened in the crisis rocking the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Upper Legislative Chamber.

it is feared that there would be a gale of defections from the PDP to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) when the Senate resumes plenary on January 14. It is, however, unclear whether the senators would all move en-masse same day or do it in turns as demanded by the Senate Standing Rules (2011, as amended).
To stem the impending tsunami, the Senate President announced yesterday that he would liaise with party elders to address grievances of party members with the hope that it would stop the proposed defection of PDP senators.

In a statement issued yesterday by his Media Adviser, Kola Ologbondiyan, the Senate President assured that he is prepared to “do the needful,” to stem the crisis in the party.

Also, speaking ahead of next week’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party, Senator Mark promised that PDP leaders will unite to save the party from its current crisis.
“We will arrest the current situation and save our party from further disintegration. some Nigerians are talking about tsunami in the PDP because of the defection by some members of our party, holding elective and non-elective positions.

“But as leaders, we will not sit by and continue to allow this drift. We shall do the needful and ensure that we save our great party, the Senate President said.”

Admitting that the development is a challenge, Senator Mark said “genuine efforts would be made to reconcile our party men and women and bring peace and unity in the party.”

He was optimistic that the Senate remains a united family, noting that what affects the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerians would continue to be the interest of the Upper House.
