Key PDP Caucus Holds Emergency Meeting Amid Controversy as FCTA Closes Wadata Plaza SecretariatIn a dramatic turn of events, a high-level gathering of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently underway behind closed doors at the Bauchi State Government Lodge in Abuja. The meeting, which was originally slated for 7 p.m., was shifted to an earlier time following the recent sealing of the party's national headquarters. Late Monday, officials from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) sealed the PDP National Secretariat located at Wadata Plaza over unpaid ground rent and tenancy fees. This move came just hours before the scheduled party Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting, which was subsequently affected. Sources disclose that FCTA authorities arrived at the premises, instructing security personnel to consult with the relevant officials, effectively halting ongoing activities at the site. The development has alarmed many within the party, especially as discussions about the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting—set for Tuesday, May 27—dominate the caucus conversations. The current caucus session features top PDP leaders, including sitting governors, senators, members of the BOT, and former national leaders. Insiders speaking with Channels TV reveal that the sealed secretariat and the NEC meeting are major points of concern, with party loyalists eager to understand the implications of these recent developments on the party’s future. As tensions rise, all eyes remain on the ongoing caucus discussion, which is expected to shape PDP's strategy moving forward amid these unforeseen challenges. https://mcebiscoo.com/shocking-secret-meeting-pdp-caucus-assembles-in-hidden-session-as-fcta-closes-party-secretariat/

Certain habits, even those we consider routine, can gradually reduce our quality of life—some can even lead to blindness. This article highlights five such habits to help you understand their potential risks to your vision 1. Smoking: Smoking is widely known to be harmful, but its impact on eye health is often overlooked. Smoking releases toxic substances that can damage your eyes. If these substances come into contact with your eyes, they increase your risk of severe eye conditions that may ultimately cause blindness. 2. Sunlight Exposure: The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can be damaging to both the skin and the eyes. Prolonged exposure without proper protection, such as sunglasses, can weaken the lenses of your eyes, increasing the likelihood of cataracts and other vision problems. In extreme cases, direct exposure to intense sunlight can lead to partial or even complete blindness. Shielding your eyes from direct sun exposure is crucial in protecting your eyesight. 3. Menopause and Early Menopause: While not exactly a habit, menopause—especially early menopause—can increase the risk of eye issues in middle-aged women. Research shows that women who enter menopause between 40 and 45 are at higher risk of developing cataracts, which, if left untreated, may lead to blindness. Hormonal changes during menopause affect eye health, so regular check-ups with an eye specialist can help manage potential risks. 4. Wearing Incorrect Eyeglasses: Many people wear glasses purely as a fashion statement without consulting an eye specialist. Wearing incorrect glasses can strain your eyes over time, potentially causing vision deterioration. If you’re unsure whether you need corrective lenses, consult an optometrist who can provide a proper prescription, protecting your vision in the>>>>https://sharpnews.ng/these-everyday-habits-can-blind-you-forever/

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has dismissed claims that he is seeking an automatic ticket or special treatment from the party ahead of the 2027 election. Obi, speaking through his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, responded to comments by LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, who denied that the party had plans to field Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and other 2023 candidates in the next poll. This clarification follows a statement by factional LP spokesperson Abayomi Arabambi, who had declared that Obi would be the party’s flagbearer to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. However, Ifoh dismissed the claim, stating that such decisions could only come from the Julius Abure-led faction and not from external voices. Addressing concerns about LP’s “no automatic ticket” stance, Umar reaffirmed that Obi was unbothered by party politics, stating: “Our principal, Peter Obi, remains committed to democracy and the well-being of Nigerians. He has never sought a free ticket or special treatment but instead advocates for a level playing field where all candidates can compete fairly.” He urged supporters to>>https://9jagist.ng/im-not-desperate-for-labour-partys-2027-presidential-ticket/

EXACTLY 70 years separate the July 26, 1953 suicidal attack on Moncada Barracks by Cuban youths who wanted to remove the military from power, and this Wednesday’s coup in Niger Republic which removed elected President Mohamed Bazoum and restored military rule. The coup plotters, styling themselves as the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Country, said in a speech by Air Force Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane that their treasonable move “is as a result of the continuing degradation of the security situation, the bad economic and social governance. Indeed, Niger, like many other African countries, is a paradox. It is one of the poorest countries in the world with 41 per cent of its 20 million people living on less than a dollar. It depends a lot on aid. Nigeria under former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022 provided it with N1.4 billion worth of vehicles to run government and also took loans to build railway from Nigeria into Maradi in Niger Republic. Yet, it is rich in minerals such as oil, silver, salt gold, gypsum, coal, tin, iron ore, phosphates and uranium. Indeed, it has the fifth largest uranium deposits in the world. Its primary problem, like that of many African countries is that its wealth is controlled by foreign companies and countries. Although bodies like the United Nations, the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States, and countries such as Nigeria, Benin, the United States of America and France have condemned the coup, the plotters are consolidating. In any case, who knows the backers of the coup? In the case of Cuba, six years after their first attempt, the youths led by colourful historical figures like Fidel Castro, Camilo Cienfuegos, Haydee Santamaria and Ernesto Che Guevera not only removed the military from power, but also disbanded it. In its place, flowered a new military loyal to the Cuban people. Since then, nobody has dared to organise a military coup in that country. In contrast, within two decades of saying farewell to coups in Africa, they have simply multiplied. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi who styles himself a Field Marshall, executed a brutal coup on July 3, 2013, murdered scores of Egyptians, allowed elected President Mohammed Morsi to die in prison due to lack of medical care and turned the country into a huge prison where the rule of law is not respected. Tragically, Sisi who also became Chairman of the African Union, is the toast of so-called advanced countries. In Sudan, the military led by General Fattah al-Burhan in April 2019, imposed itself on a popular uprising. It then aligned itself with the rogue elements of the murderous Sudanese Arab supporter of APC militia, now renamed the Rapid Support Forces, to soak the country in the blood of its patriots. On April 15, 2023 the Sudanese military and the supporter of APC turned their weapons on each other, drenching the entire country in blood. Within three months of this senseless conflict, the Sudanese coup plotters have killed over 2,000, displaced 2.2 million people from their homes, forced about 550,000 into exile and with some 25 million people in desperate need of basic needs like food. There have also been coups in Mali and Burkina Faso while there have been strenuous efforts not to classify the April 20, 2021 coup in Chad by General Mahamat Deby, as a coup. There is also the Ivorien President Alassane Ouattara imposing himself in October 2020 on the country through an unconstitutional third term and declaring himself re-elected with 95.31 per cent of the votes. What is this if not a coup? Coups succeed in Africa mainly because the people are alienated from the state and their leaders who are guarded by Praetorian guards. So all that is required, is for these guards to conspire, arrest the President, and a coup is on. That was what happened to Guinean President Alpha Conde in 2020 after he imposed himself for a third term. That is what happened this week to President Bazoum whose presidential guards put him under arrest. In all these, the populace who are continuously pushed into extreme poverty by the programmes and policies of the government in power, hardly see the need to sacrifice their lives in defence of such governments. This is in contrast with the situation in Cuba since 1959 where anybody that dares to organise a coup, knows it has the populace to contend with as there would be massive resistance in the streets. I had concluded that a military coup is virtually impossible in Cuba when I visited the island as a young journalist in 1986. The first morning I went out in the streets, I came across columns of people in army uniform cleaning the gutters and emptying drains. I asked my Cuban friend who these people were and he confirmed they were serving soldiers. Later, I came across building sites and the builders were soldiers. I asked my friend why soldiers were so deployed, and he answered that since the country was not at war, what else would the soldiers be doing? How will they earn their pay? I reflected that back home in Nigeria, the soldiers simply report at their offices, do some parade and go home. In the evenings when I went out, the Cuban government had bands in the streets with free beer and the people dancing. There were soldiers drenched in sweat drinking and dancing with no difference whatsoever from the rest of the populace, who back in Nigeria, are called ‘bloody civilians’. I discovered that military service for Cubans from age 18 was routine, especially after high school or tertiary training. Even now, under its National Defence Act No. 75, Cubans routinely go for two-three year military training. So in a country where virtually every adult you meet has military training, which soldiers would be crazy enough to want to carry out a coup? This is beside the fact that unlike nearly all the armies in Africa, the Cuban army is pro-people and not neo-colonial. There is also the fact that the loyalty of the Cuban military to the elected government of the country, can be taken for granted. This Wednesday evening, the Cuban Charge D’ Affairs, Pavel Bauza on behalf of new Ambassador Miriam Morales Palmero, filled in guests on the effects of the July 26 uprising and how Cubans despite over six decades of US sanctions and blockade, have built a country that cares for all its citizens. A country that provides one of the best healthcare systems in the world for all its citizens; in which the right to work and education are guaranteed and literacy is almost 100 per cent. As he spoke, I reflected that the antidote against coups, is the people. https://mcebiscoo.com/breaking-the-coup-in-niger-and-the-moncada-barracks-attack/

No matter how much you might enjoy a midnight snack, eating late at night is unhealthy. This is something we have long thought about, and it has now been proven. In a recent study, researchers from Harvard Medical School at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, discovered that eating late at night increases hunger, decreases calorie burning, and has the potential to alter the metabolism of adults who are overweight or obese, leading to an increase in body fat. In the US, 42% of adults are thought to be obese, putting them at risk for developing chronic illnesses including diabetes, cancer, and other conditions. The World Health Organization reports that the issue is also getting worse in Europe, where 59% of adults and 8% of children under the age of five are overweight or obese. The WHO found that obesity causes 1.2 million deaths worldwide each year, including 200,000 cancer cases, in a report released in May of this year. An estimated 650 million persons worldwide are obese. How is eating late associated with a higher risk of obesity? Even while many diets advice against eating after 6 or 7 o’clock in the evening, their effects have not yet been proven. In general, we were aware that a midnight snack was unwise, but we were unsure of the reason why. We now have a far clearer understanding of how late snacking affects our appetite, our energy expenditure, and our fatty tissue due to the Boston scientists. Scientists requested each of the 16 patients, who were regarded to be overweight or obese, to adhere to one of two protocols: one in which they could only eat on the specified time, and the other in which they could have the identical meals, but four hours later. In the 24 hours after their late-night eating, patients displayed reduced levels of leptin, the hormone that controls our appetite by signaling when we are full. It turns out that those four hours of delay could make a significant difference. They also burnt calories more slowly, and it suggested that their body fat was more susceptible to increase. The study’s findings were published in the journal Cell Metabolism. These results were obtained in a method that is not for the faint of heart: in addition to providing the researchers with information about their level of appetite, the patients gave them small blood samples throughout the day, had their body temperatures and energy expenditure monitored, and some even had adipose tissue biopsies done. A midnight snack can be extremely gratifying and indulgent, and some of.....https://naijalee.com/eating-late-makes-you-hungrier-study-finds/

A video showing the moment Prophet Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere’s church was demolished has surfaced online. Recall that the demolition took place yesterday in Anambra state. In the new video, a caterpillar truck could be seen digging in on the house before bringing it down. An earlier video had showed the the man of God being assaulted during the demolition. The Anambra State government demolished the Mountain of Holy Ghost Intervention and Deliverance Ministry in Onitsha and even assaulted the man of God. It was gathered that in April 2022, Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB) marked the church for outright demolition over obstruction and blockage of free flow of water at the Nwangele-Bida drainage. This is in line with the Onitsha urban renewal plan spearheaded by Governor Charles Soludo. A viral video has now showed the moment the man of God was slapped and brutalised as he attempted to stop the team of taskforce from bringing down his church. The church, which is located at Bida Road Off Creek Road, Fegge-Onitsha, has been brought down. Governor Nasir El-Rufai warned against zoning of the Presidency between the North and South region of Nigeria in a prologue titled ‘Defeating a Determined Incumbent – The Nigerian Experience’, written in contributiion to a book by the Director-General of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Salihu Lukma. The Kaduna State Governor argued that the competence has to be taken up in place of zoning as Nigeria cannot afford towing same path again. He also described the present method of funding parties as “opaque” and also proposed a new method which will cut off godfathers, while revealing factors that contributed to electoral success of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 presidential election. He said, “Even with our success in the 2015 elections, there is room for improvement. Barriers to political equality, such as our seemingly entrenched though informal rule for zoning candidacies according to regions of origin, need to be de-emphasised and ultimately abandoned in favour of an emphasis on qualification, competence and character. “The financing of parties, candidates and campaigns remains opaque. “Many African countries are marked by savage inequalities, and a handful of individuals have the wherewithal to hold the process hostage. “We must work towards funding parties via capped and fully disclosed donations and annual dues payable by every registered party member.” Also campaigning for an improved judicial processes and promotion of the rule of law, El-Rufai listed some conditions neccesary for an opposition to defeat the incumbent as these; “A unified opposition preferably merged into a single and well-structured political party well ahead of the next election cycle, and with transparent processes and progressive policies. “A presidential candidate widely seen as credible and reformist to provide a sharp contrast to incumbents usually fattened by years of lazy, incompetent and corrupt rule. “Honest elections that guarantee that votes count, using a mixture of competent electoral commission leadership and, crucially, deploying technologies for voter verification that drastically reduces electoral fraud. “Credible elections are enemies of voter apathy. They enhance democratic legitimacy and citizen participation. “Continuous engagement of the international community, particularly in the leading stable democracies as well as in multilateral institutions, to supply a crucial external fillip to the electoral process.” President Buhari claimed that he and his party had the support of Nigerians in the foreword of the book. He also insisted that his administration reversed the downward slide the PDP pushed the nation into by squandering its resources. He said, “There is no doubt that we have the popular support of Nigerians. “I have seen this myself when I went around the 36 states and the FCT during the campaigns. “The turnout of people and messages of goodwill across the country were what no individual, party or government could organise or buy. “They were purely demonstrations of confidence in our administration and its political platform, the All Progressives Congress, the product of the merger. “The multitude that trooped out to see me and hear me were reassuring that Nigeria, despite its cultural diversities, is united on the imperative of change. “Our duty as leaders is to ensure that we keep this nation united, build a better future for the citizens and the coming generation. “I feel that without coming together, we would not have been able to achieve this feat and Nigeria will be the worse for it. “We remain the only hope of the country in terms of charting a politically stable and economically prosperous future for our people. “I will, therefore, encourage us to continue leading this country effectively, now that Nigerians have entrusted us with a mandate once again to chart the course for the future of our beloved nation.” However Alhaji Shuaibu Oyedokun, a member of Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party disagreed with El-Rufai on zoning. Though he admitted that competence should be given a better place than zoning, he added that zoning was established during the defunct National Party of Nigeria to ensure no part of the country was alienated. Oyedokun said, “If we could find a way of strictly implementing zoning in the true spirit of it, i will say i want it. But do we sincerely implement it? If you zone a position to a particular area, people from other areas are not supposed to come out to contest but that is not the case. “To me, the kind of country we have, being heterogeneous in nature, in term of religious and ethnicity, I think for now, we should adhere strictly to zoning. What he said is right under normal circumstances but as it is now, Nigeria cannot afford to jettison zoning now.” https://www.mcebiscoo.com/governor-el-rufai-wants-zoning-stopped-in-presidency/

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has disclosed its intention to commence the construction of affordable housing across the local governments in state capitals. The project tagged: ‘Affordable Nationwide Housing Project’ has already kick- started in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Katsina and Ibadan even as the pilot scheme would be replicated in other states upon completion of the first phase. Managing director of FHA, Prof. Mohammed Al-Amin, stated this in Abuja yesterday during an inspection of its Zuba housing project site by the minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola. He said that the agency has already profiled 46 sites for the project and would deploy resources to the new sites after the pilot scheme. Al-amin noted that the 764 housing units in Zuba project has gulped the sum of N3.7 billion and would be commissioned in August. The project which is almost 80 per cent completed is surrounded by the Zuba Model Market, FCT College of Education and Zuba Spare Parts Market. According to him, “That is why we chose this location in Zuba for these houses; it is not in Maitama, Asokoro or Jabi rather, we decided to come to the outskirt of FCT to build for some specific Nigerians who must have these houses.” The MD pointed out that the agency was building another mass housing project in Kwali and Bwari to enable low income earners who could not afford the luxury of owning homes in the central business district or hinterland acquire homes. On his part, Fashola commended the agency for not compromising on the quality and standard of building materials used at the site, saying that the houses would meet the generally global standard of public housing in terms of its fittings and finishing when completed. http://mcebiscoo.com/2019/04/10/fha-to-build-affordable-housing-across-local-govts/
