I'm in a federal university here in nigeria -i wont say the name of the university-and in my first year i paid the sum of 15,000. 'developmental' dues,  I know i still pay every year but i don't know the exact amount,  Recently,our VC provided free wlan access on campus,great right?, well guess what? Undergraduates are NOT ALLOWED to browse with their laptops, every time i see that notice,I'm stupefied, who needs free internet access more?the lecturers?or the students? I must state here that most of the books in our library are outdated and trying to research there wont bring up any 'NEWS' and there are only 4 cybercafes on campus (2 have only about 5 working systems).They use a hotspot to protect (mikrotik) it,and only lecturers are given logins and passwords,  The lecturers (the younger ones) sometimes sell their login at inflated prices to students, i think it is really unfair.

@poster.Na wa for that your school o.Using wlan or wireless is laptop dependent.If your laptop has a functional wireless,on it just click on the the computer icon opposite the battery icon and you will see the name of the wireless you want to connect,just go ahead and click on connect.Note if your school has a password in order to connect,then you must first of all get that password.School like university of Jos which i do go to their library to browse,their broad band is unsecure.And the stuff is very very fast.

Most univerisites and colleges have assigned to all enrolled undergraduate students getting their own username/password with its own private URL address for them to access university site with login system on their laptops/computers. It comes with technology agreement for students to sign to protect their networking system student must not break the rules.

So I am not sure about Nigeria universities/colleges with technology department since I am not in Nigeria.

If you have your laptop with wireless/bluetooth/WIFI capability, and you are official enrolled undergraduate student at your school, then you should obtain your own username and password that is assigned by your school technology department or your lecturer allowing you accessing their (university/college) site with login system.

@ Mustay, I think what the poster implies is that undergraduate students are not authorized to log in to the Wireless Network. This is not a difficult task to accomplish since all they have to do is include an authentication mechanism in the network that will only permit the desired catergory of individuals i.e pg students or professors to log in to the network.

trust me, students will do much more p0rn than academic work with them WLANs.

your CV doesn't deny you from using the web for the x purposes . As long as students can maximize the use of the net to their advantage (education wise), it's none of my bizwax if they setup porn sites.

My school (_{Not in Naija)} had WLAN on campus but they had a restriction on downloading, and porn. It was free for all students, your access was your student I.D number.

But trust Naija boys, we found a way around the nonsense, obtained an adminstrators pass, and we were downloading movies and porn like mad.

Infact, selling those porn and movie were part of my sustanance on campus.

I agree with dual core. Students will always be students, even in the absence of internet connections, they watch porn on DVDs and CDs, so giving them unrestricted internet access will only increase their source of pornographic content. A way around it is for the school to put in appropriate firewalls to block pornographic websites so the students can still use their accounts for academic purposes.
